Subway, the Sandwich Cheaters

I can't really say I have eaten there but have wanted to. There is a story about this Subway eatery here in the USA that is stating the place is cheating people out of their 12" sub by only making it 11" instead. The story is here~ http://dailysavings.allyou.com/2013/01/17/subway-footlong/ Now what do you think, is this just something you would complain about or just say there are bigger things in the world to debate? I personally think sometimes the bread shrinks after it's baked and if they are measuring it before then of course it will be alittle less after it's done. What about you, have you ever had their subs? I used to see alot of their commercials on TV and haven't in awhile, not that I miss them.

I think people ought to find something better to do with their time.

Luckily this never really went anywhere as it was argued you can't guarantee consistency in size through the baking process. It was entertaining to watch it unfold. But you're right. People need to find better things to do. lol

I thought the same thing as you, to be honest I have never measured my bread. Not that I go out often though. I normally only go when it is free for me. But I know some who spend half their paycheques at fas t food, and they would do something like this to get their money's worth.

I've never measured anything like that either and probably wouldn't want to. Fast food is supposed to be more affordable than other food, so they say. I guess it depends on which fast food place you to go, who you buy it for, and how much you buy.

Wow not here, i guess prices in Canada differ that way. I thought it was much cheaper but haven't been to a McD's in a while. Don't they have a dollar menu or something? If you feel dizzy you should check your blood sugar, maybe it is too low or too high. I would try to get that looked at.

They say that, but once you figure it out, you are pay the same for fast food as I would pay for about a weeks worth of meals. I think it's ridiculous the cost, for a meal at McDonalds its about $15. I may treat myself once in awhile, or if I feel dizzy, like a few times at work, I brought small snacks, and just didn;t do the trick.

I guess people who frequent Subway would definitely feel cheated. An inch of bread or sandwich is still profit for companies like Subway. Sometimes we don't really notice it, but a lot of our food portions in fast foods have been cut down. Some reasons are in order to cut down the calories, and the most pressing reason is profit. Your story makes me laugh though, because who in the world would get a ruler and measure a sandwich then complain about it? That person must have a lot of time on their hands to think and do such.

It made me laugh also when I first read it. I was actually wondering the same thing about someone actually having time to measure it. Time on their hands or just wanting to star a huge big deal over nothing.

wow that was interesting to me. yes I eat at subway. they have good sandwiches. it is great when everyone in the house wants something different. the prices are pretty reasonable to. I have never actually came . home and measured my sandwich but after reading that I told my husband that I want to the next time just for a few laughs. no I am not going to go to the store and complain because things cook differently each time you can't make sure it doesn't shrink. there isn't much you can do. I use to work in a subway and never thought about measuring it and I never experienced someone telling me it was the wrong size. that makes me wonder about the 6 in sub....no one measures it out before they cut it for the customer. they just look for the middle cut it in half. s o me are b ok ghee than others some are even and some are not. there is no real way to make it perfect each time.

I have yet to try one. There are a few of them around here or nearby and still never went there. Hey, I wondered the same thing about measuring them, haha. Cool that you used to work at one, haha. What are the odds of that happening. You're right about the perfection, some people just want attention so they cause a big deal about the size of something so trivial.

I use to go with my grandma all the time and I was always able to take some home. let's say I only go now if that is what my husband wants because I really got tired of having subway when inspired there that would have been an interesting story to tell if I was working . there and someone told me it was to small because I dint think I could have refrained from asking them if that is all they have to do with their life that and people think if something is wrong or different it is an open invitation to get something extra for free. I don't know if that is the case with this person b u t really why waste the time for 1 inch???

That might make me tired of eating at subway as well. My grandparents ate at various places and she was a good cook til she just didn't have an interest in cooking much. that was right before she got very ill and I took care of her for so long.

doesnt surprise me a bit.. I bet many stores and places do that everywhere. So wrong.

Yup they are doing it everywhere. It seems you can't even buy a box of cookies or ice cream sometimes where they lessen what is in the package in order to keep their prices down sometimes. I have noticed it in more than one incident. I just don't think it is worth being a top story of the day like some are claiming it is.

we have an italian rest. here in mexico. Say they give you one lb. of spagetti and bread for 3.00. I have bought several times. Its good. But Im sure its not one pound. One pound is alot of spagetti....

Very good point. Who could eat a pound of spaghetti. Its supposed to really be a side dish anyways.

I don't eat at Subway, but I buy a footlong for my daughter occasionally. She eats half of it for the current meal, and saves half for the next. The way many companies are downsizing their products these days, it wouldn't surprise me if their footlongs aren't really a foot long.

Yea, I do that with other types of subs I get from other places. The leftovers aren't always that great, sometimes the bread is soggy, etc. But at least it covers maybe 2 meals.

