Today is World Teacher's Day. We all have a favorite teacher when we were in the elementary grades and in high school. I have one particular teacher in Grade 3 that I cannot forget. She taught intelligently, and taught English. One time, she asked me to read a story in front of the class. As I was reading along, I came across the word tooth ache. It was my first time to be introduced to the word 'ache' which I pronounced as 'at-che'. The class laughed but she did not and told me the right pronunciation and lectured that we don't have to laugh at the mistake of others. Do you have a particular teacher that you liked best?

I had teachers that I absolutely loved.. and I've had teachers that I hated that gave me a hard time... I guess the best way is to break it down easiest. Teachers I Loved Mrs. Moss - 3rd grade teacher in elementary school Ms. Majors - Latin teacher in middle and high school Mrs. Hitt - 9th grade English teacher in high school Mr. Sexton - Symphony orchestra teacher in middle and high school Professor McNelly - Advanced English Composition professor in college Teaches I HATED Mrs. Barksdale - 7th grade Keyboarding teacher in middle school Mrs. Bass - Middle school Assistant principal Mr. Martin - High school Assistant principal Ms. Berry - 7th grade Science teacher in middle school Mrs. Alexander - 7th grade English teacher in middle school Mrs. Hovatter - 11th grade U.S. History teacher in high school I guess now that I am reflecting back... I hated more teachers than I liked lol. And according to my chart I've so nicely listed here... the 7th grade must've been absolutely HORRIBLE for me haha!!

I cannot even imagine. But, for me, there are REASONS why I dislike these people.. I just don't like them just not to like them. I didn't like Mrs. Barksdale because she was mean. I've been into computers since I was a kid.. so learning to type was nothing for me. While everyone was sitting and doing work, I was done already.. and practicing keystrokes or something. Nothing that wasn't constructive.. like playing games or anything. I just wasn't doing what everyone else was doing. And one day she decided to "snap" on me in the class saying that what I was typing was garbage. She wrote me a referral to the office!! I hated her ever since and eventually switched from her class to Mrs. Napier and Mrs. DeAndrea's classes. I couldn't stand Mrs. Bass, the assistant principal because she took her position way too seriously. Not only was she evil towards students, but to teachers as well. She was like that evil lady that was the principal on the movie "Matilda".. she was horrible. Also, she pinned a fake bun to the back of her head everyday because she was baldheaded and she had a moustache!! She was disgusting.. I didn't like Mr. Martin (my assistant Principal in HS) because he was kind of the same way. He took his position way too seriously.. bullying his way through school and having to have his input in everything. Especially because he had two brothers that worked at the school, one being the main principal and other being a teacher/basketball coach at the school. Oh! Was he bullheaded... until he got sick. We all thought and heard rumors that he had had the AIDS... and some students put sugar in his gas tank one year so that his car wouldn't crank because everyone hated him. If you got into trouble and was sent to his office... FOR ANYTHING... you knew you were getting suspended from school and would be home for a few days.. And.. Ms. Berry... o why.. the craziest example of them all. This lady was mentally challenged. I don't understand how she attained a teaching license for the state of Virginia. She taught my 7th grade Biology class. She was a manic depressive that always was sad and telling us how much she missed her boyfriend, whom we found out to be a man that she was never with.. just was obsessed over. She was one of the teachers that allowed the start of the "sniffing koolaid" epidemic that hit the public schools in our area. These fools would sit and sniff cherry-flavored koolaid and she'd just watch.. not say anything. Also... the day I REALLY found out she was crazy... she said she was hungry and had missed breakfast. She left us in the class unattended without telling anyone where she was going and came back with two hotplates I guess she had stashed in her car or maybe she stole from the teacher's lounge?? Who knows?? And she had raw chicken.. I will never forget... she floured the chicken and put it on the hotplates and FRIED CHICKEN IN THE CLASS!!! I had never witnessed anything so reckless in my life. I don't know where she is now. We prank called her house for a few months and I never seen or heard from her again. I'm glad because I don't fool with crazies lol.

I thought my comment would be too big so I started another one lol.. Anywho.. I don't like Mrs. Alexander because she was the first teacher to literally boss us around and make us do things that we didn't want to do... unnecessarily. For example.. when switching classes.. we would all line up outside of our next class whatever it may be and then file in after all of the previous students file out. Well, this particular day.. I forgot my bookbag at home.. so I was carrying my books freely in my arms but they were heavy.. so I stuck my inkpen in my mouth to carry them because common sense says that they will roll off the books if I were to put them on top. So I reach the entrance to my Advanced English class and my teacher stops me at the door. She says to me, "You need to remove that pen from your mouth." And I was like, "Why?" And she simply and awkwardly stated "Because I said so." like I was her child or someone she could tell what to do or control. If she would've asked me nicely then maybe but by this point I am heated because not only is she blocking the door.. but the books are getting heavier by the second. I simply spit my pen on the top of my books and told her "No, you cannot tell me what to do. YOU AIN'T MY MAMA!" And I know that really got her mad because she's an English teacher and I was one of her best students so she knows that my grammar is virtually flawless. Sooo.. she just looks on and says nothing. She waits until everyone files into the classroom, sits down, settles down and quiets down. After that, she called me out.. she says, "LaLa, what did you say to me outside the class before you walked in??" And I reiterated without fear clearly across the classroom so that I wouldn't have to get up or anything from my designated desk lol. "I said... when you told me to take the pen out of my mouth that you won't my mama.." Then, some stupid girl nearby tried to instigate it by laughing and saying "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!" I guess that pissed Mrs. Alexander off even further. She grabbed a referral and made it out saying that I disrespected her outside of the classroom and furtherly went to embarrass and demean her in front of the class. I was upset. I got up and she gave it to me and I held up until I hit the hallway.. then tears filled my eyes because I felt like I had did nothing wrong... Back then we still had payphones in our schools, so on the way to the office to take my referral and see the principal.. I called to my grandma's house and told her what had happened and that I didn't want to stay in school the whole day and to come pick me up. She said ok after lecturing me about what I said.. and then I proceeded to the office where I got in trouble with an action plan and a day of ISS (In School Suspension) and afterwards was told to return to class. I didn't really want to go back so I dilly dallyed around in the hall for a long time... went into the bathroom.. went to my locker.. things like that. Then.. I went back to class like 10 minutes later.. she let me back in class while everybody was looking at me all crazy and I sat down like nothing had happened. She continued teaching about whatever she was saying and a few minutes later, the class phone rang from the office. She answered it and it was the secretary in the office saying that someone had come to check me out. I sensed that she was mad again but I didn't care.. I was happy to be going home. Before I could even get my stuff together and leave the class, she asked me who was coming to pick me up.. and I was like somebody in my family. I really didn't want to say anything to her stupid self.. but I tried to be respectful none the least. She, then, asked me how did they know to come pick me up..?? And I told her that I had called them.. She asked me how did I call them and from where?? And I said, "From the payphone in the hall".. that's where she got me. I should have just walked out and ignored her and chanced getting written up again. She asked, "Who wrote you a hall pass to the payphone?? Did I write you one??" I said.. "No one and nobody and no, not you. I was already in the hall.."... Don't y'all know.. she wrote me up again!!! For not having a hall pass LOL She was a real character.

