Man Blindness

Does anyone you know suffer with this complaint? It's when the sufferer (normally male, in my experience) looks straight at something without seeing it. A good example would be opening the fridge and shouting to his long suffering partner 'where's the milk?' whilst it's sat there on the shelf where it always is. My partner has been cursing and swearing and turning the house over this morning because he lost his wallet. It was sat in the middle of the bed, as close to having a neon flashing sign on it shouting 'here I am' as possible. He swears he looked there of course, but unless it sprouted legs and moved itself I really can't imagine how it managed to move during his search. Let's not be sexist. I'm sure there's some women who also can't see what's in front of their faces. Anyone you know?

Ha..ha..ha.. I am suffering with it and wife really shouts every time whenever i do that. Its very common that i never found my things which i keep with my hands like wallet, mobile phone, socks more often etc etc list is so long. I always wonder how come my wife finds the things which i never found even after keeping those myself. And really she has the patience as she still starts searching things every day.

I think you're the first man I've ever heard who ADMITS to suffering from this. My partner denies it, and claims someone moved whatever he lost to whereever I found it after he looked .....

no man will admit it to his wife because then she will stop looking for his things for him. I will usually locate the object then stand there and wait until he comes back to the spot to look again, I point right at the item,(half the time he still can't see it) then I comment that if it was a snake it would have bit him while he was looking for it, and I tell him not to ask me about HIS stuff, if it's mine chances are I know where it is, if it is his, it is also his problem not mine.

GreenMoo you are not alone! lol! but it is not a man thing, believe me i'm gay and my partner is obviously female, and she also suffers from this complaint haha! she will ask me for something because she can't find it, and when i walk into the room i told her it was in, there it is sitting there lol!

Perhaps I'd be better to say it's something that just affects half the world's population! How do you think your partner (or mine!) would cope with finding things if they lived alone?

i dread to think. I think my partner would probably have everything she could possibly need, all gathered together in one room, probably the kitchen so the food could be stored in its place, and all her toiltries and clothing would be there too, so she could find everything haha.. and i also think she'd live mainly on takeaways, as i've to bribe her to cook lol!

Hi... You have the perfect example in me.. Many times, it has happened to me.. It is not mostly about 'things', it is generally about 'people'. I walk in front of my friends at times, but I am so lost somewhere that even after looking at them, I fail to recognize... They think it rude of me... And I have to convince them that I didn't do it deliberately... it has happened plenty of times... Twice with my Boss... I missed him twice.. he asked me too, 'what were you thinkin' about when you looked at me...?' You can imagine now, how horrible I am...

LOL! Sooo true! Yeah, I'm expected to know where everything is in this house. His wallet, his keys, his phone, his clothes that he takes off in the living room and throws over a sofa instead of putting away.. everything. Yet I ask "Where's my purse" or something similar and his response is ALWAYS "How should I know, I don't wear it". Yet 2 seconds later I'm supposed to know where his black pants are! Ugh! His blindness also causes problems when it comes to grocery shopping. There've been times I've called from the store while he's home to ask him to check on our milk, cereal, bread, etc. situations. He'll tell me we're out or close to, so I buy a week's worth of it (for milk that's 3 gallons).. only to come home and find a gallon or 2 shoved in the back of the fridge. Obviously he just opened the fridge, saw the almost empty gallon towards the front, and didn't bother to squat down to see if there was anymore in the back. Drives me bonkers!

Mine takes his clothes off and chucks them in a heap by the bed, then claims he can't find any clothes. Whilst he's looking for them, he chucks the rest on the floor too, making the original ones he'd lost even harder to find and the clean ones dirty.

I suffer from this blindness once in a while. There would be instances when would have visitors, and I see nothing wrong with the house. Only after they've left do I realize how messy everything is! Or sometimes it could get progressive. Like when I would be running back and forth between my bedroom and the garage looking for the car keys, which are on my hand. Sometimes I wish they'd jump up and say 'stop looking because you're already holding me/it!'

There are key fobs that respond to you when you whistle. Would those help?! I must admit that sometimes I can't find things in my handbag, but that's because there is too much rubbish in there rather than because I can't see.

Sometimes when you look for something that has lost, the more short-tempered you are,the more difficult it is for you to find out it.Keeping one's head cool is the best way to do it.

Which is probably why it easier for someone else to find something than yourself sometimes.

