Are you saving for "rainy days"?

I just wanted to know if you do, how do you do it? I have been most of the time, an impulse buyer. Most of the time, I buy things I do not need. Just the thought of "having money" to buy, I easily fall prey in buying things I do not have plans of buying. I may have few savings now. I am just thinking that maybe, if I opted to save the amount instead of buying things I do not need, I could have saved money enough to buy another new car! What about you, my fellow myLotters? Can you give us more tips in saving money?

If you enjoy buying things, here's a tip to help you decide whether it's a wise purchase. When you see something, make yourself wait three days before buying it. Tell yourself that you can have it, but you have to wait. Within three days you might have forgotten all about it or it will take too much effort to go back to the store and find the item. Also, to save money, pay yourself first. That is, take a certain amount (5 or 10 percent or whatever you feel comfortable with) and put it into a savings account where it's hard to get at. If you use an online savings account like Ingdirect or Ally, it takes a few days to get the money back, so you'll have time to think things over before spending it.

That's a good one peavey!;) You are right! To allot three days before buying an item. Paying myself first is one great option too!;)

Hello Johnmike! I have savings! I contribute to that amount every month. You ask how?? Well every time i get my salary, my father comes and take a part of it..He leaves me enought to eat, pay some bills, get a cloth or two. He decided that this is a must because i was spending to much. If something important comes arround, like going to the doctor, having problems with this or that, he gives me the money i need. OF course if i tell him i sow a very nice bag he just ignores me :D I'm OK with this because i know myself well enough to se ethat when i have money, i spend them arround and i can not show on what i spend :D

Hi Johnmike! It's good that you are thinking about saving, the next thing is actually doing it, lol. It's hard but you can do it. Discipline is the key. My rule is I pay myself first. Meaning on my salary half of it will go to my savings I actually just maintain enough for a rainy day and the rest I invest, that way I earn more and the other half are for bills. Try it so you can save and buy a nice car!

I don't have any better tip on how to save money for rainy days as I haven't done much saving so far either. I was just like you few years back, I would spend money on something that I fancied but I don't actually need. Now how i regret it, I kept telling myself that I did save those money instead, then I could also buy a car nowadays. What I'm trying to do at the moment is I try to separate a bit of the money I make every month and keep them in separate account and try to never use it. I have stopped buying unnecessary things as well. It is the same for eating, enough if I can eat three times a day, I try not to eat another snacks other than the 3 meals lol :D because I have internet to pay, rent, and some other things that I can't avoid.

Thank kodukodu for your response!;) Honestly, I am also guilty of not saving much at this age. Besides, "ITS NEVER TOO LATE" to do some savings at this point in time. It just requires a lot of discipline and commitment within ourselves. You mentioned about not having another "snacks" other than your three meals, I think its one way to save. I remember my friend saying "Do not go to supermarket shopping hungry for you will end up buying a lot." But a lot of times, I can't really help it! My philosophy is to buy all the things I want especially food, for I do not want to starve myself. I work hard because I want to satisfy all the things I want. I guess we really have to identify things we 'NEED' and "WANT'.

I agree with most of what you said. Sad to say at the moment even if I try to limit buying things and buy only those that are needed still I have not saved any amount but that is my goal. I try to buy supplies mostly in sachets such as toothpaste, coffee, etc. I also do not frequent the malls since the displays are tempting. I enjoy the simple things that I have. To avoid spending on movies I watch movies by borrowing copies from friends or be contented on what is being shown on cable tv. It is more on the right attitude towards saving for the future.

I feel the same way. Every time i have enough money to shop, i usually have the urge to buy things. But now i'm saving money very well. I suggest that you should think that you're money would not last long if you keep spending, This should make you think twice about spending your money. Also, if you really want a new car, you should use that as your motivation to save money. Just think that nothing else is better than getting a new car. Use it as your motivation to save money.

I'm saving, though there is no much to save. Before buying something, I will check whether I really need it or not. If not, I will not buy it as soon as possible. I tell myself if I have spare money, I can go out for a travel. I have a travle plan each year, and I make it this year.

I really wish that I could! If I face any kind of emergency situation then I'm really going to have some serious problems. I don't have any savings in the bank and so I'm kind of hoping that I never have to face a rainy day as it were! That's probably wishful thinking though and not that realistic! I too love to shop and can be an impulse buyer at times. I do have two small cans in which I same some of my copper coins as well as silver and it's just small change and doesn't amount to much. I know that it's probably not the right attitude but I just take each day as it comes and it's my hope that I win big on the Euromillions Lottery, probably wishful thinking but you never know! Andrew:)

When I get my salary I will take $500 and put it in another bank for saving. When I really desperate to use money I will take that money out of the bank..

That is big enough for saving kunizzul!;) How I wish I have that much money to save! I have been paying for my obligations lately and monthly bills just keep on coming, that is why I cannot save that much! Good luck! ;)

Well, I tried to but it's hard as I am in 'rainy days' now. Still, we tried to save some cost at home. If purchasing for food stuck, we'll do it in bulk during sales. I also try to compare prices between one store to another. Since I am a shopaholic, I try to minimize spending with carrying less money to the store and try to stick to the list. I don't have credit card and never will apply one. Also, even though it's hard, I try to put aside some money into the piggy bank. Even $10 or $1 will do.
