How old are you when you learned how to cook?

What was your age when you learned how to cook? Did you do that initiatively or just because you are obligated to do so? What made you decide to learn? In my case I think I was already 24 when I decided to cook because I saw my brother and sister in law cooking unique dishes that is why I imitated them to do so.

Wow that is great that you can make egg curry. I like some Indian cuisines because of the spices. We are cooking Chicken curry here in the Philippines and sometimes it really taste so great because of the taste like professional Indian cuisine.

I was 8 when I tried to cook some thing when my dad and mom had gone to watch a movie and left me and brother back home. Although we had every thing ready but we wanted to cook some thing for our own self. We could not do a proper job and messed up things. This is not an easy job.

So what do you usually cook when you are still a kid?

I've been cooking and baking from a very young age. The first time I made my own food I was 11 but I always used to bake alone when I was younger, as I used to bake apple pie or crumble very often. Obviously my parents watched me to make sure I was safe but it was me who did all the work (including the washing up) I'm still learning to cool though. Thanks to my wife I'm picking some of the things which she likes and she enjoys having me cook for her. I just wished I had time to learn more :)

Hi Metatronik! I learned to cook at a very young age. If I remember correctly, I learned a couple of ways of cooking eggs when I was in kindergarten. When I got a little older, I started learning how to cook other viands and menus. Not that I am obligated to learn to cook so I can cook for my parents. I just really wanted to learn and I think such learning is beneficial to me.

Wow that is very good idea at least you are eager to cook at very young age. So meaning to say you are also opening the gas stove if that is the case?

I started cooking when I was about 12 years old because of the fact that I had seen my mother cooking all the time and I wanted to learn to be more like her. However, my first few attempts in the kitchen were pretty bad failures and I really didn't learn to cook until I was about 20 years old. I only started cooking then because I wanted to eat things that were different from what my mom cooked and I also knew that I eventually wanted to be a wife and a wife does need to know how to cook.

I learned how to cook probably around 13-14 years old. I told my mom i wanted to help her in the kitchen and she started teaching me everything she knew, little by little. I decided to learn how to cook because i noticed how exhausting my mother had seemed around that time (she's disabled) and i just wanted to take a load of her shoulders...Now i'm 18 and i cook everyday and my older sisters are 23 and 28 and still burn their eggs...lol

I learned to cook when I was 14 or 15. I was forced to learn because I need to cook for myself when my parents are out working. I never learned how to cook, so I cook only simple dishes like fried rice or fried noodles. After working, I was sent to Oregon for a one year assignment by my company. That's when I learn to cook better. I tried to cook mixed vegetables and soup. Although not delicious, but is edible

Although I have tried, but still I am not good at cooking. I suppose you can cook better than me. I have once cook for my ex, but she wasn't impressed by the dish. So you can imagine how ordinary my cooking is. I think interest and talent is important for us to cook better food. I lack of both unfortunately. It's good that your family is giving you some inputs to the dish you cook. You can make use of to improve further.

Wow at least you have really tried your best. I must say that I am not really good in cooking but at least people still appreciate it. I am really meticulous in terms of taste. Though at times there are soup that does not have really taste as what my brother told me, it is lack of salt but for me it could be better than too much salty.

I have been cooking since I was a little kid. When I was girlscout we had to learn to cook. I remember the first dinner I cooked - grilled cheese. I burnt them, but my dad said they tasted fantastic. My kids also learned to cook when they were younger. It seemed like the only time we had together some days was while we were cooking then eating.

I started seriously cooking when I was 14... my parents had a Restaurant and my mum was the main cook so I started helping in the kitchen with the rest of the staff I learnt so much!... by the time I was 16 I was allready cooking in the big kitchen... and had by then my own creations! I love to cook!...when I moved away from my country[ I did so many jobs...well I guess one have to][ but in the mean time I learnt hairdressing, dressmaking... and so on... not in the same order mind you... but those skills help me along the way and Im glad I have them. For the past 15 years I have being a cook, chef, and catering assistant, I retired a year ago but I still have a passion for cooking... today I cook for my family and friends...as I love entertaining my home is often "the place" to be! Hi there... at the moment I Am trying to create gourmet meals for one...since a lot of people nowadays seem to live on their own...bachelors...singles...whatever!I did have a blog about it but I just happen to get upset with it so I just erased it...but I will have another one soon! At the moment[ because here where I live] winter is coming I Am cooking warm foods...like...risottos...casseroles...warm salads...soups...and grills as well...served with potato...kumara mash...and roasted vegetables of all kinds...we are lucky to have all the produce here...but I Am diferent I just use the vegetables in season for one thing is cheaper...and in the other hand that is the way nature intended to be! so my friend happy cooking!

Already in my 20's...that's already a bit late I think so. I think most girls learn to cook by 18 or even younger. I wasn't enjoying it at first. But when I got the hang of it, it was alright. But eating the food is the real thrill... hehe. I'm a food lover.

