Frustrated by attempts to shop on line. Any ideas.

I expect shopping online is a quick and easy business for most of you but I got frustrated beyond belief in my attempts last night. Being unable to find a suitable warm, cosy 13.5 tog quilt to keep me warm in these cold nights locally, I went on line. I thought that IKEA in Athens would be a good place to start but soon realised that similiar products with good review are available at a fraction of the cost. Amazon came up as selling quilts and as Amazon used to deliver to Greece (except for second hand books) I plumped for a quilt from them, along with a few more small items which were much much cheaper there than in Greece. Six items altogether. I recived the message that 3 of the items could not be delivered to Greece, including the quilt, so I cancelled the whole order. I then found another couple of quilts elsewhere and after finding them then discovered they too wouldn't deliver to Greece. I finally found a quilt which could be delivered to Greece, but then gave up in disgust as the postal charges cost more than the item. So how can I work backwards and find if they will they deliver and postal costs, before I waste my time finding the quilt which I want? Anyone else having this kind of frustration?

I think it is very unfair to u that u can't get what u want w/out a hassle. I have nothing againist shopping online I just don't need to. I did use to buy antique glass if i found something pretty i liked or something i thought i could make money in the store with.

I must say I was very put out last night as there was no indication when I chose the quilt that Amazon wouldn't deliver here, but they would have delivered 3 of the smaller items, but I only chose those to go in with the same postage as the quilt. And its not against customs for them to deliver a quilt here. I don't know why it is always Greece which is singled out this way. I used to use this wonderful discount book on line place which even had free delivery, then one day it was we don't deliver there anymore. Currencies should make no difference at all and Amazon seem quite happy to deliver anywhere else in Europe.

Hi aunty, I only shop for what I need these days too, but it is impossible to geta warm quilt here in Greece for some reason. I use online when I know things like vitamins will cost me about a sixth of the price from the uk, even with postage on top, as some of the things here are so outrageously priced. It seems that customs are stopping more and more things from coming in from outside so that the prices can be held so high here, so more taxes within the country. I think it is wrong when we are part of Europe but not in this respect.

Hi thea If Im telling you right I think that you can go onto ebay and put in your area and it will show the shipping price and then you can shop for the quilt and see all the cost up front. I think that they ship to you. I haven't had any shipping problems but I have had problems with the cost before. It does get to be a big hassle sometimes. Take a deep breath and try again today..LOL..Keep smiling my friend.

Hi rosepedal - I thought that ebay was all used stuff though and I don't want a used quilt. If they aren't I've a friend who has more patience with ebay than I do and has got stuff before for me from on there so worth considering if they are new.

I can't actually shop on ebay myself as I forgot my log on and had to reregister and then it said my card was already in use so I haven't been able to use it since as I only use one card. I might take a look though and then do the usual of getting my friend to get it.

Oh yes thea You can select the new on the left side when you search. I have ordered several things from them all being new. I think it would be well worth your time my dear. Let me know how that works out for you.

I am even more frustrated, as Romania is ignored by e-commerce sites more than Greece, because of the lower degree of civilization around here. I had many unpleasant experiences with e-commerce. At one time I bought a very good book from a library here. The problem is that the action in the book doesn't finish - it goes on in another book, never translated or sold in Romania. I found that book on Amazon for 0.01 Pounds! Guess what! No delivery for Romania. I was lucky to find someone with a relative in Belgium that bought the book for me and sent it over... However, I am happy to see that many of the e-bay sellers send items to Romania. I found some nice fossils and decided to buy them. I payed via PayPal, and found out the package will never reach my home... That's because packages outside the European Union (Hong Kong in my case) arrive in the department's administrative center, a city about 30 km (and 4$) away. So, because I was away, my mother had to go pick up a 50 grams package worth 4$ and had to pay an extra 4$ for the transportation... The latest items I wanted to buy are geological tools (hammers, chisels, sample bags, etc.) of excellent quality. I found a website with very reasonable prices, that accept many types of payment, but the postage is huge. I wanted to buy something really cheap just to see if it gets here in good condition. The package was worth 0.10 Pounds, but the postage was... 12 Pounds! I'm still going to buy from them, but larger packages that cost less to receive... Have you tried searching for quilts on e-bay too? On the advanced search you can filter for the items that can be sent to your country and you can also set a price interval.

I think they are trying to avoid situations when they send stuff to such less civilized countries and the stuff gets lost or stolen in the mail (that seems to be happening around here), because that only creates trouble between the seller and the buyer that the e-commerce sites have to mediate. I'm stuck to buying geological tools from abroad because this kind of items are totally absent in Romania...

Perish the thought that I meant uncivilised in that sense Stvasile, unlesss a foreigner intercepted something the Greek mail system has proved to be totally honest. I finally ordered my duvet two weeks ago and am still waiting it's arrival, and if you read somewhere else that the postman may be trying it out first I was only jesting.

