Making Your Bed! Do You Make Your Bed Each Morning??

When I was working and going out each morning, I would usually leave my bed unmade. Sometimes I would make it up, but most times I would not. Do you make your bed up each morning after you get up? Why? Why not?

I now usually get up 7:30 in the morning, while I have to show up in the lab in 8:15. So really there is not so much time for me to making my bed. Now after getting up, I cover my bed with a cloth, so that It seems much better. I think if someone will visit my bedroom everyday, I will have the custom to make my bed.

....Hi there dandan07, I think you and I think alike. A visitor makes one want to give a good impression. So I, like you, will take the time to make my bed, if I am expecting company. If it is only me, then the bed stays the same. I learned today about dust getting on the bed during the day, if you don't make it up, never thought about it before, so I might just start doing as you do and cover the bed, to keep the dust away, Thanks so much for your reply. Take care.

...Hi there BART78, Happy 2010. Every day there is some new insight I gain from the people on this site. Now I never thought about the bed getting dust on the linens, if you don't make it up in the morning. That is a point well taken. I have to remember, and at least take the time to cover the entire bed, even if I don't make it up completely. Thanks for sharing. Take good care.

Yes I make my bed every morning because I like to keep my home neat. I would not like to have an emergency where strangers (police or ambulance personnel) come into my home and and it is not tidy with the beds made.

If you had an emergency, the last thing you'd be worrying about is whether your beds are made up. Anyway... I normally don't make my bed up in the morning; it's a bit tedious trying to make up a waterbed, so I either don't make it up or I just throw blankets and coverlets up to the pillow so it looks like it's made up.

....Hi there whiteheather39. Happy 2010. Your response made me think of parents who say wear clean everything,so that you would not be embarrassed if you have an accident. What you speak of is certainly something to think about. There is an impression one gives if their home is scattered to the wind so to speak. Thanks for your response. Take care.

...Hi there coolcoder, Happy 2010. Now, I am picturing a waterbed, and I can't determine how you make it up. Would not a sheet on it with a blanket or spread on the top of it be considered made up? Are you able to tuck things in under a waterbed. I would think bed linens lying on top would be considered made up for a waterbed?? Anyway, you do what most of us do. If I expect company I will make up my bed. Otherwise, I leave it. Take care. Thanks for responding.

I used to make my bed every morning before I ever did anything else. That was until last year then I suddenly stopped making it. I now only do it 'once in a while'. I have a huge big duvet during the winter and it only needs fluffing up so that's all I do. In the warmer months though when I have a blanket I do straighten it up so that it looks like it was just made fresh every morning. In the summer when I only have a top sheet it's even easier to make it.

...Hi, hi mysdianait, So it sounds to me like you are a hybrid. Half and half. "o) I think that whatever works for an individul, that is what they should do. We have four sisters in our family, two are neat freaks, so to speak, one is in between and the other is totally unconcerned with conventional wisdom. The last one would be moi. I stopped making my bed a long time ago, and when I was traveling and staying in hotels on my job, I got spoiled having the maid come everyday and change the linens, then I wanted that at home :o). Thanks for your response. Take good care.

...Hi yolanda19191, Happy 2010. Well, I think it is a good habit to have, if you want to do it. I am glad that you learned how to make a bed. Over here, I am assuming you are in another country besides the USA, maybe not. But at any rate, each year I think they have some kind of contest, where hotel workers try to see who can make a bed the fastest. It is very funny, looking at all of them running to be the first one finished. So anyway, good that you learned. Take care. Thanks for your response.

Hiya artistry, Making my bed right away was a must before but not so much now as I have the freedom to say when I can make it and when not well almost. If I had my way I would be flinging the windows open in a morning and opening the bedclothes and leaving them close to the window and let the sunshine get to them. Having said that I would get a whole barrage of protests from the other dwellers of this clan that would not make good reading here so I leave the bed open as soon as I can fling off all the clothes onto a chair and air the bed for as long as I can.

