Did No Mean Never?!

as a child whenever my mom said no I thought I would Never be able to do whatever it was. So by the time I was old enough to do it , I thought I couldn't and never tried to! I have seen that no May just mean Not now. But I still take no to mean Never. I have heard that some guys take no to mean Never. And sadly she/he was only saying not now. How about you? Does no mean Never? Or can it mean not now?

I think No and Never would be the same for instance Person 1- Can I borrow $20.00? Person 2- Never Person 1- Can I borrow $20.00? Person 2- No NO means not at all and never means not in the past or future, pretty much the same thing.

I disagree a person who says never means Never ask again. If they just say no , it means not this time. But one may never know if when you hear no as never. For example. Would you like to go to dinner , never. Or would you like to go to dinner no. The no could mean not tonight . one could ask again and have the response change.

I told my kids....no means no....yes means yes....and maybe means I am taking time to make the final decision and it could go either way! So they knew no meant no!

But did itr mean never. There was a dress I wanted to wear and my mom said no. I was 14. To this day , many years later I Still don't think I can wear that dress , even though I am full grown and it may look good! This is what I mean. No to me means Never, never ask for it ever again in this lifetime.

Once you're an adult, what difference does it make? If my mother had her way... Well, things would be a lot different... and not in a good way for me. I wouldn't have the friends that I have, or my boyfriend, or my cats... I wouldn't have a college education, would never have traveled... Things haven't always worked smoothly, and I've been stuck in some situations that haven't made me especially happy (including my current "stuck" state in Florida, which will be remedied shortly; I've already decided the escape date, and my boyfriend is going to go along with it). However, just because I hit one brick wall doesn't mean that I am simply going to quit trying; sure, I get discouraged about stuff sometimes. However, I eventually brush myself off and try to find another way around things.

You are far more hopeful and determined than I will Ever be. My mom didn't plan out my life she just wanted me to be happy. It was I who thought If I didn't do this or that I was a failure. So much so that I thought all of life was a one big No and it meant Never! I remember her frustration when I didn't want to do Anything! I took it as yet another sign I should disappear . I'm still here because my mom convinced me that she wanted me to live all the other stuff like college wasn't my call not her's. so Here I am. But I still hear no as never. I guess being a pessimist doesn't go away totally.

This is true..when we are used to believed that NO- means Never, then it's hard to changed that, as we grow up. I also use to believed that when elders says NO- it means NEVER. So, when I grow up and someone No- i never tried to asks or do it again. Until such time that I realized that NO- never means NEVER at all, but there are few things that are of exception- just we need to know the reason why it is as NO in the first place. have a good day jaiho®

I think I'm a little bit like this when I was young. There was one particular example that is permanently etched in my brain. When grown ups were talking, I would speak up, and my mom then would say NO. And I took it to mean to NEVER interrupt people when they are talking. Even now that I am a grown up (I hope), I still hesitate interrupting people when they are talking. Not so good in a classroom type, or office type of environment.

You sound like me. I wouldn't speak in class even if I knew the answer. I think I frustrated my teachers a bit.

It's all a mind F@@k, if you know what I mean. I have heard the word no everyday of my life. Did it hinder me? Yes it has. But no still means no. Not now means not now. I think people back then took too many liberties with the word no. If I was told, No, never hit a girl, I took that literal. I still believe in that. But if I was told, No, stop paling with the pots and pans, I kept on going. I don't know what it is, maybe I was defiant as a little kid. I was never one to use my hands, I guess that I understood. But it seems that everything else were just words to me. I goes the old timers did not know how to defuse a situation. So, no meaning no, meant yes to me. Maybe I have some crossed wires. Who cares?

lol...I'm like that too. Unless specified or given an explanation, I think No means never and that's how I've always been. My sister's not like that.

Context! May I have a cookie? No. Does this mean you can't eat cookies for the rest of your LCD? Let's get in the back seat and .., No! When someone suggests you should let them do something to you that you dint want to do, or that you should do something uncomfortable, no means never. So as not to be misunderstood, I say "No way in Hell," or "not in a million years."

lol I remember those days. Mom said no to a puppy when I want hd one so I thought id never be lucky enough in my lifetime to get a puppy. I have 2 now. I used to think I would never be lucky enough to get a gamecube as a kid, now in my house theres a wii and playstation. I thought Id never be lucky enough to have a cool cellphone cause I could never afford it, and I have the most popular phone on the market. Its just crazy how life pans out that way and how different it is when you're younger. A hundred dollars felt like a million dollars. When I was younger and my parents said no I used to tell them not to say no right away and to consider it. I think mostly every time they said no anyways but I always felt better knowing they thought about it first (or so I thought) but I was such a crafty kid. If there was something i REALLY REALLY wanted, id do something silly like make a research project, chart, or speech as to why I should have it and why our life would benefit if I had it haha!

Wow! Are you a lawyer? If not maybe you should be, lol. I guess my problem is that I never thought I would be able to get whatever once I got older. I still hear no as never.

No means what it means at the time. So sometimes it means never (can I run out infront of a car?), and other times it means not now (can I play with my painting set?).

It is the way I'm made, No you can't play with your painting set means I can Never play with the painting set. And by the time my mom would have said it was ok, I didn't play with it.And in fact I would look puzzled as to what has changed? Why Now? So I Still wouldn't play with it.

I think that no really does mean "not now" more than ot means never. I haven't thought of it that way...I might need to rephrase things a little bit when I talk to my girls...lol.

I think it is me. I assume everyone is a stubborn as I . So no Will Never change into a yes. So Why ask? So especially when my mom said no, I thought I could Never be able to do whatever. So that's why my mom was so puzzled when I Finally said it was ok, I said Why? What changed? And I still wouldn't do it.

Hi behen Of course, No never meant for ever. It is for the current or present context. Never always means No for all times. At least this is what I think and this is how I use the two. But yes, there are some situiations when Never too means similar to No. Once when I was having fever, I wanted to eat chicken curry. My mom said Never with a smile. What that meant was Never when you are having high fever. It did not meant never for all times though. ps.: As you are aware, your bhai is from a non english background. So he might be wrong here. I would be happy to stand corrected.

Hi Bhai My Bhai is a brilliant man and his English is correct in this case! Have I told you how proud I am that you can speak such good English. I know only a few words in Hindi and I can't read the script! Anyway you got the definitions correct but I always hear never when I hear no. So If my mom said no to the curry , I would think I could Nev.er have curry again and wouldn't ask for it . She would have to say it was ok to have it the next time she made it.

It depends if i really really want it i will get it whether a big No or Never. You also remind me of parents who tell their children to be good in school which also means to achieve good results.