Hi stvasile, what do you mean by them not delivering because the lower degree of civilisation, you think they'd all be wanting to get in on these emerging markets, not turning the business away. The situation here has got much worse over the last few years and what I could once get hassle free is now ridiculous. I too have had problems with the Amazon second hand market which is fabulous for getting out of print books for a pittance but then the postage becomes too much as it has to be first send to someone in the Uk with postage, then out here. I even remember having 2 books sent to some friends in the US who were coming out on holiday and brought them with them. Are you stuck to buy the items you want such as the geological tools in Romania, or is it just that they are so much cheaper elsewhere? Maybe it doesn't apply in Romania but I've had the odd thing sent out to my son from someone in Hong Kong and have had to pay taxes at this end to receive them, so I even end up paying for gifts. I discovered tonight that Greece is not classed as in Europe but in the Euro zone 2, I imagine that you are stuck in Euro zone 3. Wait until they decide we're civilised to qualify for their business and by then someone from a Euro 3 zone will have set up a nice little business to out rival them. Hopefully.

I have no experience of shopping online Thea except from firms which are here in Itlay where delivery costs are reduced to a minimum and indeed if you order over a certain amount their reduce down to nil. Would it be easier if you to move and maybe to somewhere where the climate is much warmer too?

Hi mys, as you know my intention is to move house, and the first priority would be one which is easier to keep warm. But as I noticed you said somewhere else the change in seasons from 4 to 2 has been a bit of a suprise, it was never usually an issue until the new year at least. I do find that the climate is more of a cold damp one rather than a fresh cold, but that is probably because of being so near to the sea.

It's raining and cold here but a 'crisp' sort of cold and indoors the central heating is fine, almost too warm by evening. I turn the radiators off in the bedroom as I'm warm enough in bed without them. I dohope that when youmove you will find the perfect place for all seasons.

Here in the US, I purchased two pairs of pants from Amazon.com. In that case the pants themselves were about $26 and the shipping for both was only $6. It seems that shipping things in Europe is horribly expensive. We have more a of a free-market system here. Perhaps that's why it's cheaper to get things shipped from LA to New York, than Europe can over a few km. Just a guess though.

I'm sorry your having so much trouble buying something as simple as a quilt. I never thought about not being in the shipping area. I have bought stuff online and the only problem I have had is it takes me a lot of time. I want to look at everything available, read the reviews, and then I am worried that it might be a scam site. A friend of mine bought something online and she paid for it, but never received it and it was thru Pay Pal which she thought would be a scure site. Pay Pal looked into it for her and they said they would try to retreive her money. They said there are so many sites closing so often they couldn't make any promises I never knew different countries had shipping problems, I guess I never thought about it. I live in the US and sometimes we don't consider other peoples problems. If the sites deliver to other countries I don't think Greece would be that much different. Shipping some items and not all makes no sense at all.

Sorry Thea. I have no idea. As far as I know, everything is delivered to Australia. The only products I have ordered on line have been from Australian distributors, so I can't help. There is one suggestion, but it would be unthinkable to you - live elsewhere where there are no hassles.

Hi cloudwatcher, you are quite right, I'm not up for moving. It would be much easier if people just flat out refused to deliver here but when the policies vary so much it is maddening. There is no law against quilts being delivered to Greece but some refuse whilst others make a nonsense of it with their postage costs. I refuse to spend another winter freezing in 6 layers under a Greek quilt though.

I know that humour wasn't part of the topic here, but my first thought was; serves you right, you Greek God's & Goddesses, you've convinced the world how HOT you are,now you want our quilts! You have jaded my imagination! Now, on the serious side...a quilt, I must caution is probably something you want to shop personally for...or have SOME-ONE you trust, shop for...LIKE AUNTIE in TN! There is a reason, last year...I bought on-line, what I thought was such a wonderful deal...a "Down" quilt on E-bay! (Can't blame e-bay)! At great shipping costs,(greater than the quilt)...the quilt arrived...within two nights of usage, the down started to come thru the quilt cover...the down, was the worst form of down, ever....really more like chicken feathers, and the more you tossed, turned and itched from the feathers poking you....the more came thru! Because the ends of the feathers are sooooo sharp..there is NO material that will stop them from coming thru. The quilt is now..the DOG's Bed, he doesn't seem to mind the feathers poking him! The reason I suggest a good friend in the US or UK, is that most products are cheaper there....their "snail mail" is faster than ours! But, I will gladly take on the challenge...price out a decent quilt, and the shipping, the next time I go to town, and send you a report! The option, of course, is a poly filled quilt....but, truly am concerned about the off gasing of the poly....I recently read that even carpets that are synthetic, off-gas for the life the carpet is in your home! Yikes! Hope you weekend was great, thea! HUGZ & CHEERS!

