this past Sunday, 3 days ago. She was just 7 months old. Just a wee baby still. My husband and I are making the 5 hour trip for the funeral on Thursday. I cannot imagine being in this gal's shoes, to lose a baby like she has. It's so sad! SMA is Spinal Muscular Atrophy which is a progressive degenerative disease of the muscles. There is no cure for it and it seems that only people affected know about it. 1 in 6000 babies are born with it, but 1 in 40 people carry the gene. Babies with SMA don't live past the age of 2 years old. Please just spread the word. We are hoping that if more people know about it, they will be able to fund the research to find a cure sooner. Just wish it was found before Madison's time was up. She's a little angel now free of this awful disease. RIP Madison. Rest in peace little one.

I'm so sorry to hear about this poor child. I'm going to guess that it wasn't a big surprise that her baby was sick. At least she got to know that she only had a limited time and treasured each moment.

So sorry to hear this, Cats. My prayers for the family. Just think Madison is now an angel in heaven, watching down her loved ones. May the family recovers remembering her short beautiful memories.

Cats, so sorry for the loss to your family. It is a motor neuron disease like ALS isn't it? I believe I have heard about it before. I had no idea that so many carried the genes.

I am so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine the pain you all must be going through. I hope that in the future your niece will have another child that will not take the place of Madison, but maybe heal her heart a little.

HOw very unfortunate! There are so many different diseases that take the life of a child so hopefully this one will come to light and researchers will try harder to find a cure. My sympathies.

I am so sorry. This is terrible. I think it's great that you want to raise awareness. There are so many things that are worth the good fight that people just know very little about.

I am so sorry. That is so horrible a thing for a family to have to go through. I hope they find a cure soon. Thoughts and prayers sent to family.

She's adorable Cats, and I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how your niece is dealing with this. I have known people who lost children; the closest I came was a friend's son was murdered, and it leaves an awful empty space in the heart..:(
