This is what bothers me about government assistance. This girl is not the only one that is doing this, I'm using her as an example. I think the government needs to re-evaluate their assistance program. I can understand after not having incom or very little income, you want to treat yourself to something you could only dream about before. But the state should have cut her off. She won the million dollar lottery. She took the option of a lump sum which was $700,000 then taxes were taken out which left her with $500,000. So she ended up with half a mill. She could live on $500,000 for 7-10 yrs, depending on where she lives, don't you think?? Then, if she has to go back on it she can. But cut her off for now so others who really need the money can have it.

HeresTheScoop ..I agree with you. Too many take advantage of the system. I have no problem helping those who need help, but shame on those who abuse the system It will be their karma to pay...

Wow just viewed the clip a few mins ago, this will come back to bite her in the @ss. That's the most dishonest thing I've ever seen in my life. She has no moral, ethics, shame nothing. The girl didn't even flinch or hide her face when the reporter approached her. In fact she feels entitled because she only got 1/2 million!!!! 1/2 million. Do you know what 1/2 million could do for somebody if managed properly?? Note the word MANAGED, because people could also blow right through that in no time. That young woman is simply unbelievable, and not in a good way at all.

success1625..It is so sad to think so many are really hurting and someone like this woman continues to take advantage of the system. It's too bad she didn't use the money to help others since she was blessed. But that was not her mentality. Perhaps with all the uproar it will sink in how flawed her thinking was and she will make amends..one can only hope...

I heard about that today and was suitably outraged. My first thought was how financially ignorant she is and what a shame that was. She'll be poor again in just a couple of years at this rate. It's too bad that winners aren't required to take a course that teaches them how to manage money before they are handed their winnings. If she would properly invest that half a million she could be comfortable for the rest of her life provided she found a good fiduciary investment manager and found a part time job. Instead she bought another house and a car and will probably piss away the rest and not have a thing to show for it in 3 years. I can't understand how she thinks. If I was ever desperate enough to accept public assistance I'd get off it as soon as possible. In my family, it's a shameful thing. We've had members on assistance but never for long and they were absolutely mortified. But these days, when generations are on the dole, it is accepted and there is no stigma to it, it's just another lifestyle. I think that Miss Clayton is a victim of the long-encroaching brainwashing of America where the belief that government money is free is spreading. They are not told and don't believe that workers give the government every penny it has and they are taught not to care because anyone who has more than they do are evil, anyway. (Sure, there are exceptions. Many people don't want to be on welfare of any sort and they would get off it if they could. But I don't see too many of those. For those here that are involuntarily in this situation and take exception to my comments, they were not directed toward you.)

I think you're right...she will be poor again in a couple of years. That would be good if lottery winners had to take a money management course. In my family it's a shameful thing to get gov't assistance, also. Actually, my husband and I could get gov't assistance now because we adopted and are raising our granddaughter. But we are doing just fine we don't need it. It's funny because when we were raising our own 2 children we were making less but wouldn't be able to get assistance, but now we are making more income and raising 1 child and can get assistance. That's just wrong. They don't care if the money comes from hard working tax payers, they just want their free money.

Oh heavens aboe if she invested $500,000 she would have a great income for the rest of her life, heavens what is she thinking, gee if I won that much money I would give some of that away and still be able to something constrctive with the rest...what a waste.

Obviously she doesn't know that info. She's already bought a house and car. She must not of got previous home sold because they said she has 2 mortgages.

I have enormous respect for you and your hubby. There have been times when we could have went of gov't assistance but chose to get another job to get our finances back in order from the set back. Here is the link to this young woman's comment: www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmrctv.org%2Fblog%2F1-million-lottery-winner-still-food-stamps&h=yAQHRwleJAQHc5TqVhGFgnLEaaAV2vOrZzws3zFfEk-OulQ

She must not have reported the winnings. I won a court case and my husband and I get food stamps due to being disabled. The winnings would not be released to me until they got their share of it through Jobs and Family Services which happened to be 6666.00. Hubby and I joked that we knew the government is evil and that just proved it by them taking that specific amount out. It is very wrong that she still gets them and she needs to be cut off. It is people like that that give others that truly need the help a bad reputation because then people lump everyone on welfare into a category of cheaters or bums and it is simply not true of everyone on food stamps or getting medical help.

LOL! You're right, it is wrong that she is still getting food stamps. And she knows it's wrong. She knows that she is supposed to report any income she gets, but she didn't do it.

So here's an update for you guys that I'm happy to report that the state has since removed the "Government Assited Milliionaire" from the food card program, seems that all the publicity about this situation has resulted in a swift course of action being taken. There is a GOD

LOL! Ok, now seriously, are you talking about the girl that I started the discussion about? Did the government wise up and take her food card away from her?

Well I am wondering how she is still able to get foodstamps as well. You have to report your lottery winnings and when you win all the money that was used on you from welfare gets taken out of your earnings as well. If she is left with half a million dollars why is welfare allowing her to get food stamps.

I don't think she reported it. I'm surprised they didn't come after her. It seems like she would of had to sign paperwork for the gov't before she received her check. I don't understand it. There was a family that I knew back in high school who had a daughter and granddaughter living with them. The daughter was on welfare and going to college. She graduated from college and was offered a job in which she accepted, but her mom didn't want her to take the job because if she took the it she wouldn't get the free money. The job paid more than welfare, but why work for money when you can get it for free?

Wow...they would throw me out on my head if I tried to apply here and I don't have near that much money. If they are allowing that, it does seem rather odd and perhaps a reevaluation is in order.
