Congratulations you made Apple's winner of the day

Yep, apparently I am a winner! This is a text message that I got on my phone today. All I have to do is go to a website url that is made to look like Apple's own website url, but is clearly not and then type in a code. Then I will be able to claim my prize! Hmm, what will happen to my computer or my phone if I enter the code? It will probably become infected with a virus or something no doubt! No thanks fake Apple scammers, I do not need another trip to the computer repair guys just yet! I am not sure why Apple would be sending me prizes seeing as I have not bought anything from them...ever! My wife has but she is unlikely to be putting my phone number on any forms. How stupid do these scammers think I am? Have you had one of these messages? A quick search online of the text message proves that many others are also "lucky" winners!

More than 20 times I receive such messages from a variety of products. And .... I always ignore these hoax messages.

That is good that you ignore these hoaxes. I do too, but I have not had anywhere near as many as you have had!

You are kinder than me. I do not read such mails, but rather just delete them right away. Over the years I can usually tell a scam mail from the subject line, although in truth the spam catcher gets most of them so I don't have to.

Oh, that is annoying. Isn't there a way to configure the gmail account you use on your phone to route that sort of thing to spam? I used a different gmail account on my phone than on my computer and on the phone account my settings are for more privacy. Check out the settings, as I bet there is a way around this.

Any spam or scam emails get picked up by Gmail on my computer or whatever device I am using, but as my phone does not have a spam folder for SMS, I think it is a legitimate message until I read it. Time wasters!

No, it was an SMS message that I am talking about here. Nothing to do with email. I was just saying that I wish that the SMS service had a spam folder similar to Gmail. My Gmail is the same on my phone as my computer.

dude, what were you thinking??? that was a legit text from apple to inform you that you won something... how can you let go of this opportunity when there are millions and millions of people around the world who join similar contests but end up empty-handed??? why bill? why? why? oh the agony! the agony!!! i got a text from apple as well. they said that i won cash, an ipad, an ipod, accessories, and a one-year supply of red and green apples. all i had to do was to key-in my complete name, home address, information for at least on valid credit card along with the three digit security pin for that credit card and then i'm all set. they will be sending the cheque along with the other prizes to my home address. its been two months since i won but i still haven't received any. not even the apples. i think its due to the weather or something. so as i type this, i'm patiently waiting at my doorstep from this wonderful set of prizes from apple. so my question for you bill is why oh why would you do such a thing and pass up winning something from apple? why bill? why?

dude, are you mocking me? tell me, are you? must have had another case of brain lapse or something. not cool man, not cool! apples are always in season around the world. in fact, the world is apple-shaped. it isn't flat or spherical, it's apple-shaped. before we named numbers for years and before the chinese had animals for years, years were called 'apple years'. yeah, that's right. so i'm guessing they're having difficulties getting a courier company to take on delivering all those apples to me. yeah, that's right... they need to insure the apples and those courier companies don't have the necessary technology to properly pack and store apples in transit.yup, that's it... that's the reason.i'm on the verge of tears waiting for my apples. never mind the cash and gadgets, i want my red and green apples!!! sob!sob!sob! in a related note, can't believe my luck bill. after winning this raffle from apple, i got a nigerian prince writing me asking for my bank details so that he can transfer funds from his family's fortune from their secret swiss bank accounts to my personal account.seems he's trying to secure his share of their family wealth away from an evil step mother and equally devious evil step sisters. the nigerian prince just asked for my bank details and US$500 as a collateral so he is sure that i won't withdraw and run off with the amount he will be transferring to my personal account. i wanted to prove that i'm trustworthy so i went ahead and wired not only US$500 to his paypal account but US$1000 to show that i won't welsh him. once the transfer has been completed he will pay me back my US$1000 collateral plus interest and a 5.37% share of all the total funds he is able to transfer to my account. sounds like a good deal, yes?

