hello there, Literally it means....the sentence is talking about Nancy,wherein If she doesn't exist or she's not around then the person who wrote this cannot do anything worthwhile or cannot do anything that is worthy..I believe it is an excerpt from a known book SILAS WARNER by George Elliot,story was also been played in theater arts.
