Suddenly this doubt came into my mind. Why should have an umbrella invented for? To safe guard against rain or Sunshine? No doubt, Umbrellas are used a lot in rainy days. Yet, some things are invented for one thing and used for a different thing. So, what is your assumption of the invention of an Umbrella? Some old people use it as a walking stick too.

I think it was invented for both. Thin umbrellas were used to shield ladies from the sun. And regular umbrellas are for the rain.

To prevent the rain from touching your skin, so you won't get wet when rain. Who like to get wet anyway? 7 years old boy?

cane and a chair - a walking stick that can be converted as a chair. cool
an umbrella used as a walking stick has two purpose already. it serves as a walking stick and if it rains you can use it also not to get wet, or sometimes use it to poke someone har har har. well there are a lot of things invented already that has used in different things. like there is already a walking stick that can be converted as a chair. in other countries they have umbrellas for a sunny day and they use a different umbrella when it rains. when i was younger the only umbrella i see are the black ones, now it comes already in different colors, and in different sizes.