Actually I learned to cook at the age of 25. I mean that's the time when I started cooking on my own. It started when I moved in with my partner. I really had the enthusiasm to cook but when I was still staying with my parents, my dad won't allow me to and I was always being said to keep out of the kitchen because I was just sort of messing around. But now I am proud to say that I know how to cook already and my partner served as my inspiration.

Oh well! no offense but I totally disagree with your Dad from stopping you in cooking just because you are messing around, I mean that would be basically the thing will happen especially if you are just new in the kitchen. Good thing my Dad is not like that though he kept on telling me that I must cook the usually dishes or the practical ones instead of the dishes that came from the recipe book. I had this enthusiasm of cooking too especially I am planning for my diet plan.

It's okay because I get that feedback almost all the time. I am not really that affected but also because when I was still young all I do in the kitchen is to sneak and get some food. LOL!! That is also why I cannot blame my dad as well.

I learned cooking rice when I was in my elementary but start cooking like frying fish or egg I was already in my college days. Cooking meals I learned it after my graduation from college. That's the only time I have specialized cooking menu or entree.

So what are the meals that you specialized? I still remember the first time I cooked the rice or what you called "sinaing" the bigas got burnt since I forgot to put water on it lol!

I know some filipino dish. Because that's what I always prepared at home. I really like cooking that has a sauce. But I can also do some other meals. So it depends on my mood. I could say that I am not being too dependent with my parents when it comes to cooking. They can leave me in the kitchen and do the cooking thing.

I started cooking when I was 13. The first dish I learned is steamed rice. I don't think it is an obligation but it is just something natural for you to learn when you get at that age in my household. Since I learned young, I got more experimental with the dishes. When I was starting, the food I cook sometimes is not edible. Now that I'm 26 I am very confident and able in working at the kitchen.
• Pasay, Philippines
6 May 10
Oh we are same age as of now. At times I also experienced cooking that is not edible or even at times I totally fail that others can't eat it but we learn from it especially on what kind of experiment that we can do next time.

True. You learn by experience and practice makes perfect. Goodluck cooking! It's a nice activity you can do with the whole family. Actually I think if you're cooking for people, you actually become better because you get a feedback. Just shrug off the negative feedback and just keep cooking. Because when the positive feedback comes, you'd really feel rewarded and it inspires you more on becoming a better cook and trying a different dish.

I am a very basic cook and dont really like to cook as I havent had much experiences of cooking. When it comes to meal ideas, I have no imagination at all but am hoping to learn more meal ideas in time for when my child can eat so that I can encourage him to cook.

I learned to cook, since I was a kid. I was always taught by my mother to cook. I first learned to cook rice and then cook a simple meal. I am very fortunate, my mother taught me to cook since I was a child. so I am accustomed to cooking. after I got married I was not confused anymore to learn cooking.

In my case actually I was never taught by someone not even my mother but because I was just inspired from the recipe book until the point that my Mom even told me that I should cook the usual meals not from the book.

I have been cooking since I could stand on a box by the stove. We didn't have a choice but to learn. If we didn't, just say it wasn't healthy for us. With that I learned many ways to cook different things. My kids think I am crazy when I come up with odd things to do with food, thing is when it is all done and gone, you know it was GOOD.. My age was I would have to say about 4 years old.

I learned how to cook at a pretty early age and it was mostly out of necessity. I was the early riser, up before anybody else in the household, so I learned how to cook breakfast before anything else. I'll date myself a little and say that my interest in cooking anything other than breakfast food was sparked by watching Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet on TV. He made cooking look interesting and fun which made me want to learn how to cook some of the dishes he made on the show and also learn basic cooking skills. As I got a little older, I realized that having the knowledge and skills helped make me self-sufficient, which is something I have always aspired to. It was also much appreciated by my friends on camping and hunting trips. I still enjoy cooking and have several "signature" dishes that my friends and family want me to make all the time. I also passed on my cooking knowledge to my son, who is now in college. He rooms with 3 other guys and says that he is the only one that knows how to cook. He tells me funny stories of what the others do in the kitchen and says he has saved them from gastronomic disaster more than a few times. It gives me a little satisfaction knowing he is making use of the skills I taught him.

What do you mean by gastronomic disasters? Is that all about the gas stoves? I am thinking if that is also something to do with stomach that is also called a gurd

I think the first time I help my mom making cake at age 7. We made traditional coconut cake with glutionus rice flour. We made that every time we got family gathering and its our family tradition. The next meal I can make at that age is scramble egg and make instant noodle.

I learn how to cook since i was in age of 9. During that time i only know how to fried egg and cook some noodle. But now, can cook a lot of stuff. Actually is quite fun if you really know how to cook. If you like to eat delicious food, try to cook yourself and see!!!

I totally agree with you since you can also experiment in cooking if ever you are not satisfied on what is given on a recipe. You could have an idea on how to add some spices to make it so delicious.