Hiya artistry, Well now I´m glad I made you laugh that´s good that´s great what am I saying? What did I say to make you laugh? Anyway I usually air all the blankets and sheets right away from the mattress itself. I don´t use spray as such I let the sunlight stream in and do it´s work. If you put blankets outside even if you can´t wash them you are doing yourself a favour because it kills bacterias say if everyone has a cold this is what I do if I can of course. Also those big bath towels go outside too as soon as the Weather picks up as they don´t always need to be washed the same day. Hey but I do wash them (grin).

...Hi there lovinangelsinstead21, You gave me a good laugh for my morning and I love to laugh. It's good for the soul. "o). Having said that, it is a good thing that you want to let the sun hit the bed. Probably a good idea as well, as long as you have time afterwards to let it air out for a good while, to spray the mattress with an air santizer, we can't wash them, so the next best thing I guess would be to spray away, or as you want to do, let the sunshiine in. Thanks for the laugh and for your response. Take care.

Sometimes I do, sometimes not. I get out of bed to feed the animals. It's usually just daylight so it depends what I do next. If I have a coffee, I generally sit at the computer and that's it for a while. I will usually make the bed when I get dressed but if I get dressed to do something specific, I go and do that...the bed will then get left unmade. Sometimes I get back to it, sometimes not. If I go out for the day I like to make it but it's not necessarily a given.

I went in to my room this morning at 10am and noticed my untidy unmade bed. I thought of your discussion and made it immediately. Perhaps I would have made it anyway...now we will never know and I fear I am forever doomed to look at my unmade bed (or anyone else's unmade bed) and I will think of you and your discussion and guilt will coerce me to make that bed.

...Hi there MsTickle, Hope that all is going well with you and the animals all. Sounds like flexibility and contentment to me :o). Which is a good thing. When I used to make my bed religously in the morning I was fine, when I stopped doing it every morning I was better. So I think ones comfort zone at home should be just that, whatever it takes to make and keep one happy is the way to go. Thanks so much for stopping by and take good care. Have a great week-end.

I like my bed to be made in the morning, it makes the room feels tidy. My rule is the last person out of the bed makes it. My boyfriend isn't too good at remembering to make the bed, so I nag at him and end up making it myself. It doesn't take much just to straighten the quilt. Also it I think it keeps the bed warmer for when you go to get back in it at night time.

...Hi cinderella2007, Making your bed does make the entire room look tidy, I do agree. Hmmm, hadn't thought about the part about the bed being warmer when you get back in it at night, that's a good point as well. I say that if you make your bed in the morning or if you don't make it, it is what makes you happy in the comfort of your home that is important. It is your snuggle space and what works for you is the real deal. "o) Take it easy and thanks for your response.

I am some what lazy to make my bed . Sometimes late afternoon or when i know if any one comes home ,i will fix the sheets and blankets a little. or otherwise i will make my bed in night only. i have double cot in house and it is nearly attached to wall for two sides. so i feel lazy to remove whole blankets and sheets and rearrange them daily in mornings.as i am in house(house wife)also,i will not make my bed in mornings ,when all household work completes i will go for bed, then i will rearrange the blankets. and i change the sheets and blankets after 2,3 days.

...Hi ank_47, I can't rememner just how long it has been since I stopped making my bed in the morning. I thought after a while, that it was a waste of time to make the bed in the morning, only to mess it up again at night. If someone is coming over to my place, I will make the bed for appearances sake only. Someone mentioned that they cover their bed to keep the dust off of it, which I think is a good idea. Thanks so much for your reply, take it easy.

...Hi there aerous, Good for you to take the time to make the bed. It does, as some have mentioned, make the room look much neater when the bed has been made. It is understandable that at times you would forget to do it, as you are in a hurry or just don't have thetime. Whatever one's choice regarding making up one's bed is the right one for them. Our home is supposed to be our comfort zone, as far as I am concerned Thanks for your reply, and take care.

