Are you willing to pay bigger taxes for better government services

This crossed my mind. I wonder if we filipinos are willing to pay bigger taxes for better services from the government. Services concerning not only public services such as roads, police and fire protection but such as health care and retirement. In some countries people pay a huge amount of tax but the have free health care subsidized by the government. This is also inclusive of medicines. I am not talking about second rate services but top of the line medical services. There are also countries where there retirement or in our case our sss is much larger and thus we can enjoy our retirement better compared to the situation of our country right now. Education in those countries are also much better and are subsidized by the government. If taxes were higher the only dilemma will be the people who will be handling the money in the government. I guess this has also been a big problem in our country. What is your opinion about this?

Actually, with the amount of money that the government already has or had, I am not really sure if they still have it or they have already spent it, should be enough to see such better government services but, as we can all see and as most poor people really feel, such changes aren't really that apparent. If proper management of funds were just implemented, I can perhaps say that the services that the government would provide would be much better if people pay more taxes yet, that's not happening any time soon. Like simple logic, the more you pay, the better things you get. That's how its suppose to be but, if the transaction itself is quite questionable, I think most people would rather see and feel the changes first before they can start trusting the government on managing the funds that they could use to better provide service to their citizens.

Yes, as hard as it is, trust is really hard to earn as it is really easy to lose. We need to see evidence or proof and not just mere flowery words. Indeed, the corrupt ones are just the minority that ironically have a dominant influence and power which for the honest majority are unable to compete against. That's what power gives to most people in office, you can either use that power to do good to the people who have placed you in that office or be selfish and take advantage of such opportunity as long as you are still in office. It has been like that since the Spanish colonization anyway. For everyone to be convinced, perhaps if the government would show transparency to its citizens about its transactions and operations, how the funds are collected, used, managed and so on. They are public officials so, their duties and responsibilities to the people should also be publicly known?

I guess this is one trait we Filipinos have in common. We have to see results before we trust someone. Is it really that hard to trust our fellowmen? In my opinion I still believe that their are more honest Filipinos than corrupt Filipinos. We just have to believe in that so that we can solve the problem of corruption in our country. If we could only realize that they are only the minority then we wouldn't have the mentality of "if you can't beat them join them".

I think the Filipinos would be willing enough to pay more or bigger taxes IF AND ONLY IF, they can see where their taxes are going. IF there are corrupt government officials being punished for their crimes. IF well known medical institutions would admit ordinary people to have top-notch medical care. IF poverty would be eradicated. IF there is dignity of work whether you are a trash collector, jeepney driver, and the likes. IF the intellectuals and workers would be able to see that they are in a symbiotic relationship. IF justice can prove that it is swift. But in light of the present state of governance, tax raising is only implementable, along with its benefits for the Filipinos, in Fantasy Island.

Very well said! All are not impossible, in Fantasy Land. More tax would then be more temptation from the corrupt local government officials! Thank you so much for this nice response.

I really think that fighting corruption lies within us all. As citizens we should be vigilant in exposing those government officials who are corrupt. We should also sacrifice and follow rules and the law. Its one thing to say that you want change but its another thing to practice it. It just frustrate me to see people disobeying simple rules such as jaywalking and beating the red light. If we Filipinos want change we should start it with ourselves.

We all would love lesser taxes to pay, but it would be much better to see that the taxes we pay, despite how big they are, are put to good use, not used by corrupt officials for their own good.

Well said Theresaaiza. I wouldn't mind paying 50% income tax if I wouldn't have to worry about hospital bills, retirement, crime, better public services and infrastructures, the best education for free, and a better standard of living for the majority of Filipinos. I wouldn't even mind paying 60% of my income as taxes as long as poverty is solved in our country and our standard of living is above than most of the other countries.

what choices do i have, if we don't how can we have a job or maintain our business. reluctantly, i would say yes, but if there was a choice, i'd rather not because of corruption that is obviously rampant here and there. i still believe that proper transparency can eliminate corruption and thus, having a better government services than giving higher tax rates.

Solving the problem of corruption will always be up to the people. We can only solve the problem of corruption if we ourselves change our thinking. We should be keen in exposing corrupt officials through the media and use what we have at our disposal. Camera phones, the internet and the media. Quoting the slogan of TV Patrol, "Ikaw ang simula"

Well... I would. Imagine 12% of your tax goes to waste and imagine 15% tax goes to better living. Isn't that neat? but Better living leads to a better life. Better life leads to high income. High income leads to taxes. Taxes go to Government. Government leads to better living... So pretty much if they'd do that, Philippines could be the greatest country ever!

That is exactly what I wish would happen to our country. That is why I wouldn't mind paying a huge part of my income to tax so long as I see the benefits it has to our country and the increase of the standard of living here in the Philippines.

Paying bigger taxes doesn't guarantee a better government services. For that to happen there should be a total revamp of the government system. As we all know, corruption is very rampant in the Philippines that even from the lowest position in the government thinks only of gaining something, money if I may say so. Though not all but majority of those in the government services are like that. It would be beneficial for every Filipino if this will be implemented in the Philippines.

So if the majority government were to be more credible and honest then would you be willing to pay more taxes for more benefits from the government, better services and a higher standard of living?

no, not anymore. in my 9 years of work experience, i'd say that i have already given far more than is required of a good citizen, my food have VAT, my toll have VAT, those that i buy from groceries, all have VAT! my salary, before they even get to my savings account, the tax has already been deducted - even before i can contest what the computation was - i am rendered helpless in this case already! and my savings - its earning has tax --- and these 8 years i have not seen any improvements, all i see are the worse roads, silly and useless policemen, lousy government employees who are already angry before you could even open your mouth!! no way they are going to put more burden to me - no way should we allow the government to tax us again and again! my take home pay is not decent anymore.. 30% of income tax is far more than what we could handle!!!

