How much food do you throw away?

I hope not if you are replying to this & on the frugal living board of all places *LOL* I give the kids smaller servings for them to eat. If they want more they can have more. I got tired of finding half eaten or hardley touched bowls of food in odd spot too old to save or toss quick into the fridge then I let the dog have at it. I know going thru the fridge I have found some bowls that were forgotten about and had to be tossed out. I hate that especially if it was something good or that could be added to another meal. Old produce if I can't freeze it or use it right away I put it in our compost bin and atleast it can be used again once it's decomposed.

I throw very little away. I freeze a lot because I live alone and need only small amounts of food. I'll buy a big roast and portion it out for various dishes and freeze it till I can cook it. It helps that I have two 4-legged garbage disposals, too! I throw away most bones and stuff but not before I boil them to get all the flavor out and use it in soups and to pour over dog food. If I have little bits of vegetables or potatoes or fruit, I will put them in a tupperware bowl in the freezer. When it's full, I make soup! I only have one bag of garbage per week and most of it is packaging and bones, toilet paper rolls and other stuff.

I have a 4 legged garbage disposal also and he gets more than his fair share some days. I often comment to the kids that it's really sad when the dog is eating better than you 3! Plus doing that saves on dog food too ;0) As I mentioned to Peavy that I would like to do that with the bowl in the freezer.

I really don't like to throw out food, I try and make sure that we use up any left overs that we have, but every so often they end up going bad before anyone has a chace to eat them and unfortunately they have to be thrown away. I try to avoid this as much possible, but when it is bad it is bad, I try to reuse thinng, when we have left overs most of the time I will send them to work with my husband the next day for his lunch. That is a great way to use everything up.

I very seldom throw food away. If it looks like I'm not going to eat it before it spoils or I just get tired of it, I freeze it until I'm hungry for it again. I live alone, so I don't have to worry about what others think about leftovers. I can eat the same thing for several meals in a row. If there's just a few vegetables left in the pan, I put it in a special container in the freezer, then when it's full, I make soup with it. The same with small amounts of meat.

I think I've seen you or Dragon post about that container in the freezer. I think I should run that past hubby for an idea.... as the object would be to get him to eat the soup!

If he's picky, you may not want to tell him. ;) You can make some amazingly good soup like that.

He can be picky that's the tough part. But he'll never know if it's pureed either ;0)

I know what you mean- we were throwing way so much food-too much waste. what we now do is use some of my thick whiteplates and any leftovers are puton this plate with the exception of salad and coveredi n sarun wrapa nmd quickly frozen for another meal. Some Fridays we take out the whiteplates to defrost a variety of dinners for a meal!

I will try the best to finish all the food because my tradition rules said it is not good to throw away the unfinish food. Tried to think about poor starving people in India or poorer country and you will avoid throwing food. Besides that, i will avoid cooking in large portion to avoid wastage. If there is extra food left over, i will distribute to my neighbour and friends. Or else keep the left over food in refrigerator and heat it up tomorrow. i can finish a loaf of bread in two days before it expire.

That is very nice of you to share with your neighbors and friends. We try to heat things up in a few days from the time it was initally made. I also like to think about the fact that groceries keep getting more expensive and some weeks are tighter than others and it makes those weeks easier to feed everyone.

As much as possible, I don't want to throw food.. Because I always think that we are lucky to have something in our table. There are a lot of people who cannot eat thrice or even twice a day because of poverty, so, we are very much lucky. I hope everyone will not throw food away. It can be given to our dog and other pets.

That is very true. When push comes to shove people do start skipping meals to they can have atleast one decent meal during the day. Sometimes decent may just be a bowl of soup or a light sandwich.

little to none.if anything's leftover,it gets incorporated into a new meal. after living in apartments with room service ketchup tomato sauce and spaghetti to eat,i let NOTHING go to waste in this house. my family knows better to than waste in front of me LOL

Smaller portions are a really smart idea. We rarely have food that gets tossed in the trash. Most items are saved in a container or wrapped in foil and frozen for later use. That cuts down on the amount of money spent or wasted on food.

