First off, are you sure it's not broken? If its not then ice compress for first 24 hrs, 30 min on 30 min off. After first 24 warm compress alternated with cold. If it is just bruised it will be sore for days, possibly over a week.

I would say do 30 minutes of ice on anf off and this is what i heard when i had an injury on my knee a couple weeks ago. I have my boyfriend call my cousin since he is a physical therapist and find out wht to do and he said put ice on it for 30 minutes let it cool down for 30 minutes then back on again. This is of course something i did when i was in bed as it was easier to rest and be on the laptop to do this instead of walking around. I would think about doing this for your finger as well. Hope it isnt broke and goodluck.

The general advice is to always use a cold pack first. The cold reduces the swelling, and it will also help slow any internal bleeding from the capillaries, if any, thereby reducing the black and blue some. Then the next day, heat, or heated moist compresses will help with any further swelling, and help with the discomfort too. I would make sure it's only a muscle injury and no breakage too. Does she have full range of motion with all her fingers and wrist? If not, she may need to see a Dr. anyways. Aw, I hope she's soon feeling better!

Hahaha, oooops. I thought from a previous post that someone said girl, but looking back now, I see your original post doesn't say if it's a girl, boy, or maybe even you. Sorry about that.

I am a retired Paramedic (B.C.Ambulance Service--EMA1)and long before I retired, we stopped applying COLD for 30 minutes. ON for 10...OFF for 10...any longer can impair the circulation and/or freeze causing tissue damage. Yes, you can continue this treatment, which aids in reducing the swelling until mobility returns. Continue to check for nerve sensation...touch/feel, any loss immediately referred to a physician! Heat is not condoned! Take care..and Cheers!

Itching is the sensation caused by property circulation returning to the area (I should say..CAN BE)also vasodilation and constriction. Veins and venules to the area healing. AND if you use an ointment, you could also be allergic to the ointment. Restrict exercise, immediately after the injury..but yes, do keep flexing and stretching the area, to increase blood flow, which aids in healing. Hope it is feeling better. Please be cautious of using cold for any longer than 10 minutes...you can cause severe tissue damage. Take care..and Cheers!

Hi. asismooner. From my own personal opinion, a cold compress may be able to soothe the finger. It may even bring down the swelling, at least. That is what I would try at first. If it does not get any better then you may need to seek a doctor.

didn't need the doctor, thanks anyway...and eys, i've learned that it is also good to have it carry and roll a small rubber ball from time to time to regain its strength...
