Collecting and Selling Cans?

United States

My fiance and I have recently decided to start saving our cans, instead of throwing them away. I have heard that people can collect cans and sell them, but I don't know much about it. Where do I sell them at, or who do I sell them to? I don't believe my city has any place that will buy them, so what do I do? Is there a trustworthy website that will buy them, just like some websites buy your old books or electronics?

I am not sure about websites as then they would have to pay the shipping so that would mean that you will then have to get paid way less then they are worth. I can't remember what they run for around her but I do know that our recycling centers around here pay by the pound. If you use lots of them at home that is a good idea as not only get cash but recycling is the best way to go. It has been years when my kids use to do this at home, then I would drive them to the recycling center and back then they were paying like 20 cents a pound. They did this so they could buy the monthly books from the book clubs at school. I am sure they are paying more so I would check online near you and go with the closets yet better rate per pound.

I don't really care how much I will get, something is better than none... and it's better than throwing them away. I've tried searching for places in my city, but I've not found anything. I guess it's another way I can't make money.

Just about anywhere in the US they do have places that do buy them by the pound. I just saw PPE and your interaction above so sounds like you are on the right track.

Good lock with that. You will be cluttering up your property with hundreds of pounds of cans. If you are collecting to make money you will get tired of the clutter. You take them to a recycler. Every town should have one.

Well, I need the money. Plus, we have a little storage shed we could keep them all in. We have no job, so how else can we make money? We've tried everything.

There are depots which buy cans and bottles. You might want to check for that in the Yellow Pages. This is a way for recycling and environmental conservation too. Cities encourage recycling of course. I have no idea at all if there are websites buying the items.

I used to live very close to a recycling center, but the closest one to my new house is about 20 miles away. If you buy cans anyway, sure it's great to save them. I suggest asking friends, family and co-workers to save them as well, then take them all in one or two big trips a year. They pay by the pound usually. The rates are not incredibly high and it takes a lot of aluminum cans to add up to a pound! As others have stated, I am not sure if there is anything online that will do it, but you might get lucky and find a recycling center in your area, or maybe one will open one soon. After all, recycling is becoming more and more in demand each day. Best wishes!

Maybe there are websites for this but I haven't tried it. You know in the Philippines, there are people who really roamed around looking for old newspapers, cans, bottles, etc. and buy them. We don't have hard time to look for them. We will just wait for them to pass by our place.

many places in my country also started recycling program like this. Not only cans but also bottles and plastics. They call this program as 'garbage bank'. i guess they don't pay much money but it's more about keep the environment clean.

Do you mean aluminum cans? Check with junk yards for the best price on those. Many times, there are trucks parked in grocery store lots or places like that, that are buying aluminum cans, but they sell them to the junk yards, so you can make more if you avoid that middle man. Be sure to crush them the best you can so they won't take up any more room than necessary. They buy them by the pound and you can find out what the going price is when you call. It wouldn't be worth it to sell them to a web site because the cost of shipping would eat into any profit.

Aluminum cans have a reasonable value and many organizations and charities collect them to raise funds. Ask your local boy scouts!

i've never ever heard of this in my life. we just recycle our cans here.. i've never heard of anyone buying them, but then again thats not to say it isn't possible. i have heard of people who take cans and make money boxes out of them, and then they sell them on ebay. i've also heard of people who hammer them out, and then make holes in the top 2 corners and make them into wall hangings as well, which are quite quirky and popular.. and you could also sell them!