I make my bed each and everyday. I just can't see going about my business all day with the beds unmade. I'm sure its all part of my OCD that I suffer with where everything has to be in its place. I can't stand clutter or a dirty house. Its just the way I am. My two grown daughters always say why make a bed when you are going to get back in it. I don't know how they came out thinking that way when I am the way I am. Very strange.

...hi lelin1123, You make me laugh out loud, which is a good thing. You must have things in place and so you order your life that way. Many, many people do, you don't have to have OCD, to want things in place. I am in your daughters' camp, my sisters are with you. Your daughters came out that way, as I am sure you know, if you think about it, because of the other half of the chromosomes. Thanks for making my evening fun. Take care.

I used to make my bed every single day before i moved in with my boyfriend. he doesn't get up at the same time as me, so its hard for me to make the bed because he is in it about 20 minutes after I get out of it. I used to make it instantly when i woke up before i even left the room. that way I wouldn't have to worry about it. I guess I didn't move around as much either. now there is more work I have to put into it.

Happy 2010 to you as well. Yes life does mean getting used to new habits. Adjusting is somewhat hard, but its manageable. I do usually get up and try to straighten my side of the bed when I get up. That way It looks a little neat when I get out. But its all about getting used to new things.

...Hi nrn2003, Happy 2010. Life brings about changes, and so we adjust. I am one who thinks that we do become creatures of habit. When things change a bit, we get thrown a little. But I would guess that you still get up in the morning, or did for a while, and reach to make the bed, forgetting that you can't do it? Just out of habit. Thanks so much for your response. Take care.

...Hi there saphrina, Happy 2010. Well, aren't you the one? :o). It is a very good thing to have a willing partner who relieves one of the task of making up the bed. Good for you, now my question to you would be, if he didn't, would you make the bed or would it not matter to you? I am in the camp of leaving the bed as it is, freedom is.... I also think that, what makes one happy is what one should do. Either way is good. Take care. Thanks very much.

.....Hi derek_a, Happy 2010. This sounds awfully easy to me, and it helps you to move along with the rest of your day. Let's hear it for the time saving bed. I just don't see the need to make up a bed, pull and tuck and fix it up, all neat and nice, and come back in a few hours and undo all that work. Time is priceless, you can't get it back, so I save some of mine by letting my bed stay unmade in the morning and move on down the line. I do say that if one wants to make their bed in the morning, that's all good as well. Thanks so much. Take care.

I do make my bed each morning. I did when I was working, I have had this feeling if something happened I would not want to send someone in my house with it messed up. Now I am not working, but I do it because I feel it looks better. Also if someone comes over I think it looks better on me to have the bed made. Have a great day.

I actually do make my bed every morning. I have been doing this for years. My husband even thinks it is funny because there are day when he comes home from work and the rest of the house could be a mess but the bed is always made. I do the kids beds as well or have them do it if there is time in the morning. I think there is nothing better than getting into a neat bed at night, instead of one that the blankets and sheets are wrinkled and crumpled.

...Hi there 4ofmyown, I think making one's bed in the morning is a sign of a person who likes order. Now whether they get it out not is another question. But that person, in my opinion would like to have their desk orderly if they work at a desk, their car not junky, and other things pretty much in decent order. Might not be the case all the time, but that is what I think. Thanks so much for stopping by. Take care.

...Hi craftyhomebody, Welcome to the ranch, it's a lot of fun. Happy 2010. The things you say about the house being cleaned, are certainly worth noting. Making your bed in the morning is a good thing, by all accounts. It's just if you want to take the time to do it. The point about getting a good night's sleep in a neatly made bed is a subjective one, I do think. What I mean by that is, if you are a person who needs to have your bed made up before you get into it at night to sleep well, otherwise you toss and turn, then your mind has gotten into that mode. Not that it necessarily helps all people to sleep better in a neat bed, but that person who it is important to suffers, if they do not have the bed all neat and nice at night. Arm chair psychology on my part "o). Thanks so much for your response. Take care.
