When I was young, I wanted to become a teacher. I was being influence by my teacher when I was in my elementary years. However, my mentor in my college days discouraged me to pursue education course and encouraged me to shift to other career besides teaching. She has been teaching for more than 30 years and she said she is happy with her 30 years in service. But I can't really understand why she discouraged me to be one. After high school I followed my mentor's advised and pursue an IT degree however after two years I realized that I was not totally happy with my course and shifted to applied linguistics. After my graduation I was not really thinking about pursuing any teaching career however it seems that all the doors of other opportunities are closed for me. I tried even to migrate just to work however I was not delighted with my work even though the salary was "meaty". I have a friend who work as a professor in one of the university here in the Philippines and ask me if I would like to try teaching. She encouraged me to give it a try and work as a part time instructor. I tried and eventually I found the satisfaction I am looking for. I am happy every time I see my students learn new things beyond the four walls of the classroom and applied it in their daily lives.I am in the profession right now for more than 10 years and counting. In reality you cannot close your eyes to the universal truth about teaching profession especially to the third world countries, the obstacles and challenges that most teacher face everyday is higher than expected considering the fact that the quality of education is somehow affected by the quality of infrastructure and facilities of the school regardless if it is public or private school. One should consider the external and internal factors for quality education. Now I understand why did my mentor discouraged me to be one. Looking back from my experienced when I was still studying and now that I am in the battlefield of teaching I can conclude that teaching is a gift endowed by our creator. Fate brought me here and I am sold out that I was born to become a teacher. No matter what it takes, wherever fate will bring me it is crystal clear I am called to teach and impact the lives of the young ones. This is my purpose! How about you mylotters, Did you choose your career or did it choose you?
