I'm overhearing the kids in my neighborhood right now singing a Korean song from a popular Korean soap opera aired on local TV, it was so funny 'coz they were singing like they could really understand what they're singing in which obviously they do not because they are not Koreans..lol. I'm quite guilty on this one, but I like listening and singing Chinese songs because primarily I'm Chinese who sometimes mistaken as a Korean..lol, and I like some Chinese pop songs.. I also like to listen some j-k pop, but just listen, I used to sing along Japanese songs from my favorite anime ost but I look for the lyrics online and memorized the songs but I get the English interpretation so that I could understand what I'm singing.. I noticed that some Korean artist became quite popular here in the Philippines and most of them ruled the music charts, I admit they're quite cool and current on their mtvs, but singing along to their songs seem ridiculous and besides I find it quite hard to read the lyrics.. I bet most of us are into listening and or singing a song in a third language..

I agree with you sometimes we don't appreciate songs we don't understand, no matter how beautiful it is to others. I do appreciate only foreign songs that has English adaptation or with spanish lyrics as I understand a little of Spanish.

you're right, it's also nice to listen to an English adaptation of a popular foreign song..

I think listening and following a song in a language we dunno is especially helpful for kids to develop their tougue muscles, just to get use to different vowels and consonants. Professional linguistics has confirm that one of the difficulties that adult encountered in learning language is that the muscles in the audio organs are fixed to their mother tongue mostly, and therefore have difficulties in imitating other sounds. Maybe it's just some idea that we should spread - singing a song that we dun understand!

My brother did the same thing when he was younger. He often listened to English songs, he didn't understand the words at that time, but he still liked to sing along. When I listen to Japanese or Russian music I tend to do the same. I understand some Japanese and a bit Russian but not enough to really understand the lyrics. I still like to sing along, because I like the melodies a lot and it is hard for me not to sing along
