Admin for a Day: Discussions, Interest Categories, Leaderboards, & Notifications

December 28, 2009 4:52pm CST
Let’s chat about myLot discussions. Before we start though, I’ve listed the top 10 topics we’ve already covered so you don’t need to mention any of these again: 1. Many posts seem to get lost. You think you have posted, but you go back to the discussion and your post has vanished. Sometimes the opposite happens and it turns out you have posted twice. 2. The discussions load very slowly. The same is true with posting. 3. Many people don’t receive the notifications even though they are turned on. 4. You want the ability to edit your posts. 5. The notification emails omit any formatting so all of the line breaks are lost and the code is displayed as code rather than as formatting. You’d also like to see a link to view the discussion in the notification emails. 6. When you are responding to a comment, you’d like to be able to see the whole thread rather than just the original response. 7. Many users want to be able to copy and paste prior to reaching a User Rating of 500. 8. If you preview your discussion/response and go back to edit, the line breaks in your text are lost. The same is true if you add a picture after you enter your text. 9. Often when you upload a picture, the picture either doesn’t appear where it should or doesn’t appear at all. The same is true with your posts. 10. Hyperlinks require “tricks” and formatted text doesn’t always appear the way it should. If you were admin for a day, what would you change about the discussions? Do you like the layout? How about the notifications? I’d also love to hear what you think about the interest categories. Do you always start your discussions in an interest category? Do you like the way the interests are set up and displayed? Have you ever started your very own interest category? What do you think about the leaderboards? Do you strive to get to the top of the boards? Is there anything you would want to change? Help me make more wish lists!

I would just love it if all new members would have to at least read the FAQs section before starting a discussion. I'm constantly going around telling them to read these because they're always posting links to their websites, selling something, giving out their email addresses, or making repeat discussions over and over with the exact same words. I don't know what you can do to alleviate this but it sure would be nice. You've asked some great questions here the last few days and the responses are great too. Nice job everyone!

You may support an idea that I have put forward in an attempt to get new members to read the guidelines which is a questionaire on the guidelines.

Hi Kashmeresmycat! I'd like that too. I've found myself doing the same thing in my previous discussions and I've seen others doing it too. Do you have any suggestions? If you were the owner of this site, how would you make that happen?

I admit that I have only made it all the way through page eight of this discussion, which I am sure that you can verify as my name keeps popping up all over the place. I do try to read all the comments and respond where appropriate, but I have to go now, so I wanted to address at least one issue that I have not seen so far before I left. As you can tell, I am very active on certain discussions, and I "land" in a lot of other people's comment boxes. It would be great if I could get notifications when someone responds to a comment that I have left in one of these boxes. As it stands now, I have to go back to the discussion and page through the comments to see whether or not others have responded to my comments in their boxes. It would save a lot of time and effort (especially on the longer and more active discussions) if everyone that responds in a specific box gets a notification when another response is added to that response box. That would also help keep up the back and forth dialog and "flow" of a discussion. In addition, I wouldn't have to have my own "box" in a discussion in order to see whether or not there has been any updates on the discussion, especially since sometimes everything is covered by the time I go to make my own response.

Alice, I like your sense of humor! I thought of another thing related to discussions. I realize why we should not be allowed to rate our own discussions or responses, but I think that it would be nice if we could report our own discussions or comments to have them deleted. That sounds weird, huh? I am sure you are asking why we want to report ourselves, but I assure you that it does happen. There are times when I post something (like I did earlier in this discussion, for example), and then I have a "DUH" moment and realize my mistake and would like to undo it, but I can't. The only one that would be hurt by reporting my own mistake is me, so I think that we should have that option. Also, at least two of my friends have asked me to report their discussions or responses, because they accidentally put the wrong information or added something twice. It would be easier if we could just report our own mistakes instead of having to ask someone else to do it for us. On the other hand, there is a lot of paranoid thinking by some users on this site that just because another member reports something as a violation the reported item is automatically deleted with some type of "magic delete" button. I have seen you have to correct this assumption on quite a few responses in this discussion alone. I guess that being allowed to report our own mistakes and ask for them to be deleted might further this assumption, because some members might ask for their own stuff to be deleted just to create more controversy. I would hope that this would not be the case and would like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and assume that as adults we would be more mature than that, but unfortunately I have read too many things on here pointing fingers at other users already. Alright, I have given my opinions for and against this change, so now I leave it up to you to decide whether or not this request should be added to the list. Sorry for the long-winded response. I do think that it would be a beneficial suggestion, but I also see the potential for misuse, so I just wanted you to hear both sides of the argument before you decide whether or not to add it as a suggestion.

Had you only gotten through page 9... Just kidding! Everything you said makes perfect sense and I've added it all to the wish list. Thanks for ALL of your participation!

