Fostering rabbits

My girlfriend is currently fostering two young rabbits through a local rescue. In a few months they'll be old enough to spay/neuter (they're small enough we can't tell yet if they're male or female yet) and adopt out to new homes. We've had rabbits in the past, but this is a nice way to help a good cause AND have bunnies for a couple months. Have you ever fostered rabbits? Some other pet? I'd love to hear your experiences. :) These two are pretty darn adorable and becoming more sociable by the day, and it's only been a week!

Yes, my fiance and I fostered a bunny while I was living with him in Oregon. The shelter only deals with rabbits, and unfortunately almost all of them had caught a respiratory infection, so we helped to get him back to good health. When I moved back to Canada, my fiance continued to foster rabbits, and had two more that he looked after and brought back to good health. I would love to foster another rabbit, in part to keep my companion bunny company, however there is nowhere around here that offers such a thing.

How funny, we're located in Oregon as well. :) My girlfriend is fostering through Rabbit Advocates, was that the group you dealt with? They're very reputable and were in need of volunteers, thus how she ended up with the buns. I have a bunny as well, but he's quite a loner...he does live in a room full of birds, though, so perhaps they're enough activity for him to stay stimulated (both he and the birds are free to roam/fly around the room as they please).

I found out about the group through craigslist actually, it's name is the Red Barn Rabbit Rescue. They have a lot of bunnies in need of care, so it was nice that we were able to look after some of them. If you go here - www.redbarnrabbitrescue.org/adoptables.html - Dirty Harry and Buzz were the ones we looked after :) My bun has never been around others so I don't know if he's a loner or not, but he absolutely loves being pet, and attention in general, so I think he'd enjoy company.

Hi Catkin, I bet those little bunnies are adorable! No, I've never fostered anything from a shelter. Don't know if my local shelter does that. I haven't heard that they do it. I did take care of a pigeon (that had a broken wing) for a friend who went away for three weeks. It was not really a pleasant experience. Pigeons in a large cardboard box have a really strong odor to say the least : )

They are pretty darn adorable, and getting noticeably bigger already! I know the Oregon Humane Society does fostering, but these guys are some of the many rabbits with Rabbit Advocates, a good local group and part of the House Rabbit Society. Oh boy...birds, especially injured ones, can be tough when you only have them for a short time. Do you know if the pigeon ended up healing alright while with your friend? We once had a very tame pigeon while living in an apartment...she wasn't the brightest bird, but was very sweet and loved taking baths in our dog's water dish. She had been brought to us after a friend had the unnerving experience of said pigeon landing on her head out of the blue and refusing to fly away. We think she was probably raised by someone, then released as a young adult. She ended up being re-released by us during the breeding season and joined a local flock.
