Are my discussions lengthy?

India
August 2, 2010 4:23am CST
Friends today I was talking to a friend over phone. He is in mylot before I became a member. He is an ex-student of mine. I like his discussions very much. He says now a days, discussions here are getting generic, just put anything, you get responses. Well I too observe this and feel what the need of doing so much of labor is, if nobody has time to read them. But the basic teacher in me does not agree. It says; let’s share our knowledge, experience here rather than asking, which fruit you it, do you drink coffee or milk etc etc. So what is your view, please guide me, thanks in advance. Do you read the discussion or just read the title and respond? Professor

If the subject requires elaborate explanation, then there is nothing wrong in putting a lengthy discussion as the matter is to be understood properly to respond back.

I read discussions even if they are lengthy. I myself would admit that sometimes I think of posting short discussions because people might not read them if they are too lengthy, but I can't help but write everything I want to if I start typing my on discussion. One of the mylotters actually commented on my first discussions, 3 years ago, that my discussion was the longest one he had ever read. Well that was because when I joined mylot, it was intended as an outlet. I was so sad that time. And I don't think short discussions would be enough to release all of my emotions. hehehe. be blessed! :)

My Dear Professor friend- Your discussions all have the three main rules of writing in use. They are; Immediate, precise, encapsulated, titles. The reader can make a decision whether or not to read on. Second one; the body explains in detail what you are addressing specifically. No questions need to be asked about for clarification. Third is; There is never any repetition or restatement of another point! This, my friend, coupled with the rule of the best seller book lists - an avid reader knows their authors, is why you continue to remain on my virtual "friend" list. Write on!

A friend in yesteryear was a person you actually have met. You know them through actual experiences together. Going to work, the big game, you know their family and friends and have birthdays, and holidays with them. You go on vacation with them. A virtual friend is someone you know without ever meeting them in person. You can communicate with them online or through written letter but that's it. Case in point: I recommended a web site on a social networking site (something we can't do here because our conversation is edited to both virtual friends, neighbors and friends I made through past jobs, etc. I was asked by a friend while on a trip with her that saw this recommendation what it was all about. She wanted to talk directly to the source, ME.

Yes you are right. The post here should be something to discuss. I had join one site where I enjoy most, why because the discussion of one topic never end. In that site I found a new friends. One day we decide a meet up. We laugh, we chat, we drink, we eat. That day is so fun. All of us are strangers, but became friends because of single post that caught our attentions.

As for myself if I do not find something worthy to say I just choose not to make a comment. I believe that a good discussion is better than a series of senseless one-line sentences made just for the sake of having one comment counted as participation. Being in mylot is not only for earning money, here i find people with whom i get to share my views with, and sometimes i even get logical advices that i benefit from.

those kinds of discussions are considered "polls" and will be taken down I like to tell stories, be they of my life, my cats or my silly dreams... I avoid those discussions that might be seen as too controversial, because I don't need the stress, and I don't bother with ones I don't know much about or of things I have no interest I did discover something new about one of my longtime friends, that they were male and I had thought they were female, because one of the topics they are always talking about are subject lines on soap operas...

If you just read the title and respond, you may end up saying the wrong thing. Many people here, myself included, tend to put up "trick titles" that don't directly have anything to do with the topic of the discussion. Your discussions are fine in my opinion...

Long discussions are fine provided they are relevant and helpful. For me it is okay to post lengthy discussions for as long as readers will learn from it. I think your discussions are good so never mind about the length.

I don't think any discussion is lengthy unless the topic is silly or something of that kind. You have great discussions coming in, so it better be that way, hehe .. Long discussions also tend to receive long replies. BTW professor, i just checked your profile. You are from Sambhalpur, well, this weekend i and my friends were at your place. We had a very nice time at the Gudguda waterfalls!

It takes me longer to respond to discussions than it takes most people because of the fact that I do take the time to read the discussion at hand and to really think about what I would like to say in my response. I do think that there are a lot of people that only read the title and respond to the discussion and that is the reason that there are a lot of cases where the responses that you will get to a discussion are quite generic. I personally like learning from the experiences of others and that is the main reason that I will read everything.

I guess thats what makes myLot interesting. The criteria for a good discussion is never fixed. You'd never know what would make for a good discussion, and what would elicit a lot of responses. As for me, I try to make the title of of my discussions serve its purpose. Which is catch the attention of would-be responders, and then let the body of the discussion demonstrate and generate the interest.

Hello Proffesor!. To be honest I find out your discussion very lengthy and your response back sometimes so short and give no room for further discussion. I enjoy it when I have times and in good mood nut I only answer to the think I understand to answer. Your discussion give a difference color, keep on making one.

I had a long absence from mylot, so I can not state if I think your's are lengthy or not.. But I can state.. It does not matter the length as long as you do your best, and try to make it the best quality. What, I am finding is most are just using this sort of like a questions and answers session instead of as a topic and discussion... It is hard to start real good topics, and discussions at times, especially when hunting for things not previously discussed. Just, do your best. :) . That is what I try to do.

Hello Professor, I tend to read longer discussions, but often don't answer them because I don't feel I have anything worthwhile to offer. However, while I'm in Australia, my Internet is on an expensive pre-paid usb connection, so often now I only scan long discussions, which I must admit include many of yours. Sorry!

Hi, Prof.;-) The length of the discussion doesn't bother me at all and I don't respond to any discussion without reading the whole text. Sometimes, the title could be deceiving, what it says is different from what it really meant. I'm glad to respond to your discussion whenever there is one I can relate to or has something to say/add but if not, then, even if i have read the full length, I don't respond at all. Why? It is because I don't want to just say anything just for the sake of responding. It is a great factor that I know you are a professor. There's somewhat an undeniable respect that I believe is due to you and therefore must reflect to the response we give to your discussion. Have a great day, Prof. Stay posting the way you always do.;-)

If the subject doesn't appeal to my interests I skip it. I do read the discussion and have noticed many people just randomly write anything sometimes. It looks like a different conversation entirely. Sometimes when I ask something (Start a new discussion) some people will just read the title which isn't helpful at all. I started in here for the opportunity to make money, Ended up just doing it for fun. Have a great day!

I think that it is very important to read the discussion that is posted. You could read the title and respond to it, and not realize that your response is completely different than what the actual discussion was about. I think that it is really more about replying to the discussion just to make the money, which is wrong.
