Thank you for your advice about my potatoes

Last month I made a discussion about how to store potatoes. Many of you said to use the refrigerator. Well, I reasoned that the fridge is dark when the door is shut and it is cold. It worked perfectly! I kept a few out at all times to be room temperature. I bought two 15 pound bags of potatoes and we also bought another 10 pounds. I kept them in the fridge and they stayed fresh all month and as I needed them, I took a few out of the fridge and left them on a platter to be used. I made baked potatoes in the microwave and they were always fresh and good. I will continue buying large quantities of potatoes because now I know I can keep them without growing eyes on them.

Isn't it cool when we find ways to keep food fresher longer? It's also nice to know that you actually can buy large quantities of certain items and know that they'll keep fresh until you use them all. I think we keep our potatoes in the fridge as well and they last a long time that way. Potatoes are one of my favorites and it always seems that there's so many different ways to cook them.

Yes, it is great that I can keep large quantities of potatoes in the fridge and they stay fresh until they are gone. It’s also great that I can learn new things or get new ideas from folks on here who might do things a little different than I do them, and their way is better.

Hi PQ,\ I don't believe I responded to that discussion but if I were to, I'd have told you the same. I remember when I was growing up, my mom always kept our potatoes from the garden down in the cellar because it is cool and dark. Since you live in an apartment, the refrigerator is the better option, I'd imagine.

We have a ranch style split level home... but we don't use the basement to store any food... I'm not allowed to go down the stairs, so it would require me to always ask someone to get something for me. I'm not allowed for my increased risk for falls. I have artificial knees and I've been having lots of pain for the last several months. It is near time for one of them to be replaced, but I don't want to even think about it.

I love potatoes!! Glad you found a way to keep them. I just keep them in the bag by the frig. I do love a baked potatoe and I enjoy soup too. So many things you can do with them. Potatoes have all kinds of vitamins and minerals in them. Really are good for us.

Isn't it great that you could find this out. I have heard of putting the potatoes in the fridge but I have never tried it personally. Thank you for letting us know that it worked. Perhaps I will buy more the next time I am shopping.

It works better than keeping them out for sure.

Glad i saw this discussion because i wasn't on mylot when you first asked the question. My husband and i both have stored potatoes in a cabinet in the kitchen and also in the fridge. What i didn't know was that you never get eyes on them when stored in a fridge. I just thought if we had them longer in the fridge they might get them. But in the cabinet they always got them. So now i know to store them only in the fridge and will tell my hubby to do so as well. Now my hubby is a chef for his job so i thought he'd know or maybe he did know and forgot about the fridge storing. Anyway thanks for the discussion.

I never got one eye on them. Some if the spuds I buy already have the eye sprouts removed so they don't grow.

Of course refrigerator is a big help when it come to storing food. I love potatoes too but they were such a high price here in my place. Hubby loves potatoes too. How I really wish I can do same with you... i mean is... I can buy bags of it for lesser price. Enjoy your potatoes and have fun mylotting.

I know tomatoes do, and with potatoes I take out a few to leave out to room temperature before using... They have kept all month and haven't gone bad at all.

Hi PQ, it is good to know that your large quantities of potatoes are all still fine when kept in the refrigerator. Your refrigerator must be very large in order able for you to keep so much potatoes in it. Nowadays, the potatoes price in my area had gone cheaper and i might want to buy more as well. Planning to make some nice recipe using potatoes.

You dont like those eyes on your potatoes? LOL im just joking but who really wants those things growing out of there potatoes anyways LOL. I dont keep them in the fridge but keep them in the pantry in the bag and they do grow stuf fon them but i do wash them before cooking them and baking in the oven. We dont eat to much of them and may only take a month to eat a bag of potatoes. I know soon we will be buying some fot eh holidays and cooking them but when i move into my own place i might put them in the fridge because there will only be two of us and not four.

Nope, I don’t like eyes. I will gently cut them out or buy them with them already cut out, if I can. They keep really well in the fridge. I mostly nuke them and eat them that way.

You know what, PQ? It's funny you put up this discussion today. This morning I was cleaning out the pantry and I discovered 2 sweet potatoes that I must have gotten eons ago . . . there were scary sprouts growing out of them! I guess I'll have to toss them (unless I can use them as Halloween decoration somehow - hee hee). You must have a big fridge . . . I think if I kept all those potatoes in there, there wouldn't be room for anything else!!! Glad you found your potato solution!

I have a side by side fridge and freezer combined. It's roomy enough to keep 30 pounds of potatoes in the two bins on the bottom. yeah, you can probably use those sweet potatoes as a decoration for Halloween.

Long Live Potatoes. I love potatoes very much. I had trouble in preserving them. Now I bought a fridge in my apartment. I can keep potatoes almost as fresh as they were when I bought them. I cook myself. I am single and there's no one to help me in my cooking. So I can't go frequently to shops. Sometimes I prepare dishes and want to keep them for a while. I use my refrigerator for that purpose. Potatoes have always been my favorite. Some people used to call me potato-obsessed. But I really am a big fan of potatoes. I hardly ever prepare any dish that doesn't contain potatoes. But I avoid cooking potatoes immediately after getting them out from fridge. First I keep them soaking in the water for a while. I wait till their temperature is same as the room temperature. Then I start cooking them.

I have done this for years, with an assortment of veggies. With Marco's, Max & Gizmoe's veggies I vut them up, rinse them then wrap them in tea towels put them in tupperware containers in the fridge. They keep up to two weeks with lettuce, celery,c arrots, collard greens, kale, spinach, and so on. Potatoes last for a few months (for me at least( before they just start to turn bad in the fridge, as well as onions. I usually cut off the small spots and use them anyways.

Is it potato harvesting season in your place? In my home there is no electricity. So we are to keep our bags of potato in cold storage building in town areas. But the performance of cold storage building is crap this year. Farmers have sworn not to store palato in any cold storage building. The invented a good mean of preservation of potato that is farmers wont apply no chemicals on potato plant. Rather they would use manure to keep all insectcides, hormones, vitamins away from them. After harvesting they will choose a dry place in a room to store them.

hi dear PQ I remember your discussion about storing potatoes, and i am glad you found a way that works for you. But I imagine you must have a really big fridge to store 15 pound packs of potatoes in there. Ours would not be big enough to do this and store the usual other needed foods like fruit and veg, yogurt, condiments etc etc.
