My GF said: If you go back to School then I will give You a Job. lol

I was in the bank for two hours today. Then had a glitch and I sat it our as I did not want to go back tomorrow as it was nithng that could be done by phone. As usual I had my kindle with me so played solitaire and chatted to a few people deciding to make the best of it. Then a GF of mine for over forty years came in the bank. She is a realtor and I thought that she had retired. Our husband's were at High School together - it was a Boarding School and they were good friends. We are now both widowed. So as we chatted I asked her to look out for a part time job in managing a Villa or something as I would like to earn a little more money. She looked at me and said if I did this course in the city and got licensed then she would employ me in her office. It turned out that the owner of the company she had worked for, gave it to her as she had worked there for thirty years. I can't go back to school I said. I'd probably need botox or something and lie about my age before they let me in the door. Think about it she said. You can wear jeans and sneakers. I do that already I said. You will meet students, she said. Thirty years ago I taught students, I said. My friend honestly believes that this past middle aged lady can study and learn things and take exams? I've smiled each time I thought of it. If you were considered to be very grown up would you be brave enough to go back to school again?

Dawn. How could I pass examinations when I can hardly remember diddly squat? I think that it could be fun though

From what you said all she expects you to do is the one course. What can be hard about that? Now if was several I would have a problem. One I might be able to handle. I would give it try. Might be fun.

I hope so. I will have to see the course details and see what it entails. If it means math then I won't have a chance although there are calculators these days that may keep me out of trouble

Cynthiann, in this field I think you would do well. I think your maturity would be a great asset. I would love to go back to school, just have nothing in particular I want to study. I feel like it makes me younger.

The things you learn you will put in practice, and then you will remember them because you are using them. Learning new things keeps you mentally sharp.

yes!!! I am old but young at heart and you are also young at heart. I don't even remember your age but does it matter? You aren't beyond learning and obviously your friend feels you are qualified for the job. If it were me, I'd be so excited. You are excited, right? I can feel it for you. ...something to look forward to and make you feel alive!! DO IT!!! I can just tell by how you wrote this that you really want to do this so do!! Oh and by the way ...I've said it before and I'll say it again with maybe different words but you look dam good..still not recalling your age but you don't look old and you sure don't act it. No need for botox..ugh.

well, you mentioned botox and so it is good to know you wouldn't go there...never saw anyone who looked better as a result of it. You look more than amazing for your age and your spirit is so young. I only know you from on here but you really do not seem old at all. Does chronological age really matter? I don't think your friend would offer you the job if she she didn't feel you were more than qualified for it.

I live in a town surrounded by colleges. There are at least ten, less than an hour's drive from my house. I've seen people of all ages going to college. Most of the colleges are large, nationally/internationally known schools. There are students as old as 65-70 going to college. Maybe older. I don't know. Continuing education is really big in this area. Maybe other places too. I suppose the only deterrent would be if you can't remember anything from 1 minute to the next. I mean a really bad memory. Otherwise, it's kind of the norm to keep learning. GO FOR IT CYNTHIANN!!!!

65-70-80.....What's the diff??? You can do it if you want to, I suppose. I thought you were serious about it. I know at the senior center here there are a couple of people older than me that take some kind of classes. And I know one of them is 70 because she's exactly five years and 1 week older than me. The other one's a guy and it's hard to tell how old he is. He dyes his hair. hehe But I think he's over 70. His face is pretty wrinkly and it looks kind of silly with the jet black hair. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

Now you knew I would reply, because I am an example of an older person going to college. Yes right now I am only studying online, but after this summer and this fall guess what? The rest of my classes are ONLY on campus and if I can follow the plan my adviser and I worked out, fall 2014 will be my last semester and then I will have my degree! So yes, go for, I would if someone offered me a job... Of course you'd want to make sure it wouldn't be a job you would find not for you.

Cythiann, I think if you really desire this, you can do it. Is there anyone you can depend on to help you study? That is important, and I'd probably study more if I had someone, but I don't. Then again, unless I don't understand, I am pretty self-motivated, so I get by. In fact in a couple of my classes, (both psychology classes) we only have to do 12 out of 15 writing assignments and I recently got an e-mail from both instructors that anyone who has done 12, doesn't have to do the rest. But I am doing the rest, because I am only getting a B, and when they give the final grade, they will take my highest score, so I might be able to pull an A in both classes..

Well, if I was licensed and sold something under the name of her company then I would get part of the commission. Perhaps I could do it but my memory is so bad but then I don't know unless I give it a try. I have shown apartments before to prospective buyers as part of my last job but was never given a commission. You have done so well and your family must be so very proud of you. I wil find out more about it

No, no one to help me but I would have to live in the city for a month so probabky next autumn as I just know that the judge will give the twins to their mother. She hasn't brought them back BTW but I do get to collect them from school and drive them to her each day as she has given up her rental car. They were both a little awkward with me yesterday but today may be better.

I don't think age has anything to do with one's willingness to learn. It is indeed an exciting prospect to be sitting with youngsters and what if you topped them all. Think again.

I say Go For It these chances do not come along every day. Age has nothing to do with it, as long as you are young at heart (which I am sure you are) and your health is good now what else could possibly stop you from this great opportunity! I believe this came to you for a reason, It may be the best thing that ever happened to you. Oh the best part you get to wear jeans and sneakers, I say go for it girl!

At my age I wouldn't go back to college anyway. If the course was shorter like gettiing a realtors license I might do that...the class doesn't take too long. I think I would find it hard to concentrate on the lessons.....and college for sure I wouldn't do....

I am a little surprised where you are saying that you are unlicensed all this while as you manage the Villa. How can that be? Was your friend mistaken? I think you are educated from experience to be licensed which I believe educators would consider a waiver for you. I am sure you are way ahead of your class, should you attend. On the other hand, it would be rather cool to see you go back to school. BTW, is it really an academic school?
@cynthiann (18602)

11 Apr 13
No, there is no license needed if you manage a Villa. I don't deal with taxes etc and what is due to government. No, she is not mistaken. It is an academic school - a course to be taken at one of the Universities but it is only for about six weeks full time. and no, a waiver would not be granted as I do not know the law and all the technical stuff

i take it they dont have any community college there? i went back to a community college when i was in my late 40's because my late hubby advised me to. i wanted to learn more about computers. then, i dropped out after 2 months. my job gave me a promotion and i had to have more time. plus, i was way ahead on my class and got bored. i think you could do it. there are online programs you can start. maybe she would take that certificate. you are to intelligent to let that go to waste

There are community colleges but this course is only offered in the city at a College. I will check but i don't think it can be done online as the course is just for one month. The thing is that before you are given a licence yu have to attend an interview of the Real Estate Board and get a clean report from the police etc. I guess the rules and laws differ from country to country but if I could find a course online I could find out if it would be accepted out here. Thank you for this great information. I would prefer online and will check it out.
