Why do most of us hate Mathematics ?

I've been asking many people "Do you love Math ?", and most of them says,"It's better to learn anything, rather than Math, cuz it makes my mind blew out, and I asked some Mass Communication students, and they said, "Math is more difficult than our course, who created this ? , It's really irrelevant in our course, sigh **". (haha). For you, why do most us hate or having no interest in Math ? :)

I really hate mathemathics before because it seems I don't understand all about it. But that challenge me to find out...so I decide to take up engineering course which is more on mathemathics... The result was making me enjoy solving problems and if not solve the problem I can't slept and need to review over and over to find out... So I conclude that people hate mathemathics because they feel it's very complicated enough and hard to understand what those signs and symbols all about

I agree that most people really hate math. But this doesn't apply to me. Math is my favorite subject in school since 4 years old. I've always wanted to become an engineer! haha. But in my opinion, most people hate math since it requires them to think. It actually FORCES us to give the CORRECT and EXACT value. Unlike arts or any other subject for that matter, answers of math problems are exact and should be true. In arts, we can explain our answers in different ways or we can give different descriptions of a certain image or theory. However, in math we cannot say that 1+1=3. Of course the teacher will mark this wrong. There will always be a SPECIFIC answer for a given math problem. :) This is maybe the main reason. But other people just find math boring; they do not like to work with numbers. And another reason is, there are also some people who are not really good in math. Since they're not good at it, they find it difficult and they always struggle in understanding it. :)

I do agree with you bjcelyn . :) people are having a hard time understanding especially in numbers :P Be a Engineer, so that we could be an example to the whole world that Math is Fun . haha :)

hmmmm.. I also agree with you sid556. sometimes Math becomes more harder because some teachers/professors ain't really good in teaching it, they don't know how to make fun with Math, actually there are a lot of fun activities that can make your math skills better or improve . :)

I also agree to what you said sid556. The teacher is also one factor. I experienced this in Physics (somehow related to math). She do not elaborate the explanations and she only gives us 2 examples everytime. Sometimes when we ask questions, it will take time before she can answer it or worse she also gets confused along the process. that was horrible. lol.

I really don't know why people hate it. Maybe they just haven't had the right teacher. Math is one of the very most important things one can learn to be successful. You literally use it in almost every job you will do and you need it in everyday life. My dad was a math teacher and he patiently tutored me until I not only grasped it but I ended up loving it. It's like a puzzle to me. I love it and it is great brain exercise. So I don't know why some people hate Math other than they don't understand it. Anyway, you can count me out of "the most of us".

Very true that many people don't know the importance of Mathematics and would end up lacking basic calculations. Although we all have aspects of Maths we love dearly and the ones we hate but having the general knowledge is very helpful in our day to day live because no day goes by without presenting us with basic calculations maybe at home or at the store, you have to be conversant in Maths in other for you not to end up being cheated everyday.

Hi Carlotay, most people either love Maths or hate Maths. From what I can see, those who are good in Arts, as in drawing, usually hate Mathematics. Those who are good in Music, they seem to like Maths better. I think it is more of the way we think. People who love maths are less emotional than those who hate maths. Another factor might be the language. Everyone knows that Chinese students score very well in international maths competition. The reason is in the language used. Chinese seems to be a language that enables people to count faster.

Scheng1, if I understand what you are saying then I guess it means people who are talented or have special interest in other subject are likely bound to hate Maths, if that is what you mean I think i don't with that because such people who love Arts will beat themselves to know why they don't like maths. I might also add that I agree with you that people who love maths are less emotional than the average maths hater.

I love maths, but I think I know hy people don't like it because you learn things you will never use in your real life. For example the theory of pythagoras? did you use it often? I don't think so. I think the people don't see the importance of maths. But it is personally, because I love maths and those stupid things to learn like pythagoras.

