How to understand this sentence:"The need for change bulldozed a road down the center of my mind?"

It is what is called a "metaphor" - the use of an idea to describe something quite unrelated. In this case, the writer is saying that the need for change swept all other thoughts aside just as a bulldozer cuts a straight road through difficult countryside.
