As a grad student, when I taught Java, I would sometimes have a "Go By" column on my class rolls. The first day of class, when I called roll, I would ask my students if there was a name that they would rather go by. It made it easier to remember names and faces, and it sometimes helped break the ice at the start of the semester. When I was on the other side of the podium, as a student, I certainly felt more at ease when the teacher took the time to learn the students' names. It seemed that the class was more personalized, that the instructor catered the content to the students needs. I go by my middle name, and if I'm called by my first name, it sometimes takes a moment to register. I really appreciate it when somebody knows my "go by" name. How about you? Do you have a name you go by, or does it matter how you're addressed?

I never use my real name is social netwoek and any site.I'm proud with name of "redva kaurvaki". redva is still part of my name and my ex boyfriend ( but doesn't mean I'm still remembering him, I just love the combination of our both name ). However, it's nice to use "go by" name to make people easier identify us, but still, I love my name too. Gantwick, you taugh Java?Where do you come from?Which part of Indonesia??I'm a Javanese too.

For some reason only one of my friends gives me a shorter name. To be honest, I dun like it. Luckily it didnt spread. Only she calls me that. All my other friends call me by my proper name. I just got that sort of name I guess. Its short enough to pronounce quickly. All other names relating to it dun sound as nice. And I think I dun have a nickname because i dun ask my friends to address me by that name. Only my family calls me that and I like to keep it that way. Cant expect a lot of change from me, i am such a prude.