Yeah, I really do love Mathematics also, cuz I'm a 1st year Civil Engineering student .. :) hehe, I totally agree of what you've said, because most of the time, many people don't understand the importance of Math in our life . :) they don't realize, because of Mathematics and numbers, our world became habitable, and technology evolved . Just like Buildings, it is made up in numbers from the start. :))

ok so that's a bit advanced but basic math and algebra are things we will use in everyday life. Problem solving skills...you use them all the time. I use math all the time. Reading and Math are two of the most important things you will use in school. Writing also ranks right up there. I used to feel this way about history. That was my sleeping class. Now I wish I had paid more attention.

Iam a 1st year Teacher education student. So I need to focus myself on maths and language. Not the algebra and difficult tasks, but it is maths at elementary school grade. It is still hard for me because it is 7 years ago for myself and I need to learn it again, how the childrens brain is working. It is fun, but really hard to understand.

Acctually I do love math, but I could not understand it. People said "if we love the subject, we'll be able to understand the subject", but why it does not work in math ? is it because I am a girl ? ( some people said that boys are good in math ). I never get a good mark in math, just average. That's why I took foreign language in university, I don't want to meet Math again ( well I'll still have it, but the easy one ). Doing Math was like having a baby :D (maybe).

hello zaahro!! i am hereby to encourage u about the first among the best subject which u have previously terminated, it is not dat only boy knows math, but among my class mate, i and some ladies knows math and u can see now that math is beautiful, firstly, for instant if u try to move a little bit away from that foreign language u are studying and abstain from it for some time, u will discover that u may not be able to perform the way u does before, that also applied to math also, try to move closer to math and put it into practice and allow it to be the nook and cranny of ur hobbies, u will find out dat u turn a new leave, moreover mathematics is a very interesting sub. i could remember when i wanted to sited for my high school exam, when ever i tried to work any solution, i turned it to game, if i loose i'll feel some how marveled and tried to know what as course the mistake i would later discover that it's a slit mistak which coursed it, u know it is somehow sometime a fun.

I can't understand why people hate Math at all. It is one of the loveliest subjects- the Queen of Sciences so to say. I simply love it. The fall out of learning Math is to think straight and logically. Teaching the same logic through any other means would be a lot of effort.

I love math. It promotes logical thinking. Sure it can be hard for some people, however once you really understand how it works, it becomes easy. The more you do something; the easier it gets. Just don't give up and you will be OK!

Because far too many people are being told at home that mathematics is difficult and horrible and the worse subject thaught in school. In Norway I think we're pretty good at it, a German friend of mine said it wasn't as common there and that when she checked with younger members of her family (still living in Germany, she lives in Norway) they said it was rather Latin that had that reputation in Germany.

hello, I hate math. I am having a hard time to solve problems. It is difficult to understand but I cant help it because we needed it. They always include it in our course. though we dont really needed it at all. It is just an addition for our tuition fees. though how many times it explain to me I am still having a hard time to understand it.

hehe, I'm not blaming you my friend for hating Math cuz it's irrelevant to your course. sometimes, and especially most of my friends just like in Mas Communication, they have good grades in their majors, but they Failed there Minor, MATH . HAHAHA . But try to look at Math in the different perspective . :) Understanding Math is not an instant, it takes more practice to perfect it . ;) Happy Mylotting :D

I hate maths too! Even though I'm doing an extension course in school and my maths teacher adores maths! She loves writing really hard exams and by the end of the exam, she would say "It was easy yeah?" And we would all look at her funny. I don't enjoy maths but I would say I'm quite good at it, I know people in my class who excel at it and do really well. That's because they're pretty passionate about maths. Because I do an extension course, I have maths almost everyday! Sometimes I would see my teacher 3 times a day for maths and I was planning on taking another extension course of maths. In that case I would have maths 4 times a day! My teacher was upset when I told her I didn't enjoy maths. I guess maths isn't very fun, most other subjects include a lot of things like being creative and writing. Maths is just remember the formulas and write down numbers. There's no life or creativity in it and I guess that's why people hate maths. Also, it's not straight forward and it's hard to do.

haha, 4 maths a day in your class ? wow , It's like that extension course is a way too fun rather than Engineering . hope I could do that someday, going to college everyday to learn math 4 times a day . :))

well, me too i hate math, it is my most hatest subject at school..i think most of us hate math because of the difficulty and complexity of solving number problems and all that stuff..and all these complexity is not even helpful or relevant to most of us when we have a job. a lot of people suffer from this math subject in school and i am one of them..