If I could change anything, it would be that once I say I DON'T want to have something as an interest, it asks, again & again. I don't personally care for broad interest categories, I don't want "Life" or "People" and because I get tired of saying "no thanks" all the time, I've gotten into the habit of just leaving the discussion at the point it asks for tags - And that's another thing! Tags, once its "full" why does it keep asking? I used to start general interest discussions, but I've learned you do get more responses if you have an interest - and that's fine - but I don't want 100s of interests, so I find some that I will post stuff I might've formally put in general interest into. I have to say, I post a lot in the "cat" topic, and while I agree with some of the people who have higher numbers, I was behind someone who hadn't posted in MONTHS for a while. I don't really care if I'm #1 in most of them, and, in fact, was surprised to find myself at #1 in a topic I hadn't really thought too much about. I guess there are some who are more competitive than I am tho...

I also don't like it when mylot keeps on asking me to tag a discussion even though I've already tagged it. Isn't one tag enough?

Hi ElicBxn! Someone in another discussion also mentioned that they'd like myLot to retain the fact that they've already said they don't want to add the interest. It's on the wish list! What do you mean by a "full" tag? Your feedback is very interesting. Thank you for taking the time to share!

I also wanted to address the topic of tagging. If I understand it correctly, the tags are used to search on related topics or "keywords". I think that it can be beneficial to allow people to tag discussions that they have not started, because sometimes other people might think of tags that might get more "hits" when searching for a related topic. However, some people put senseless and irrelevant tags on discussions. Irrelevant tags not only prevent users from finding discussions relating to their interests to respond to but also promote similar/duplicate discussions due to the fact that the irrelevant tags might supercede the real tags and thus not display a discussion when searching for an appropriate keyword. I know that you can report inappropriate tags, but I am not sure that users understand the significance of the tags enough to report them properly. I do not know how you could fix this issue, but I do think that it needs to be addressed.

hi alice I hope i can make myself clear without sounding bossy or mean, but some times some users will post discussion after discussion without pausing and each one gets a little less good 'until the last one is only one sentence like what color is your favorite? I really do not think thats a good discussion unless you could flesh it out and ask, do you know what effect different colors have on us and what colors do you prefer? Are you helped by some colors and bothered by others? well this is just off the top of my head and not all that great, but my point is some of these same users do not bother to make a comment one on all the responses we give them. I myself would rather make fewer discussions, make them best I can do, then comment back on responses to my discussions. I am not sure how you would do this but would it be logical to make us limit ourselves to the number of discussions we can make say in a twenty four hour period? I know there are probably a lot of reasons why people would not like this, but I still think we should all try to make our discussions the best that we can.

Sorry to interrup in, I think people posting here for a few months would not issue such kind of discussion, like what's your favorite bla, bla, bla. The proper reason is that they are not quite familar with the guidelines and hold that they posted, then they earned. We can not blame for those people as they deserve the low quality for that discussion as well.(not so-called discussion). In my opoion, it may help if admin widening the earning difference for the good discussion and the lousy one. Or Admin can issue a private message to remind them.

Hi again! I don't think you sound bossy or mean and I get what you're saying. I also don't think limiting the number of discussions per day would be fair though. I think there are a lot of members who store up their awesome discussions and post them all at the same time. I've seen these users (and others!) work very hard to make them great discussions. I'm not talking about "What's your favorite color" or "I'll start a story and you keep it going" or "Do you buy socks" and I know you are. Those discussions should be reported and deleted. They qualify as poll or game discussions and they add no value to our community. Meanwhile, I've also noticed that there are some wonderful members here who try to guide the users who might be going down the wrong path to the right path. Members helping members is probably the most productive way to tackle this.

If I was admin for a day, there will be one area I would look at which is not on topic so far but at the same time improve the quality of discussions. Many new users to mylot tend to skip the discussion guidelines. It does mean that many new users are voilating guidelines. The biggest reoccurance of violation is posting links in discussion. Many experienced mylotters are trying to assist by informing new members of violations in hope that they will learn about the guidelines. It also means that admin is kept busy removing all discussions and comments with the violations. My idea would be to have a multiple question section about the guidelines. It would make the new user read the guidelines. Also the new user need to answer the questions 100% correct to participate in the discussions. The aim of the idea would be to reduce the number of new users voilating the guidelines as they are aware of the guidelines. It would help admin staff, freeing up their time to do other things. So the placement of the questionaire would need to be after signing up for mylot and before they participate in discussions. Two typical questions would be in relation to referral links in the discussions and how does mylot calculate how to pay members per post as I see many of these in discussions. I did create a discussion in regards to the above idea and many members do think it is a great idea. I was also thinking about non active members. After 3 months, mylot reclaims any money earned by the member. I also believe that there are many members who have been non active for a longer period of time. Just an idea of removing those inactive accounts from the data base completely after an additional time. I know this because, my original account has been inactive since February/March 2009 due to a bug problem at the time and will no longer be active in the future as I have requested that I will keep using this account and not returning to my original account and certainly will be safe for a complete removal from the mylot data base. If there are any discussions and responses from the member who is going to be removed from the data base, can be transfered over to one non paying account called Non Registered User or Unregistered User.

