I have done some reading and it said that some children with Autism can learn sign and when you talk and sign at the same time it will help increase their speech comprehension. Anyone else know more in this area or what are your thoughts? Thanks.

My disabled son has got spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is 4 years old and can now talk quite fluenty. He was slow to speak until he went to playgroup with normal children. Until then I used makaton signs with him to communicate. At my son's playgroup for disabled children and those with additional needs there are some autistic children. They benefitted from learning makaton sign language to communicate. Otherwise they could be very frustrated and miserable.

to autistic really can learn gestures and facial expression. children because they can and everything and nothing. I think it depends on us how to integrate these children and how they will be accepted in society. We must not forget that everything is done by joint efforts. need attention and patience. Not that I'm very familiar with these things but we must treat them as to others. Thanks for this nice discussion. Have a nice day!

Hi Kaysue4, I am really interested in Classic Autism, ASD, and Aspergers. Many individuals with autism are visual learners intead of verbal learners. With that said, sign language would definately be a good addition to verbal language; that way the individual can hear and see it at the same time making it easier for them to understand the situation. Best of Luck!
