The bitter story of SUGAR...

Philippines

There has been an ongoing shortage of sugar in our area. This sweet commodity suddenly became scarce. The unexpected dwindling supply shoot up prices as expected and created hoarding among greedy business enterprises. It is slowly affecting the industries that use sugar as raw material. Earlier, we have experienced shortage in rice supply that led to rationing. With the conflict about sugar, we are now dubbed as the shortage capital of the world. It is a not so unreasonable declaration considering the oil companies are threatening for a limited supply if the government continue to question and run after their unpaid taxes. On their part, the government will act as a superhero and pledged to provide 150,000 kilos of sugar for an area of 10,000,000 people. Relying on the ever reliable rough estimate, the allocation will provide one teaspoon of sugar for the first 500,000 lucky individual. That is how the government is addressing this issue. Very sweet of them.hhmmm.. Regards

Sweet indeed! Even those of us living within the sugar capital of the Philippines have felt the shortage, too - even when sugarcanes are planted in many of the lots within a few meters away from our house!

Is that so?Sad to hear that.It seems that the government has no plans to support the ailing sugar industry. Regards

There is still sugar on the supermarket shelves but the prices have gone very high. At home we limit sugar intake for the milk and coffee we drink everyday. It's healthier in that way. And I have been reducing sugar while baking. Good thing, my baking is for home use only not for commercial use or else the customers will go mad tasting cakes not so sweet. Anyways, the sugar shortage and the way the government is handling it is so not sweet.

one teaspoon wow how generous but hey look on the bright side, here in the US we are always being told we are getting more and more obese and we all need to cut down on sugar. sugar is really sort of empty calories that make you fat but do not do much for the body. so maybe those people in your country will lose weight get slim and healthy thats always good. seriously maybe we should be selling our excess sugar to you folks wherever you are. good luck.
