The only one I really chat with is my Mother in Law & whenever we chat we use yahoo Messenger. Sometimes though when we are out and about we will just sent each other text messages through our cell phones.

The cellphone is the most convenient one for me if talking with family and friends. But if the talk will take quite a long time, i prefer talking with them through the facilities that the internet provides. It is cheaper and easier that way.

At my place, they either chat with Yahoo messenger, Msn messenger or through facebook. In the past they would have preferred Mirc and ICQ, but those are no loner popular these days.

There are many ways to chat online. There is friendster, there is facebook, yahoo messenger...yahoo i m messenger i believe is what it is called, many many more.
It is good that there is QQ for you. Maybe that is a way to be communicating with people which is only limited to your country?
Online games are also provided with chat rooms. It is fun to be chatting through game chatrooms, definitely, one will be chatting with someone which he has not any idea as to who is the person at the other end.

I am a Chinese and I am glad to meet another Chinese here. You are right. QQ is quite popular in our country. However, I am not so interested in using it since I found it slows down my computer. When I want to contact my friends by QQ or send a file, then I will use it. As it is pretty fast to transfer a file by QQ. Otherwise I like to use MSN. Sometimes it can be very bothering since there are many strangers disturb you when you use QQ.

Do you mean chat as in to talk? Majority of the time, it will be through the phone. I don't like texting for some reason. I guess maybe because I can misinterpret some messages. I might take the message as an insult when in fact it is actually a joke. i am also not that familiar with the abbreviations.

I chat you mean through the internet? I just use facebook chat because all I know have a facebook account and all of them consider facebook as their permanent social medium.
But if you mean like phone calls, I always have this "unlimited call" provided by my service provider and i could talk for hours to people
