Radio antennas

I sent my car for a car wash service today. Well, after paying, I drove my car straight home. Through out the journey back home, I was so pissed off because I had a problem listening to my favourite radio station. The signal was very bad. All that I could hear was the 'scratching' sounds. Then, I realized that my car radio antenna is "missing". :-) So stupid of me, never think of my radio antenna. After I pulled out the antenna only then I can listen to the radio again. I am not a technology man. How does a radio antenna can capture the radio signals/waves?

Most car washes have signs that say not responsible for antennas, so you put it down or hide in the best way you can so that the machinery in the wash won't damaged the antenna!

Is it? I did not know about that. Well previously, I did have any incident like this. So I never expected them to pull down the antenna.
