Hi there may be many reasons for the restart .sometimes it so happens that if ur pc is not properly cooled or ur motherboard get heated soon then system restarts. so first check if that happens . if it is then make some arrangement for cooling it properly.other thing if it a hardware problem i would suggest u call ur pc guy to fix it.(main thing that u will notice is that ur pc gets heated fast.) if everthing is allright with ur hardware then for the software there are two reasons. if ur os installed is not proper or ur pc has a virus. First thing i would like to ask u is wether u r using genuine copy of windows or whatever u r using.if not and if it is windows xp that u r using then i would recommend u to download all the patches for windows xp.u have to do it if u r using windows xp. but if u r using higher versions like windows 7 then there is no problem. installing patches removes half the problems including restarting of pc.if u dont know where to download it from then meassage me i'll give u the links. next if it is a virus: there are many antiviruses and if they are updated they are all good.but i would recommend nod32 or eset or quick heal. norton antivirus slows down the pc sometimes as far as i have seen. next thing i know u had done the scan but had u done the scan with the system in safe mode ?? always scan ur pc completely in safe mode if u suspect a threat powerful. tell me if u get through this much if u r interested i can help u out more in removing threats manually too. yes no antivirus, just us killing the virus :)

if nothing helps try formatting ur pc and resinstalling the os.but the only problem i hate is that after reinstalling os i have to always install antivirus and update it again. and as the start update file of every antivirus is too big 40 mb or something i hate it . i have slow net connection and so this thing always takes time .

Few days back, I had this problem but I was not able to work more than 3 or 4 minutes in my computer. It used to restart perfectly as we are doing..I tried in many ways to rectify that..NOt possible for me..Then finally, the serivce engineer found the problem was with the SMPS and the ON/OFF switch in my CPU..After changing them, my system is working well..As you are able to work for about an hours, there may not be any activity of virus and yours may be the hardware problem. Possibily, it will happen to the old systems only. You may check the SMPS and the ON/OFF switch before doing any other thing.

does your computer slows down before it shuts off. Is there a beep sound before it shut down?

It seems a hardware problem. most probably, the problem lies with your psu (power supply unit) did you upgrade anything? if you did, try removing that hardware from your pc and trying again. if that doesnt work, replace your power supply unit. i think that should help ut if doesnt then its quite a big question to answer to and you have to individually check each and every hardware in your pc for flaws.

May be there is some thing more extreme problem than virus. I had similar problem like yours in my PC. Every time I opened a game or media player it would restart. I also used lots of anti virus but they did not work. So I finally came up with the idea of formatting my computer by keeping necessary back up. And this time I did not used the same previous bootable disk, instead I bought new original DVD od windows XP. From then to now .. I am not experencing any kind of such problems of auto restarting. I suggest you to do so.. But I am not sure about it.so scan your computer with anti virus and a good spy ware. From my experience Avira is good antvirus.

If your pc restarts abruptly without properly shutting down then it may not be a problem with any virus or software. It might be a problem with the temperature of your PC. Try Keeping your computer in a cool place and then see if the problem persists. This is very common with most of the computer users. If you want a good antivirus software then try bit defender total Security 2010. Its the best availabe on the net.
