hey everyone, pretty much just wanted to express my excitement for getting a bernese mountain dog, i haven't got one yet but am on a waiting list from a reputable breeder. They are such a beautiful animal and if you don't know what one is i encourage you to look them are! This will be my first dog that i have owned, i have had dogs in the past but they have been family dogs, this will be my very own. Has anyone ever owned one? any tips and tricks on the breed or raising a pup in general? be it training or anything i'd be interested to know

They can get 90 to 110 lbs. Males get larger than females. They are a beautiful dog with beautiful markings. I have never owned one but have seen them online and on TV. They say they are dominant with each other in their breed. Good idea to socialize them with other animals while they are a puppy, get them around other dogs & cats, to make sure they will grow up getting along with other animals, do this as often as you can while they are growing. If you keep them away from other pets then you introduce them to another pet later on after they have already established there personality, you may have problems. They are a large dog, and very muscular and strong. So best to get them socialized early. I saw on a dog show once where one was very aggressive when it came to it's bowl of food, don't know for sure how you could prevent that from becoming a problem, but I would say as a puppy put dog food or treats in you hand and let them eat it out of your hand, and then pet their head and praise them 'good boy/girl'. Maybe do this as soon as you get him/her, and also when you put their puppy food in their dish maybe try keeping your hand by the dish and pickup pieces of dry food while their eating and hold it up towards their mouth. Try this from the beginning and get them use to the fact that your hand is okay to be near their food. Be loving, but when a dog is going to grow up to be a big dog like yours is going to be, I would make sure you are not only loving but be firm when you say no, not mean or yelling, but in a strong firm voice say no. Don't raise your voice, just in a normal loudness but strong & firm, when they are doing something they shouldn't. Because puppies will play and chew up things. It's a good idea to get chew bones and dog toys for them to chew on and play with. Look up the breed on PuppyFind.com and it will tell you a lot about the breed. Enjoy your new puppy when you get it. :)