My guy does that all the time, sometimes on an hourly basis, but he (as do I!) has a very valid excuse. We're both legally BLIND. Want to see our CNIB Cards? LOL He has glaucoma, and I have a neurological problem that screwed up my vision. LOL I've often wondered how people who can see well enough to drive (we can't!) can make totally stupid "blind" mistakes. When someone makes one in my presence, I always say "I knew it was there, what's your excuse?" The other day some bstard buzzed our apartment just to ask what street number the building was. It was painted right on the front! I told him to go to hell. LOL

That's probably the best excuse you could come up with! I imagine you work out strategies for finding stuff, but do you still find that you forget where you last placed something? I have friends with a blind cat (not the same as a blind person I appreciate!) and you would never realise that cat was blind unless you leave the kitchen chair an inch out of alignment or your bag on the floor where it isn't expecting it to be. I'm pretty short sighted, and sometimes I have to ask one of the kids to come and find my glasses for me if I've put them down somewhere in the bathroom. They have metal frames which don't stand out and helps them blend into the background

Who? Me! I call it hiding in plain sight. Just because you look Does not mean you see! this is why I Have to put things Exactly where they belong. Case in point. I thought I had lost my umbrella I went out an bought another Only to find someone , Not me , put it in the wrong place! So I'm with Hubby on this one.

I can have a tremendous amount of mess around me, but still be able to picture where I last saw something. It's probably just as well we don't live together :)

He would do that to me Only once! Why? Because I would jump down his throat. I would accuse him of calling me a liar! I would walk over to wher exhibt A was and then throw it at his head. Then pack a bag and go! See Why I should never marry!
@GreenMoo (11834)

Oh if he leaves his stuff on the floor that's no problem to me. I just object when he then storms around accusing everyone of moving stuff when it's exactly where he last left it ....

In fact I know several people with this blindness....even my little granddaughter. I have to be very specific where things are and they can be right in front of her and she doesn't see a thing! LOL

People I know have a blind cat. You would never know it was blind unless you leave something where it is no expecting it to be. They have to place everything exactly so.

How about woman blindness? That's me!! I put my grocery list right next to my car keys and still forget it. I set my library book by the door and walk out without them! I have to do things like put the keys in a certain place every time I am done using them or I can't find them. I hang the books in a bag on the doorknob and still I sometimes forget them. It's not gender specific, that blindness. It's a lack of focus, I think. My ex had it too--can you imagine two people like that living together?!

There's only so much stuff that can fit in one brain, and if yours is stuffed full of really important things how can it be expected to cope with the trivialities of shopping lists and keys? What you need is a wife

I have encountered this myself. It is of course forgetfulness. We are all guilty of it at some point. I have lost things, or thought I did when in fact they were right under my nose. The same goes for my girls friend. She does that all the time. It's a sign of aging.

I think it has to do with the fact that men seem to start forgetting things before women do. Or it could also be a convenient forgetfulness as well. LOL.

Hi GreenMoo! It's probably the lack of oxygen from living at such a high altitude that's disorientating him. That, or like me he would expect you to have tidied it up and can't think where you would put it , never thinking you hadn't got round to it and it was still where he had thrown it.

Why, when we work just as long hours as they do, they expect we have all this time to go around tidying behind them. Just like the dishes and the laundry that they certainly use but never wash. Why is it they think all the home making tasks automatically fall to the woman.

GreenMoo lol I think every woman who has been around a man can relate to this!! My pet peeve is in cleaning up. My hubby wipes the counter top but only within a certain area. The rest of the counter is ignored ...like he doesn't see the splattering on the backsplash of the counter..

jillhill ..lol seems this is true of many young guys and older ones too. My daughter used to work at Starbucks and always complained most of the boys never understood why whatever they cleaned needed to be cleaned again...

I hate it when the menfolk in my house decide to clean. The big one rips everything out and makes it a three day mission where it's unsafe to step inside. The small ones make more mess than there was to start with.

Well.. okay I got to admit... Yeah I have that blindness too sometimes. Although it is not everyday, but there were times I really can't find something and I have to ask my mom about it. And then she would nag because it was just right in front of me or under some table where I said I have already checked too.

Well, I'm plagued by gremlins who think it's a hoot to put back whatever they've taken (after I yell at them) in the last place I've looked...

This morning we lost some keys and I eventually found them in a spot in the garden where even I would swear I'd already looked. I think our gremlins go in the form of puppies.