I agree with you perhaps it's the length before the bread rises and bakes? People are all about things being misrepresented and how they can fatten their wallet over it. So I bet with other items that are supposed to be such and such long people will be measuring hoping they can line their pocket as well. Though you know too they don't have it disclosed like restaurants do with burgers where it's 1/3lb before cooking kind of labeling with the item. And who know's maybe someone else thought of the weight needed to be more detailed to avoid such things and now people are taking out measuring tapes instead of scales.

Shortchanged Subway Sandwich - Subway cheating customers of their foot long sandwich.
I can assure you that Subway isn't the only ones cheating their very customers and I am saying for a fact that along with other chains I had visited in China - the KFC, McDonald's and Pizza Huts as well, where they are all shortchanging customers like you and me. There are a lot of others but I have to blame these international chains for setting these bad examples. It does not matter even if the foot long sandwich is half an inch short but the principle behind. The quality control which value these businesses promised are what its about. BTW, I thought this is actually happening in Perth, Australia. http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/subway-foot-longs-coming-short-191925939--abc-news-deals.html Anyway, I hope that these rip-offs would be reported more often where to a stage it will drive these businesses back on their morality seat.

I do not eat a lot at Subway, but when I do I really like their sandwiches. They are properly filled with everything I order, nicely wrapped and taste good. There are and always will be people who complain for one reason or another. My personal opnion is that this is a big company and wants to keep cstomers comming in through their doors. They will not go so cheap to cut 1 inch of their sandwiches, for sure. Also I'm sure that the stores themselves do not bake the buns, but receive from a bakery. The company has more than sure also quality inspectors that make sure everything goes by the book. I think that people just like to find something to complain about. Not all of them, but those that do cmplain, try to influence others into believing them. It's always much easier to find something bad to complain about than find something good and make a compliment.

I don't eat at Subway as often now as I used to, but that isn't to say that I don't love their food because I do. Now me, I'm not going to be one that complains that my footlong sub is only 11 inches instead of 12 inches, heck it is still far more than I am able to eat in one setting, I will usually eat off of a foot long sub twice. I believe that the bread dough is measured prior to cooking and then while it is baking, it contracts length wise and expands height wise. But still, why complain if it is a little bit short, those lost calories certainly aren't hurting anyone in the obese world that we are living in right now.

I don't really think an inch more or less matters in a sandwich. The products from Subway are healthy and good, so I'm not gonna complain.

I'm not really shocked. No fast food is ever as big or as perfect as it appears to be. The fact that Subway's 12 inchers are smaller by one inch is really nothing to get up in arms about. I think it's a bit silly. But then again, I usually don't get the bigger subs. I get a 6 inch, have it cut in half, and go about my day. I couldn't believe all the fuss when I heard it. I didn't need the report to tell me that. I could easily look at the sandwich and tell it was on about 11 inches. We rarely eat their subs anyway. There are way too many local places that do it better and don't have all the sodium to boot.

This was a crazy and ridiculous lawsuit and of course it never went anywhere because it was crazy and ridiculous and according to science, you could never guarantee each bread baked would be exactly the same size. But it was entertaining at the time. Of that there's no doubt.

I haven't had a sub from there in a long time! Maybe I better get the measuring tape out next time to make sure that I'm not getting ripped off ...haha!! Personally I couldn't be bothered to complain over something like that, I wouldn't want to look like a cheap person or go through any sort of drama.

A lot of products have been shrinking over the years. We have called them foot longs so long that even if they aren't now people will shill call them foot longs. I think its great to know there is a healthy fast food today that you don't have to avoid the place.

its been ages , but yeah I've had their subs. Only a complete spazz would complain about that 1 inch missing off. I wouldn't give it another thought. Really they're doing us a favor. Americans have already gotten "plumped" up enough as it is.

Any way a company can cut back and still charge the same amount (or more), they will. If you're ever in the grocery store and see a product that says something to the effect of "new improved taste," pay attention to the size of the package. Guaranteed that they added more salt and other preservatives/fillers and subsequently took out protein and other food items. You're getting less food, and they try to fool you with new flavors. Some places just cut back and make no bones about it. Speaking of sandwiches, my favorite sandwich place used to be Blimpie. I would get a roast beef with provolone, mayonnaise, banana peppers, oil and vinegar, and red pepper flakes, nice and toasted. They use to put like 8 pieces of roast beef on there. Then one day, the woman said "It's our new policy to only put 2 pieces of beef on a roast beef." Okay. So I had her make an extremely complicated sandwich, with all the fixins, and after she went through a 15-minute run of making it the way I wanted, I told her I changed my mind and walked out. She had to throw the sandwich away at that point, so my friend Joe talked her out of it. So he gave it back to me and I got it for free.

This is quite interesting. I don't think we have that in our country or haven't tried it yet. It is really not good to cheat eventhough it is a sandwhich. If it is less than 12" then it is a form of cheating already. If we can't be trusted in little things how much more of big things.
