A drink of water for a cat

Took 4 engineers and a lot of higher math to figure out how its done... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/12/science/12cats.html and some very interesting info in the article about how they do it, how they engineers figured it out and even a video of a cat drinking! Have you ever watched your cat drink? I know I have, and I knew they only put the tip of their tongue in the water, but that was as far as I, a non-engineer/non-math type person could tell ya. You ever wonder? Well, here's the info!

This is a very interesting study. My question, of course, is who funded it? I could not have imagined this method, but then again, I am not a cat. I had one cat who continued nursing a bathroom rug for quite a while.

Oh, likely it's the usual: your tax dollars at work.... I had a neurotic kitten (abandoned at one day old!) who liked to nurse on my palm, & another on my ear lobe. (Wow! Does THAT ever tickle or what?! LOL!) Maggiepie "When you're right you're right, & when you're wrong you're left." ~ Anonymous

I am impressed, no government funds were spent on this study.

actually, nobody funded it, they did it for free

Wow! I knew my cat could drink fast but never realized exactly how fast and how involved it was. My female sometimes likes to dip her paw in her water and then she licks the water off her paw. My male sometimes moves his water bowl with his paw a little, looks in and then drinks. I think he is trying to determine exactly how far the water is

I've had several cats that do that moving the water dish to see the level, right now I think I have 5...

I've had cats do that paw thing. I've also known one who would drink with her paw from your tea glass if you sat it on the floor by your chair, plus she liked to play with marbles, & would tuck them under your pillow, or in your shoe, or into your drink! And I think you're correct about finding the surface of the water! Maggiepie "When you're right you're right, & when you're wrong you're left." ~ Anonymous

That is really interesting Elic. I've often wondered it myself but assumed that with their wet tongue is how they got their water, a little at a time. I watched them all the while laughing because they don't like to get one drop on their furry bodies (their majesty.... lol) but yet they like to drink it. lol

I've had cats that don't mind getting wet - Scamp and Taj have been known to stick their silly head under the faucet to drink!

I have one (Daisy, my calico) that likes to drink from the faucet and/or the tub only if she had her way but I can't leave it on so sometimes I'll put some water in the tub for her. The tub won't hold it for long periods of time so it eventually drains out so when she gets more water, it's definitely fresh which is just how she wants it. We have several water bowls around the house and yard which we change twice a day every day so it's pretty fresh but she wants it fresh fresh from the spigot from the tub or sink but she doesn't always get it though.

Elic: Don't forget Briar Rose! Sometimes she'd jump into the tub while you bathed, unless you kept her out of the bathroom! Crazy little cat. I still miss her so much. Maggiepie "Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted." ~ Jules Renard, author (1864-1910)

So...technically, they actually bite the stream of water/milk/spaghetti sauce, whatever. What I wonder is, why do they lose the ability to suck? It seems more efficient, to me. Especially when it takes so long to lap instead of sucking. I mean, feral house cats always have to be on the lookout for danger. I would think that getting more fluid down in a hurry would make them safer. Anyway, I've watched them lapping, so I'm curious as to why the scientists can't make out how they do it without high speed photography. Why not? I mean, it's perfectly obvious to me! Four times a second isn't that fast, really. Pianists can hit a note that swiftly. I love how they cat-agorize the lapping method cats (as opposed to dawgs...) use as "more elegant." But of course! They're cats, after all--always "more elegant" than dogs! Maggiepie "When you're right you're right, & when you're wrong you're left." ~ Anonymous

kind of, did you watch the vid? and they seem to lose the ability about the same time they start eating food - tho we liked to have NEVER gotten Oliver off the bottle! It took tempting him with tuna water!