Too dang much. I am the only one in the house who eats leftovers usually and my mother-in-law has a tendency to come over, cook way too much food and then leave it. But I try not to waste food. It bothers me.

We are not left over eaters. And now that I have a new garbage disposal, I am just going crazy with chopping up food in the sink. I know that this sounds really bad, but I think that this is just a phase that I am going through or something.

I hope since you have posted that this phase is over. It really is to your advantage to eat left overs and save a lil bit of your hard earned money. If you haven't noticed food prices are going up where most salaries are not.

I grew up in a family where there was no room to tolerate these type of things! Thus I have grown up to hate throwing food and also those that do the same! I have a great deal of respect for those that put into their bowls or plates whatever they will be able to finish and then add as and whenever necessary! It maybe because that's what I do but then! The food that you throw may feed some hungry person of you dont take it in the first place! So you got what I mean! Nice topic eh!

In our house if there's any left overs, there kept for our work lunches & it takes time to learn how to cook the right amount of food for a family of any size unless you've done it it a lot, I'm from a family of seven so we cook big & eat big but were not big........

I hear ya! It's always good to cook at home. Not only does it take time to learn to cook the right amount but with growing kids their appetites grow from when they are toddlers to grade school to high school so that can be a challenge. I use left overs as lunch as well weather it be at home or when I'm at work. No point in wasting anything.

I throw a lot of food away and it really makes me sick when I think of the starving children in other countries. My mom gave me a great tip when I buy my meat I freeze it in tiny sections just enough for me and the kids to eat. It also cuts down on porton size if you are watching what you eat.

I notice that with some kids, they always have a lot left over! And I realized it's because the parents are always giving them adult sized portions. My sister does like you, gives small portions and if they are still hungry she can always get more. It seems to work and my nephew never has anything to toss away. I hate when I forget about stuff in the fridge and it gets old. In the past I would throw a lot away because I couldn't remember when I bought it or how old it was. Did I buy this orange last week? Or last month?? So my new thing is that when we come home from grocery shopping, I take a sticky note and write down the perishable items with the date we bought them and stick it to the fridge. This has really helped me remember what is in there and we rarely throw away spoiled food anymore. But we do still end up throwing away left overs. I have to cook smaller portions I guess :) After a few days of left overs, we are tired of them and then they get old and have to be tossed. I guess that is the next thing I have to tackle - cooking smaller meals.

I actually do throw away a lot of food. I hate to do it, and I always get frustrated when I do "Oh, someone could have eaten this!". But the last time I tried really hard not to waste food, I drove myself over the edge! My husband hates leftovers. Eating something once a week is more than enough for him, unless it's something he really likes like taco meat or mac cheese. The older 3 kids eat school lunch, but will eat some left overs on weekends. I've at least got them doing that much. The little 2 rarely eat the meal in the first place, so why would I give it to them a second time around? And me... well, dinner is something I've done my best to make healthier, but it's not healthy enough for me to eat it twice a day. Once in awhile I do, but not very often.

Since I live alone, I don't really waste a lot of food because I only buy enough to feed me really However, when I lived with my parents, we would waste a lot of food. Younger siblings would play with their food and turn it into such an inedible mess, that some stuff HAD to be wasted

we not usually through away the food because its too expensive; if the food has 1 or 2 days and nobody wants to eat this, we usually gives this food to my dogs,, bt of course, if the meal is in a bad state or descomposed, of course we trough away. well, have a nice day and good luck!

I hate to waste food and make sure I take only the amount i can eat. Even then if a situation arises when i cant finish is it I prefer to keep it in refrigerator for later use rather than tossing it into the waste. I think its the biggest sin , we earn our food and by wasting it we insult ourselves and GOD.

As much as possible, I try not to. A lot of people are dying of hunger that's why I value every morsel that is left from the previous day. Give them to the poor if you don't want to eat it anymore. Don't let it rot