I guess if I had the same bad experience with government employees and services then I would definitely have the same reaction as you chiyosan. In my experience though there are still government employees who are properly serving and doing their jobs. Although they receive a very low salary they still maintain a good and honest service to the public. We shouldn't let the few ruin the image of the whole system.

The answer from me is no. The reason is very simple. Currently the tax collection in India is only around 50-60% of actual taxes. That means the Income Tax department does not collect the taxes from all of the 100% people from whom tax can be collected. If they do that, then their collection would nearly double. Also, given the fact that currently we do not end up using the entire kitty of the collected taxes, more taxes will not help!! In the last year alone states did not use more than 50% of the healthcare spending kitty which was available to them!! Given this how will paying bigger taxes help!! Cheers! Ram

with eyes closed i can say yes, but like you said... is there any guarantee that our country will be a better one if the taxes are bigger. i am from marikina and taxes here are high. even if you just have a sari sari store you need to have a license to operate and this taxes are use to beautify the city. we have a clean and very progress city. if the whole philippines will progress why not. this is what we are all been waiting for. but if taxes will get bigger then we are still poor then there is no sense at all.

Yes I have to agree with you on that but we should also take the risk in trusting our government officials. Beside democracy is power of the people. If things won't turn out right we citizen can always change our officials so long as we don't give in to vote buying and popularity contest.

I think the taxes is not proportional to government services, so if let me pay very bigger taxes for little better government services, I do not accept this way.

I guess we can have the "better" or even the best government services with the taxes we are paying right now, only if the government officials know how to make wise use of the taxes. The taxes should be allocated properly where the good of most people is recognized. I am a Nurse and I can't afford to pay bigger than what I am paying right now. I think 1/5 of my income only goes to taxes.

Yes, Every time I look at my payslip I always wonder what are the results of my tax but if you compare it to other countries. Our tax is relatively small compared to the taxes abroad. That is why they have so many subsidized benefits from their government.

Not a problem with me. If they can erase corruption, why not? But if there's corruption, no matter how much tax they collect we won's see any improvement instead we would see more mansions, more SUV in the streets which belongs to who else but the politicians.

I clearly do not agree to raise the percentage of the present tax that we have right now here in the Philippines. It has already been carefully planned before it was imposed from 10% to 12%. We are not only being deducted this certain amount automatically from our salaries but we pay the taxes also from the things that we purchase. This is already enough for us. The problem why we are not having good services back from the government is because of the corruption that is ongoing here. And WE ARE CLEARLY AWARE OF THAT. It will also be unfair that we will be paying more tax if some large companies are tax evaders. There are some tax exemption that they just enjoy because they know how to manipulate the legalities of it and they know to to get away with it. So there should really be no tax increase then!

I wouldn't agree on companies evading taxes, I still believe that there are still more companies paying the right amount of taxes then those who aren't. Maybe these companies are avoiding taxes legally but that isn't illegal. Evading is illegal and I think if taxes were to be increased then the collection of taxes should also be more stringent in order for the increase to be beneficial to the country.

Thank you for the comment. If you are aware that the US has already released some funds to help the current administration for these concerns. USA has released more than $400 Million to help the Philippines. This is the fund that the previous administration was waiting for two years ago but not granted because of trust issues. It is also indicated that some percentage will just be solely for the upgrading the Bureau of Internal Revenue. So I think that the stringent part of collecting taxes that you were referring would then be solved there. The main problem that the country will have is a strict compliance with the US rules to spend that money given to us. It should really not be put into waste because instead of helping out their fellow country men with that big amount of money, they have helped our country instead. The spending should be very transparent in order for us to see that there would be no corruption. I hope we are all aware of that help given to us. There would be no need for us to have a VAT increase by now. Thank you.

Obviously not. Although I am really in need of a better government service, I don't think we should gain such a BETTER service by paying bigger taxes. If we can't enjoy good government services, it is obvious that it is the fault of our government. Yes, they really need to take some relevant measures to improve their service level to a better one. If they don't want to provide better government services, even if we have paid bigger taxes, we can't gain nothing at last, which is an unarguable fact in our society.

Increasing taxes is actually beneficial to the lower and working class. It would be disadvantageous to the rich since the higher your income the higher you pay for your tax. Increasing taxes is one way of spreading the wealth of the rich in the country.

I wouldn't mind paying higher taxes as long as we are benefiting from the services provided by the government. But as of now, many can't hardly make both ends meet much less pay their taxes. Hoping to see change with our new government.

I heard from alot of my friends who happened working in another country like Norway, Denmark, USA, etc. they say said that they paid big taxes every month. People are not complaining about this because the benefits they received also from the government bigger and they are contented with the service. If our country will imposed like this way of collecting taxes I will pay specially the new government we have today. But we must not spoiled our local officials also maybe it will happened again that all our taxes will go to the private pocket. Hope our new elected officials will change and make our country improved as well as the people living.

We are already paying high taxes but still there's no improvement in our country. Lots of problems still arises especially poverty. I am willing to pay if i know that it will go to those who are really in need. But as we can see in our country, its useless to pay high taxes because of our corrupt government officials. The fruits of our labor will just be wasted. I'm still hoping that our new governance will solve this kind of problem.

We have so many taxes already. The problem in our government is the implementation and collection. The BIR is not doing their job. Most Filipinos are not paying their taxes.
