It's Official..The Inland Revenue Don't Know What They're Doing

I don't know what the equivalent of the Inland Revenue is in your country but think "TAX" and you get my drift, right? Well, John had been receiving Working Tax Credits because he had been made redundant, then went to another job after 4 months but I didn't have a job, so he was entitled to claim for these Credits because of that. He got them in 2008 and 2009 but hadn't got round to filling in the latest form and sending it off because he knew (deep down) that he wasn't entitled to them this year as they only last so many weeks. Anyway, what did he get through the post (and I did too) a bill from the Inland Revenue telling US that WE owed THEM £600, which is money they now say they have overpaid us! Incredible isn't it? We fill the forms in honestly, send them off, they return them because they are wrongly filled in, we fill them in again..then they tell John he is entitled to the money. So why (after all that) do they now want it all back after 2 years? Apparently, he isn't the only person this has happened to so I reckon it's been yet another "administrative error" by the Inland Revenue. Last year he was sent a bill for £1200 that was sent "in error" and I wish they wouldn't do this because it worries us until we can sort it out via telephone (they were "busy" today), no doubt dealing with irate people like ourselves. Thank God Carlisle won to put the smiles back on our faces! Do you get strange bills like ours that you don't even owe?

I'm not sure what you are talking about but it sounds like what we call an unemployment compensation. If it is anything like this, it happens often in the USA. And you have to pay them back, they claim they don't make mistakes. It doesn't last a year and only pays $250 a week, so you better take any job you can find or lose everything you have worked for all those years. I laugh when I hear some of their excuses like " it was a computer error" when we all know what comes out is what was entered into the data. A Computer can't make mistakes,it's a machine, it's the humans who enters the data that make the mistakes. Yes, we get some strange bills sometimes but not often, thank God.

Thanks for your response, it's much appreciated. Well, we finally got through to the Inland Revenue on the telephone today and you know what they said? "Don't worry about it..the letters were sent automatically to all those who havne't yet filled their forms in." No doubt another form will come and I've told John to fill it in this time and send it off IMMEDIATELY lol.