Well I was shocked by your response Shirley and must say the only person wandering around thinking about Greek goddesses is fjaril and he says lovely things to everyone. It is actually unbelievable how cold Greek winters can be indoors, the houses are designed for hot weather and the Greek builders have never heard of insulation. Greek quilts are a total joke being nothing more than a bit of fluff between two sheets and I usually end up with more clothes on in bed than out, a true vision of elegance. The Greek has a wonderful imported real duvet and it made me realise that the expense on that would save on the constant refilling of the hot water bottles. However the Greek nights have struck earlier than usual already so time is of the essence so I will decline your kind offer to of looking on the mainland my dear SHirley, but if you do spot any online bargains you think are genuine do let me know. You almost put me off but I chose goose down and not polyester, the price being so cheap did make me a bit suspicious, but the brand names were good. I just need to find someone who won't charge more to deliver than the cost of the quilt without wasting so many hours looking for that elusive company.

This is partly the reason why I don't really shop online that much too. Sometimes, the things that we want, we don't get, hmmmm. Something like shipping problems and stuff like that. It can actually be done, choose items that can be shipped over to our destination, but the things that we really need, sometimes are not available. I don't know about alibaba.com, I have heard about the site, maybe it's quite similar. You can just check it out, who knows you might get the quilt you want. Or you can just go to eBay... it's another great site. Should be able to get the quilt you want. Otherwise, you just have to buy from a mattress shop..

Hi zed, if I could just go to a shop and get what I want then I would but they just don't have quality stuff in the quilt line out here. Me Greeks got an imported one and I was thinking why have I been suffering with the cold when I could just get one of these which they sell in the UK everywhere. He was put out as had 2 of the things and when he looked for the other to give to me discovered that once again a family member had helped themselves whilst staying. I did find one I wanted last night but the shipping was £30 so about $45 dollars, then shephedspy found postal costs at £15 so I'd decided to have one sent to my friend in the UK for her to post on, then rememberd she's off on 2 week hols from this weekend so won't be there to receive it. I might check out the aliaba place later, ebay is no use for me. Frustration.

I don't really shop online due to the frustrations with codes & shipping charges. I ordered some shetts from disney store & they could not find my order to put the ship code on it. I called several times and was assured it would be applied but it never was. I will not deal with those folks again. I hope you find a sensable solution to your delima. I'd say too bad you didn't know anyone elsewhere near an Ikea who could buy it & then see how much to ship to you.

Hi shepherd spy, well that answers one vital question from my useless searching effort, a 15 tog quilt can be posted at £15, which is half the cheapest price I've found online for having one sent out. I've found the quilt I want with free postage within the UK so I think I'll order that directly to my friend in the UK and ask her to post it out. I thought £30 was a hell of a lot for postage as a feather duvet doesn't weigh that much. I was going to make separate enquiries about postage rates but you've save me the bother now. Thanks so much, I'll email my friend then order the quilt.

It seems to me that like sites that pay you to do things, a shopping site should also list whether they ship internationally or not. I would first email the site if there's in fact an email and ask them if they deliver to Greece and what the costs would be. I wish I could be more of help but I can't think of any site that might deliver internationally except for possibly ebay but I myself don't trust the site. There is overstock.com but I am not sure that they would deliver to Greece either. Good Luck in finding that quilt you want.

I am sorry you are frustrated. Atleast at physical stores you can ask that a product be carried or shipped to said store for your purchasing capabilities. I am not sure if the same applies to online sites but it is worth a try. You can also band together frustrated shoppers in your country and have them also ask for specific things per a website and maybe said website would comply. After all, most places want business.

I only bought something online once. Thank God it got here and it didnt cost me so, but that was because I had a little bit of help from some relatives in the US. that once they got here in Panama they just gave me my purchase. It was a stamping nail art system. I decided to buy the second biggest one so I wouldnt be needing anything else for a while (its been a year, but Im needing more plates wich Ill ge at a later time. Well, I did a bit of research before making any purchases and believe it or not. It took me like 2 months before I got any results. I had no idea what to do because it would be my first time bying something online. I asked my mom to lend me her credit card so here is the list that I made. 1. Know what you want to buy. The item in question. 2. Do a wide search of the different sites or places that sale that particular item. 3. Before you do any purchases, if the page has it, check out the frequently asked questions section about the product and shipping methods and costs. 4. To read carefully, because some sites will state sometimes that its in US only or in certain regions and area that they will allow free shipping or shipping. 5. If you can, also watch or keep an eye for any promotional offers that they may be having on shipping or special discounts. The better for you. 6. If your local service is not trustworthy (like mine is) use the fast delivery shipping method. It will more costly, but at least you know for sure that your product will arrive safe and sound to you AND ONLY TO YOU, that way you avoid other people opening on your package or whatever. I dont know if this would help or not, but I hope it helps. Dont feel discoureged though.. keep it up! Have a good mylot day

I can't really give a great answer to this because I'm from Hong Kong. Most of these online shopping stores cater to North America and Europe. I think it's probably because they don't get much deliveries to Greece. Sometimes when they deliver stuff, they do it by the bulk so the overall cost of packages become cheaper. The cost of the whole shipment is divided. Maybe it's that? I think it's really unfair though.