There's nothing wrong with a little elaboration. I know what the discussion is about... which is why I responded the way I did in my INITIAL response.

I have a teacher who made a really big impact on me. She was my Home Education teacher in elementary and was single. Most people called her a terror teacher and attributed it to her being unmarried. As I was still in elementary, I steered clear of her until one time,I just lost in a school wide contest where everyone expected me to win. I was depressed and I was washing the dishes quietly in one corner when she approached me. She asked if I did my best and I just nodded. She said that was the only thing that anyone could ever ask. I was always hard on myself before, expecting a lot and that was the first time that I gave myself a break. I think that I became a better person because of this principle.

how ironic that those teachers who are known as 'terror' made sense than the others.

My favorite teacher of all time was my first grade teacher, Mrs. Jamilo. She was very welcoming on the first day of school, and I learned so many things from her. With her I learned how to read and write, add and subtract. When I dipped into a little bit of teaching for extra credits in college, that's when I realized that the most important lesson I've learned from her is patience. I will forever remember and be grateful for the lessons, Ma'am!

I remember my adviser when I was in high school. I was having problems with my classmates and I always felt left out in those days. One day, i got into an issue with another classmate and my adviser sought me out to help me overcame my problem. she gave me advice (though I had trouble listening since I was too busy sulking). I always appreciated that moment when she related my experience with hers. I really felt that we connected. Up to this day, I try to remember her words and visit her whenever possible.

Actually my 2 favorite teachers never taught me in school but in life. My Aunt and my dad were both great teachers by profession. My Aunt lived with us a good part of my growing up years and was more like a big sister than an aunt to me. Both of them took time to teach me in math and english etc when I needed the extra help. They were encouraging and taught me the importance of education. But more than that, they taught me through example how to be a good person, honest and fair. They were amazing people that inspired their students and others. Years after my aunt retired from teaching, a young woman who had her in 8th grade wrote an article about her. She recalled how many times my aunt had inspired her to do well in school and life. She recalled all the time my aunt devoted to students in extra curricular activities. And then she told of the story of when the school was having a formal dance. She wanted to go but her family could not afford to buy her a nice dress. My aunt who was also a part-time model took one of her designer gowns and had it altered to fit this girl and gave it to her. I can't tell you how often students of both my dad and my aunt approached me and told me how very lucky I was to have them full-time in my life. I really was.

When I was in the sixth grade Mrs. Forester was my English teacher. I remember that she used to give the class weekly spelling tests (from what I can remember, we would get a group of 20 words at the beginning of the week and have the spelling test on a Friday) Anyway, one of our assignments was to write a short story using all 20 words. It was an enjoyable task and she always praised my stories and the creativity within them. She even encouraged me a few times to continue with my writing. I think my love for writing began to flourish then, thanks to Mrs. Forester. I always wondered what happened to her. If I ever had the chance to meet her again, I would thank her for encouraging me and for being such a good teacher.

Oh yes I remember I was 8 years old. We use to get put in a certain classroom and forced, as the other students use to mock to watch old films. One that never got old was the Martin Luther King's film. All the children use to laugh at me as I was always so intrigued by the film. I use to cry and my teacher would come over to me and comfort me. See I did not have family I was a kid in the foster system and his words use to fall deep in my soul. My teacher use to tell me do not let anyone stand in you way. She said you see that black man on the screen he never let anyone's words stand in his way. Well the kids made fun because I was not black so they thought it was odd that a Puerto Rican girl would believe in him. My teacher use to hold me after class and she explained to me that people would always mock others due to their ignorance. She stuck in my mind and to this day I remember her wonderful words and have lived by Martin Luther Kings speeches.7 I have no idea what her name is to date but remember her as if it were yesterday. Such a wonderful and caring person. I wish all teachers were like her as she was so inspiring.

I have a few teachers that are memorable for me while growing up. Well, I'll just share one. She was an English teacher in high school and she's really good and her ways are effective in teaching us. She tries to bring out the best in everyone and she pretty much started my interest in books and reading. I used to just read a book with lots of summaries for novels but when she was my teacher i started reading real novels. she acknowledges someone if they did good. though when she acknowledged me once, i somehow blew it on the next big exam. lol.