If I had to stop and write the questions mentioned in my first statement, this is how it would go. Q: Are you allowed to post referral links to other programs? A: A) Yes, it is allowed B) Only if it is in relation to the topic C) No, it is not allowed. Q: Are you allowed to discuss how does mylot work out earnings? A: A) No, it is not allowed B) Yes, it is allowed They would be examples to use. Even to have the questions out of order from the guidlelines. I do believe it would certainly make new members read the guidelines instead of quickly looking at them and forgetting them like I have done in the past. If mylot staff would like help to write the questions, it could be posted as a task. I have thought about more about non active members, I can understand for members who do want to come back, but what about those who do want to have their accounts deleted for good. May be there could be an option to delete our own accounts if we no longer wish to use mylot. Of couse not that I would like to use that option myself with this account. I enjoy mylot too much.

Hi chookie1971! Interesting concept. Sort of a post-test after having read the FAQs and guidelines? How long do you think it would take before this test - with all of the correct answers - is posted on the Internet? Pretend you have been asked to write those two questions you mentioned as typical questions. I'd like to see how you'd want them written. I don't think that anything should be done with discussion contributions from inactive users. I think every inactive user should be allowed to return to myLot whenever they choose and not lose the contributions they have made to the site. jamesnitp, the Discussion Rating System or "star system" is a 100-point scale.

Hello, Alice. You seem to be getting everyone talking. The main thing I would like to see changed in notifications is I'd like to know about responses to my comments in other boxes. I get notified of comments in my own response box, but if I dip into another box and make a comment - which a lot of us do, as we like the interaction and you get more out of the discussions that way - I don't get a notification if someone responds. Unless I go back and look, or someone PMs me to tell me about it, I could miss something good, or worse, whoever came back to me may think I'm not interested in what they have to say. I don't do technology, so I don't know if it's feasible or possible, but I'd really like to see it.

Well, I don't get notifications from all my friends even though they are turned "ON" and I know I miss out on some of their discussions unless I go digging for them but still miss out on alot of them. Also.. I think it would be great if we were to get a notification when someone leaves a comment on our profile page. I don't know about others but there are times I don't go to my profile page for weeks. And I just thought it would be great to be able to get a notification so when a friends leaves a message we would know..and it would be great if we could also be able to use the code in the comments..

it might be a pain in the butt, but i wish we could change the background of what we read to a different color.not change it site wide, just how each user sees it(if they want to change it). like i have my profile black with red text because it's way easier on my eyes as i have photosensitivity. i don't expect that implemented, but i just thought i'd throw it out there.

I don't always start discussions within an interest catagory. 1. I may not know the interest catagory exists. 2. the discussion may apply to more than one interest and we are not allowed to post the same discussion in multiple catagories 3. sometimes just go on a catagory that fits the discussion and gets decent traffic. I have no idea how to start a discussion category. I'd be interested in learning how to do so. I'd like to be on more leader boards. However, I have no idea what the criteria is to become a leader other than to post often in a specific catagory & perhaps get a high rating? I guess the way the interests are displayed is ok. Though I'd prefer the my interests tab to be a drop down box & maybe list something that says.... Pets (18 new discussions today) ect. The discussion lay out is fine. Though I think it would be nice if there was a way to see what discussions your friends started in each catagory before non-friends. And I don't mean by the friends started tab. I mean like them being listed first like a search engine does for "sponsored results" or maybe have their discussions highlighted in a different color? Not that I don't enjoy posting on other people's post too. But I have quite a few I absolutly must read if I see a new post and I'd like an easier way to locate them within a category. I do want to ask though like when I write about a part of chicken in the cooking catagory it makes me re-do it because it's a censored word wich is fine if it was ment in an explicit way. However, I'm just talking about cooking KWIM? But it's hard to pick a word to equal that portion of the chicken w/o it turning into some inappropriate nick names for that part.

The layout is very readable for me, I don't see any reason to change it. Although when you are looking at a list of discussions, it would be nice to see the page numbers underneath it so that you can go directly to a certain page instead of having to go into the discussion first. Notifications are fine except for the things you've already noted. I don't pay much attention to the interest categories usually, though if one displays across the top, sometimes I will go there and see what's posted. yes, I have added my own categories, though I dont' use them that often. I don't pay attention to the leaderboards. I would like to see more feedback from Admin. For example, if a discussion is deleted, would it be difficult to sent the poster a PM with a short message stating why? Sometimes it isn't obvious. Same thing for a response that is deleted. Thx....

