My son won't eat what I give him!

My son is just now starting to experience baby food. He is great with the fruits and vegetables, but WILL NOT eat the meat baby food no matter how hungry he is. I'm worried he's not going to get the protein he needs if he won't eat the meat. Are there any mothers out there that have experienced this or have any suggestions?

Wow, picky little guy he is. I wonder if there is a combo of beans and rice baby food available? Beans and rice together make a good source of protein. I might stay away from giving a baby soy products, because it can for some reason mess with the hormone levels. I was a psych major in college, and that is one of the things my instructor who is also a child psychologist told us in class. I personally have not done any research on it, but am taking her at her word. Also consult with your pediatrician in regards to his diet, perhaps he can recommend something.

I haven't seen any rice and bean stuff at the store, but I can always make my own. I have heard some cautions about soy formula and stuff, but haven't really looked into it because he isn't lactose intolerant. Maybe I'll do a little research. He also has a doctor's appointment next week, so I can get some input from there too. Thanks for the response!

Thank your stars for that. Being a veg is a great thing. You should keep him on that diet and add protein rich stuff such as soya. Let me hug your little one. He is great to have taken this decision!!

When my son was a baby he wouldn't eat all I gave him, either. But I knew he was taking a multi-vitamin the doctor prescribed and he was drinking a lot of milk for protein, and so I didn't worry too much about it. Now he's four, and he still doesn't eat all his food, and I still don't worry. Kids can be picky like that. However, if you are concerned, then you should probably talk to your doctor about it.

My son also has his prescribed multi vitamin from his doctor. I think it's just him maybe learning new tastes. He went a long time just tasting milk. I can see it being a bit of an adjustment. I'll just try again in a few weeks and see if he's warmed up to it at all. Thanks for the response! Have a good day!

It is a starting stage for your baby to be picky but as you get him to introduce to different kinds of food she would get use to eat it later as she get familiarize with the taste of the food. that is only normal as she grow older it would no longer be a problem.

I kind of figure it won't be a permanent problem. I'll just keep trying it out every few weeks and see if he becomes more receptive. Thanks for the input! Have a good day!

If you are worried the protein is not enough as nutrition, you could add the protein element into the vegetable or fruits and then stir it. There is meringue powder on sale in the market, saying Anyway brand. Sometimes I would like to make the fruit juice with stirring a spoon of the protein powder. I am not sure if your kids can eat the protein element at that age, you could go to the doctor for help.

I do have some protein powder here at the house, but I'm not sure if that is something that is safe for a baby. I will have to ask his doctor before I try it, but it's not a bad idea. Thanks for the thought!

I think I will try the beans. There are lots of different options of those and I bet their consistency is easy to make into baby food. Thanks for the input!

Gerber has chicken with sweet potato.. my son didn't hate it but he didn't go crazy wanting more either. Babies will depend on mother's milk or formula for a while so they will be getting a good their calcium and nutritional needs from milk. You could try making chicken soup and in a food processor take potatoes(boiled) and some of the chicken soup as well as a bit of the chicken and make your own baby food that way ;) When I used to make chicken soup i wouldn't put much spices anyway.. I'd put very little salt for the sole purpose of our son eating from it. After I take out about 3 meals worth for my son, I add more salt and so on to the pot. He loved it! So give it a try if you want ;) I started doing this once he was 6months of age. Before that between 3 - 5 months i would stick to only a few type of baby food. Or feed him a mix of banana and orange that I would make at home.. no preservatives and unwanted extras that way. I gradually introduced more foods to him until he almost eats anything we eat.. just a touch less spices and salt of course... we're eating healthier because of him lol

That's a good idea. I made my own but didn't put any spices at all or mix it with anything. Maybe I will try doing some concoctions and see if we can find something he likes. If I use baby food that is store bought, I make sure there are no preservatives. I also just make my own since I have a steamer and food processor here at the house. Thanks for the ideas!

I'm a mom of ten children, and foster mom of over fifty. I quite buying baby food long ago, when it hit me - what did people do before baby food? From then on, I went according to my child's teeth, and I fed him what he could handle from the table. Your milk is all he needs for the first year. Then offer him naturally soft foods. My older babies loved peanut butter sandwiches, and that would give your child protein. Natural peanut butter on whole wheat bread. I torn them into small pieces, and they gobbled them up.

I wanted to try peanut butter, but they say he's too little for it. What you say makes total since. He has 2 teeth and is pretty good at chewing. I also like making my own baby food at home. It just seems so much more wholesome than something that's been sitting on a shelf for however long. I value your input. You have much more experience than I do! Thanks!

We usually just try a couple bites and when he spits it all out we don't force it on him. I'm going to try some different beans and see if he likes those. Thanks for the response!

I think its a good thing that he is more veggies and fruits baby. There are a lot of substitute for meat when you are talking about the protein intake of your son. If he likes veggies then beans are a good substitute for meat. Your son kinda amazes me because my nephews are all meat-lovers. They seldom eat veggies. They only eat when forced to do so. When I have my kids, I want them to eat veggies and fruits too. =)

I didn't eat much meat when I was little, so I guess I shouldn't be frustrated that he is just taking after his mom! I was thinking about trying some beans and seeing if that would be a winner. At least he doesn't fight eating his veggies...yet...

oh yeah I remeber those days, first of all have you tasted the meats? They are nasty. I would not worry about him eating the meats right now. You are suppose to go slow on introducing too many new things at a time. The chicken as I remember was more liked than the others...and when they don't like it, just cover it up with a little bit of the fruit they are eating. I use to play a game, two bites of fruit, a vegetable then a half a bite of meat uncovered. if you didn't eat the meat the first time, I was covering it up with fruit for two bites. They spit everything back out anyway. Good luck

They smell nasty. I made my own by steaming it and then pureeing it until it was smooth. It wasn't so bad. The canned meats smell like cat food, so I can't imagine that they taste that good. I tried mixing some chicken with fruit and he was not fooled. I was super picky about eating meat when I was younger too. Maybe he's just taking after his mom.

I don't think you have to worry. If I were you, I'd not force him to eat that, but just stop offer it to him and then after 10-15 days I'd tried to offer it again. You said you've just started baby food, so your baby still doesn't know what like or not. maybe he'll start to like meat some time later. If you're worry for the proteins, you can ask the doctor if and how often you can give him yolk. Also, because meat is important for the iron, you can give him broccoli, spinach, millet when he reached the appropriate age for these foods.

We don't try to force it on him very often. We have tried a total of 3 times to get the meat to work. So far, it hasn't been successful. He has a doctor appointment next week, so I will ask then. Thanks for your input!

wow you got yourself a vegetarian baby! Yous should consult to your baby ped, since he/she knows what is best for your baby's nutrition. Give him vitamins as well if you are really worried. Yah soya is a good source of protein, so maybe you should look for food that are made from soya but are also taste good, (I dont like the taste of soya). Like in my town, there's a veg restaurant that offers soya milk, really good!

He does get his daily vitamins, so he has his iron. You are the second person to mention soya. I've never heard of it. Is it a milk? Where do you get it?