hmmmm.. I really do understand you jadoixa, Math is kinda complicated, but when you'll see math in a different perspective, Math is really FUN . it depends about the teacher what he/she gonna use as an APPROACH . there a lot of activities to have FUN using MATH .. :) And practice makes perfect .. :) well you have to face that, cuz it's one of the Major subjects in school .. ^^

Hello! I really like math and I'm not good at it. I've always liked algebra. it's depending on what type it is. I don't know why people hate math but, it's not so bad at all. Everything these days requires math in it including cashing and working at banks etc.

I have once tried to search for the origins of this matter, when we were still doing our thesis paper in the previous semester... I felt obliged to do it as well, having Math as my major. I don't think I have found a proper explanation for your question. Or else, I would be saying the answer right now. So my response to your post would only be based on my observations or my speculations. I have come to the thinking that maybe this despising notions towards Math have begun a long time ago, along with some other old issues, that it has now become a constant belief by most of us... And with this constant belief, it has influenced the students who encounter math, and this influence might have reached their mindset, giving them the further thinking that Math is indeed a difficult subject, and it is something that deserves hatred from those who could encounter it. In all these years of studying the higher Maths, I have come to the realization that it is, indeed, one difficult subject. But then again, isn't any other subject difficult, as well? It so happened that Math just needs a certain amount of patience and of logical thinking that isn't usually required in other fields, and I think that is what certainly makes it difficult but in a different manner. Nevertheless, I think that Math shouldn't be hated and should be loved as well, for how else could we overcome this subject, right? It deserves to receive proper understanding, as well... Math reveals a certain kind of beauty that it could only exhibit, and we need to be more understanding to properly see and appreciate that beauty. :)

I am glad to have enough math knowledge to manage my check book and measurements in cooking, etc., Math is good for as much as it has a practical use for someone. My son wants to be an engineer, so he took a lot of hard math courses when he was in high school, but I could never do that well in the advanced courses.

Do you think it is true that people tend to hate things that they believe they are not good at? We don't like to fail. I wouldn't say that I love math, or really even like it a lot, but I appreciate its purpose in life. I am married to someone who is passionate about math and I've come to enjoy his passion for it. What I liked about math when I was a student was the ability to check it and prove that the answer I received was correct. There was a comfort in that for me.

Honestly, for me, it wasn't that I always hated math, in fact I quite liked it up until I was in the eighth grade. The reason that my opinion of math changed at that point in time was because of the teacher that I had for eighth grade algebra. He was one of those people that thought that girls should not be good in science and math and for that reason he had a tendency to discriminate against all of the girls that were in my class. It really doesn't have anything to do with the subject matter at all that I don't really like math anymore. However, I will also admit that I am pretty good at it.

Different people hate math for different reasons. Some find it boring, some don't enjoy working with numbers, and some are simply not good at it. Personally, I hate math because I am a very creative person, and math leaves no room for creativity. You have to do things a certain way. All of the rules have already been set, so you can't further develop mathematics. I also dislike math because I love to work with words, like in literature and grammar. Math doesn't allow you to express yourself. It has no scope for imagination. There isn't much freedom to explore. In contrast, some people love math. These people tend to be, but are not always, analytical and logical. They amuse themselves by solving problems and they find it easy to follow the steps. However, a person can be creative and love math, and - while I don't personally know anyone like this - I'm sure that there are people with logical minds who don't like math.

I like mathematics much more than learning languages, because on mathematics you do not have exceptions so it is just a way of thinking. But if you aren't good in in it is also hard to think it is nice, i also have this with grammar of some languages i just don't understand it good because of all that exceptions. I also liked on school more the subjects like mathematics, physics and biologic than languages link German and English.

Most people are used to think through instinct instead of logic, so the rational kind of thinking math requires is new and difficult for them. Moreover, math is the kind of subject were mistakes stand out perfectly clear, it's not that it's hard or easy, it's just that's it's either right or wrong, there are no opinions involved.
