How do you make short url s?

Hi friends. I often notice that instead of looong urls there some short starting with www.bit..... something like that. they are not alike the original url, they are short but take to the original website. Thats pretty neat, it hides the long address. How do you do that?

i think it will depends on how will you insert your name or your username in a site like here in referral and even in Facebook and in youtube website.