Hi dawnald! Interesting thought. In other words, if you know you're looking for a comment someone left you on page 8, you'd like to be able to go straight to page 8 from the list of discussions. So what happens in the display when your discussion hits 30 pages? We know you want feedback on deleted posts and we're working on that.

Hi alice, I don't think we should be ranked on an interest leaderboard if we press no thanks after responding. We can respond as a one off to a discussion but that doesn't mean there's an actual interest in the subject. I like that we can make our own interest categories and I've made two. I like the way the interests pop up along the top with the avatar of our choice on so they ae quick to spot. I wasn't too happy though when the system broke on that long weekend I had 2 Robert Maxwells and 1 Greek fisherman staring down at me all the time.

My friend, can you make some arrangements that I could view the cash I'm being paid for each discussion individually. Its just because, I could know the quality of my discussions and strive more. Regarding the interests category, I wish I could see all the available interests categories that I could choose any one among it and start the discussion. Presently only if I've kept some category in my interests, I could start a discussion in that. Have a good day my friend.

I am sorry I disagree with giving the copy/paste priviledge early. It is important to have things to work towards and that is one of the priviledges that should remain. Many of us worked hard to reach that 500 posts goal. The only thing I would change is the background color. Take it from white to a pale tan or blue. Something that is easier on the eyes.

I have to agree with you royal. The copy and paste privilege should remain the way it is. But maybe admin could add a new privilege...say something in the lines of being able to edit our posts (even just to correct any errors that we make). 100 posts we get our star. 200 posts we get to use smiley's. 500 posts we get the copy/paste feature....and say 1000 posts for the edit feature! Okay, so it's wishful thinking on my part, but maybe, just maybe it'll happen one day. Happy mylotting!

I am having a very hard time understanding what you are trying to explain in this discussion! Most of it is not clear to me! It is very confusing! really confusing! No.7 about copy and paste I still can't figure out how to do it even after I have had a number of people explain it to me! No.9 has happen to me! I downloaded a picuture to a story once and the picture never showed up! It was a very interesting discussion and with no photo,no responses! Mylot should not have leader boards! I have come across to many people who worry about about that and nothing wlse on Mylot! The leaderboards should be discontinued!!!! I do have a wish list and here it is:1.Mylot would have more people looking out for Mylotters who are the trolls and the stalkers! 2.Mylot needs to be alot more aware of people putting photo's on Mylot that should not be like naked women! 3.Some discussions being just delelted because some people on Mylot are jerks when theses discussions shouldn't be!4.If something is reported, like a photo,a discussion or a person,it is looked into right away! Not like the next day or week! Basicly back ground checks on people who are on Mylot.Mylot has alot of nice people but alot of nasty people, too! 5.That are profile pages didn't list our rankings for all the catagories for all the world to see! I don't like that at all and I think it is stupid!!! To much information for people to feed on! The nasty kind!6.Mylot members should have their accounts deleted,by Mylot,if they are here today and gone tomorrow! The people who don't care to be regular members on Mylot!
30 Dec 09
Hi blue65packer! We are aware of the inappropriate behavior and have been/are taking measures to curb said behavior. Please report any photos that are inappropriate and we will promptly remove them. Discussions are only deleted if they do not comply with the guidelines or Terms of Use of our site. Everyone at myLot is given the benefit of the doubt. There's no need to do background checks. Action is taken based on behavior on myLot. You can customize your profile so your rankings are not displayed. In fact, you can customize your profile to the point that there is absolutely nothing showing at all. I don't think it's fair to delete a myLot member's account simply because he or she chose not to return the next day, the next week, the next month, or even the next year. Things happen in everyone's lives that can keep them from returning to our website.

i don't think users should be able to copy and paste before reaching 500 post. I think it should be a reward for being a dedicated user here. I think 500 is reasonable. I don't understand why so many people have a problem with that. Alot of people join this site all the time they might post 100 or less post and you think they deserve the priledge to copy and paste. No thats not right. I agree i like mylot the way it is. No one going to be happy if we keep changing everything. You can't please everyone I think everything should stay the same. maybe we should take a poll if you want to change a few things about mylot. I just saying we have alot of mylot users who are loyal they stay because of the rules that we have. Without rules this place would be caos. Oh about task that give people 1.00 i think people should get like 2 cent just for trying if they were off just by a few mistakes. I tried doing a task i spent 1 hour or more writing that paper. Plus i had to do research she said it was good but i had some spelling errors.

My reason being when you already tried posting your response and after pressing 'post response' you suddenly get a page where it says 'page not available' and it's asking you to relaod - a total bummer! You already had your thoughts in the post and having to re-type it, you lose the essence of what you have written.