No, I would never mock you my friend! So are the apples half red and half green (seriously, there are apples like that) or are they sending you an equal amount of red ones compared to green ones? I only like the red ones myself, even though the green ones are more environmentally friendly. That does sound like a good deal with the Nigerian prince. They are all such nice trustworthy folks over there, so it is good that you went out of your way to prove your trustworthiness with him.

I am sure that they are just waiting for the apples to come into season so that you get the best quality apples possible, then you will receive all the other goodies at once along with them. Saves postage that way! To answer you question, I do not really know what I was thinking. I must have had a brain lapse or something to pass up on this special offer!

Yeah, I've got those messages and emails and I always reply with "God bless you" word. If those guys who sent me the message deserve to be blessed then I'm happy to be the chanel and if ever they are'nt I will be blessed!! ... lots and lots of scammers are finding more ways to lure people into their trap that's why every individual must be vigilant enough to know.

I never give these people the satisfaction of a reply. They do not deserve one. I would rather put the energy into discussing it here than send anything to them. We certainly must be vigilant and assume that all messages we get from people unknown could be spam or scams. We should never respond to their requests in good faith without first checking it out.

Oh those nasty scammers. Certainly a way to retrieve info. I get all kinds of stuff in the junk mail claiming I've won or that people want me to collect my inheritance. I have to say that I have yet to get something on my phone yet. I would be surprised at that.

You are a real winner because you recognize how much of a scam it is. There must be people that fall for these things or they would not persist.

Yeah that is the sad thing. Obviously there is some level of success to their scams or they would not keep them up. One would think that each particular scam would only have a short life span too as word got out, but I guess there are always new people who have not been alerted yet.

AHA...but what you "techno rats" (LOL) don't understand, my dear Bill, is that 5 years ago, as a computer (technology)neophyte I would take the bait in a minute...and leave myself wide open to an attack by all the nasty little viruses, e.g. and have another crash! There's lot's of us newbies out there, and it only takes one or two hits! Dang...I just got bit by the FBI bug, because I was lazy. Even wearing a Garlic necklace...and a bowl on each side of the monitor..doesn't help! Hurrah, it's almost harvest time! A week or so away!

What! They even managed to get through the Garlic safety net? They must have not been vampire scammers then. Yes, sadly as there are more and more people getting online these days that are completely innocent to such things, these people are having a field day scamming them all. Hurray for harvest time. Go the Garlic Lady!

I have never had the text but that might be because I have a basic phone and barely use it. Also I have a real Apple computer and whilst I wouldn't mind a new one I would be pretty sceptical about entering any competition. In my view they are mostly spam gathering. Delete delete delete!

I cannot imagine going back a Windows PC now. When I got my current job they offered me a new computer so I asked for an Apple. They said "-you've got to use it!" Now we do have Apple everything in the office. OK OK it's only me in the office. LOL. But my colleague uses one in his and a couple if the residents have bought them too. Yep, that is what most competitions are about, gathering contact details so that they can try to sell you stuff. This one is a scam rather than potential future spam though as I am sure that the competition never really existed. I never entered one anyway, so how did I win? Apples are becoming the choice computers of so many people I know these days. They say that they will never go back to a PC now that they have their head around the Apple system. I think that our next computers will be Apples. You know how much I love my fruit too!

I have a friend who is a recent Apple convert. He goes down to the local Apple store every week for their photography course and just loves everything about them. I am not a fan of iTunes, I prefer the old Windows media player as it was a lot easier to just drag and drop files. But these days having an ipod, I have no choice but to use it. Yeah I have seen that video before....love it! Good old English humour.

I have received those types of messages a lot. There was one time when i won a car. And the other time was a free credit card. There are so many scammers out there. There are a few that fall for these though. I think because of these scammers, I won't believe these types of messages even if I actually won something. LOL. happy mylotting.

Wow, you actually won a car and a credit card! How awesome is that! It is a bit like the boy who cried wolf isn't it. If we actually enter something and then months later receive a message saying we won, having forgotten about entering, then we are likely to dismiss it as a scam. I know I would probably do that!
