Dog doesn't want to take a bath

My dog is already 4 years old, i think. But when he turned 2 yrs. old, he stopped taking a bath. Whenever he hears the water splashing or whenever he sees me filling the pail with with water, he runs away. He won't come near me when I call him. He's really smart. But when it's feeding time, he's there right at my doorstep. Hungry dog.. I tried giving him food, then prepares him a warm bath, he really wouldn't just go because he sees the pail.. Oh, what will I do?

Normally no dog likes a bath. But I somehow manage. I first chain the dog and then go about getting ready collecting her towel, her shampoo and filling the bucket with warm water. After I have made all the arrangements I then take the dog with the chain I keep the chain on and then bathe her. She then meekly surrenders.

I had a dog too when I was a kid and boy he absolutely hated taking baths too. We had to pull him to the bath but actually he was a really strong dog and sometimes run away. He was super clever too and would run away whenever we were ready for baths. It sure was a hard job and he was huge too. But he would get his baths anyway

Yeah yeah I know. They get so scary, like when we try to take their food away they turn the same. Haha anyway that's a nice idea to bath your dog But you do have to wash the soapy water off of them too right?

Yup! The washing-off-the-soapy-water is another story. So, when he runs, I'd run too with the pail of water. When he's got nowhere to run to, no choice, he'd have to face me. The second he passby me, there's the splash. :)

Hi! I once caught him and tied him to the wall. But when I started touching his head, he'd turn into this werewolf thingy. He'd growl really furious, so i'd rather not bathe him. But what i did the last was make a pail of soaped water and splashed in into him. Not a very good bathing process, but there he goes. :)

Hi merenwen! I just experienced that problem a while ago! I wanted to bathe our dog but I wasn't able to. Normally, he follows me around, always beside me, waiting for food. I went outside holding a liquid soap out to the pump where I wanted to bathe him but when he saw me there, he ran away from me. I went after him and no matter how much I called him, he would not go to me! He doesn't have a leash so I don't have anything to restrain him or tie him near the pump so I can bathe him. In the end, I was not able to bathe him. I think having a leash will make it possible for us to bathe our dogs. And it will also be helpful to stop them from getting dirt after their bath while still wet. Our dog did that the last time my brother bathed him. He got dirty just after taking a bath.

Hello! When my dog hates the water, all the more he hates the chain.. Even if it's a metal chain or plain rope, he'd tear it apart just to get loose again. And, whenever he's chained, he sounds like we're going to butcher him. He's really dramatic. But anyway, I'll try that again. Thanks! :)

merenwen315, I believe it is how we prepare them for baths. I would usually go about talking to them and tell them what I am doing to allay their anxieties. The sounds of water splashing or rushing fears are quite common with the strays I bathed but, I think you can always work it out by making them keep you company when you wash the dishes or hand laundry. In this way, they will be able to understand that there's really nothing at all. *Please be in a happy mood when you do these chores especially when they are accompanying you. I would also ensure that I bathe them in lukewarm water even during a warm summer season, they usually enjoys it than the cold water that comes out of the tap. During the bath, it would help if we try to make it enjoyable for them by talking, gentle brushing and massaging them are some of the things that makes them comfortable and happy. Also, don't forget to talk to them in a reassuring manner. If you can help it, try bathing them near feeding times where they will get to eat and be happy after their baths. It worked wonderfully for my pet dog. Once they are comfortable and assured the next few baths will not be a problem, in fact they will be looking forward to it.

My dog, Chokoy (dog before my present dog now) would really be obedient to me. Because even if he's afraid of bathing, when I talk with him before and during bath, he'd just stand still. Before the water pours down his face, he'd shiver, so after talking with him he'd relax then he'd be still the whole bathing. Now, my present dog is really stubborn to the max! There's no talking with him, even food, he's rather go hungry than take a bath. I mean, he's really like a child. But now I remember, whenever it rains, he'd go outside and enjoy it. But of course, the smell's still there. About your idea of making them company while washing the dishes or any chores htat involve water, I like that! :) Thanks!

sweetmary86, I just cannot help to comment here but it is not good to bathe your dog every other day. It is not good for him as you will be doing him a disfavor on his skin and eventually his coat. Bathing a dog too often can be bad for his skin because it strips off the protective oils. The frequency of bathing depends a lot on your dog. Some dogs just get stinky faster. For example, retrievers and other water dogs generally have oily coats (to repel water), so they get a case of doggie odor more quickly than some other breeds. Since you are in the tropics, I believe bathing him once a week or when he smells to be the best advocate. It is important that you brush him as often as possible and groom him when the time calls for it. About brushing, please remember to brush him before you bathe him. Take care. How about you take a cloth and dip it in a bubble bath water and wash him with it

Good thing we have cats, and although they hate water, we still manage to give them a bathe.

Oh, you do have a problem there! You could use a leash to restrain him during bath time but it is better to make him cooperate. If he's a big eater, you could better bribe him to come to the pail and enter the water. Make sure that you don't use water that is too warm and also try not to put shampoo into his eyes. You should place a mat on the pail's bottom, so that he won't slip during bath time. I tried to make my dog enjoy her bath times and I think I succeeded. This very evening, when I asked her to enter the bath tube she just jumped in happily. I didn't expect that but I was glad she did so.

My dog at first won't stop moving when taking a bath. But later on he would stand still and feel the flow of the water on his face. I also make it a point that I have somebody with me when bathing my dog to hold him at the back cause if not for sure he would love to run around the house.

I wash my dog a couple of times in the summer, and may be 1time in the winter. He is a big dog,A Rottweiler, and we live in Canada. In the summer,I just tie him on the deck, and put the hose on him. Then i shampoo and rinse.he does not have any place to run since he is tied up.He is a good boy and after the initial try to run he just stays there. In the winter is an other story. We have to take him to a pet store where they let us use a special bathing room for pets.My suggestion is to prepare everything for his bath when he does not see it,then tie him up close to the bathing place. While you are giving him the bath, talk to him,pet him,and get ready to be as wet as he is!!!! Good luck!

That's really hard for you, I guess. I also have that problem, one of my puppies does not like to take a bath. He's 4 months old. Since we had him, he really cried when we took him a bath. Now, he's bigger we can not give him a bath without help and both my husband and I will be wet whenever he took his bath. That's really difficult for us. The other puppy is almost 3 months but he's very small yet. His mother belongs to the shi tsu family I don't know how to spell it. We don't have difficulty taking him his bath. He's very small.

What we do is while bathing, someone strong will hold the dog still while someone else would do the bathing. It is a team effort for us. It will be difficult and looking back at it. It is fun and engaging. :)