I watched two vids: one of the guys talking, & one of Cutta (the slowmo). his pet cat. Yeah, I know when they lose it, but my question is why do they lose it? And does Oliver actually retain a kitten's sucking ability? I wonder how he fought the usual weaning thing, unlike other cats? Hm. I'd ask him, but I'm not fluent in Meowese.... I think he didn't want to give up the bottle because it was "mommy time" and no, he can't do it anymore (more's the pity) Now, I did know a cat who kept it, but sucked on fingers, would have all the first 2 joints down his throat to do it - and Gabby sucked on her tail for about a year... the Bish had a cat who nursed on herself well into adulthood... its a trick with the tongue!

Yeah, there is so much to explore in the nature, that we humans will need an eternity to find out how it all works. As we were created to live forever, our Creator made so many interesting things for us so we would never get bored. Looking forward to the future paradise when we have time to admire all the wonders of the earth! I wrote a poem about it: http://www.bukisa.com/articles/373615_to-all-my-friends

Hi, Maggiepie, glad you liked my poem. It is about when the earth will be a paradise and as that was God´s purpose from the beginning, nothing can change it. And, of course He may have lots of plans after that. But we will have to wait and see.. For us human beings it will be plenty of work to do - a lot of gardening building and who knows what more?? Have a great day

Why limit us to earth? Have you noticed how large the universe is? And the latest scientific theories say there could be multiple--perhaps infinite universes! (Universii? ) We'd have infinite time to explore them. God is nothing if not generous! Read your poem. Enjoyed it, too. I often dream (& daydream) of life in Heaven, too. If I can wrestle it to the ground, I hope to write a story called "The Billionth Day In Heaven," when God tells everyone He has a new plan, now... That's fascinating! I'd always assumed that the hairs or bristles on a cats tongue helped the cat to pull the water up into it's mouth. I've seen my cats though using the side of a bowl to help them to get the water up. So I don't think that they use this method all of the time.

OMG that's incredible. The act of drinking may seem like no big deal for anyone who can fully close his mouth to create suction, as people can. But the various species that cannot do so — and that includes most adult carnivores — must resort to some other mechanism.

Cats are really amazing and I never knew about this. This is new knowlegdge for me, and I will never get rid of it. Lapping within cats seems a little time consuming, but since they have constant access to water in wildlife they may be compensated for such a time lapse. Yet, this time lapse may help other animals close in on them easily. Based on cats defensive techniques, they definitely are wiser and tend to avoid being prey. There seems to be more prey for cats to eat, than cats being pray for other animals.

In a cats perspective, this behavior will help them avoid becoming dirty, as their fur doesn't easily get in contact with water or milk this way.

hi elicbxn that is fascinating and I had known about the tip of the tongue. But I had not known that they lap so fast wow.I know its really hard to watch them as they drink so fast. They are a very elegant creature that is as fastidious as any thing. I have always loved watching a cat eat and drink.thanks for the educating us this is really fascinating.

I cannot believe how complex the process of discovery has been for this! It is fascinating, really...I have always thought that felines were so much classier than canines I have wondered how one of my cats manages huge gulps of water from his bowl in a split second! Cats are so extremely fascinating creatures!

What a waste of time! It was interesting, but there are more important things to study. It is good that it didn't cost anything though. I didn't know that cat's can't close their mouths completely. It just seems funny that they needed engineers and lab tests to see how animals drink. We all know they lap their drinks and they are more elegant than dogs at everything!

I was in a bad mood that day and probably replied more negative than I ordinarily would. We might apply it to something, but for the life of me I can't imagine what it would be. I think finding out if the world were flat, is a little bit different from finding out how a cat drinks. All we really have to do is watch them drink!

LOL...Well, at least knowing they are earning those big salaries with such important research must be a comfort to their parents who probably paid their college tuition. I have a cat who likes on occasion to dip her paw daintily into the water and lick it off. I get such a kick out of her!

My cats lapping is a bit fast, as it seems to drink down a half gallon of water in 5 minutes sometimes. I wonder if cats have different levels of enigma, that makes some more fast at lapping water. Its a close call, but cats may find lapping better for their digestion.
