New Year catch-up

Hello everyone and happy new year! I hope all is going well so far. I have loads to write about but haven’t had a chance to post anything as life is still as hectic as ever. There is one little treat I was going to tell you about though; before Christmas I had my first attempt at making some candied citrus peel. I used the BBC Good Food recipe here: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/candied-citrus-peel but I used a mix of fruit as I happened to have grapefruit and a pomelo to hand as well as oranges and lemons. As suggested I dipped one end of the strips in chocolate and gave some to friends as gifts. Unfortunately (or otherwise) there was too much to fit into the only pretty jars I could find so I had some left over for myself – it was yummy! Will definitely make it again. The only snag is that the recipe tells you to dry the peel in the oven on the lowest setting, but gives no actual temperature. The first time I did this it came out still quite sticky and moist even after I left it longer than stated, making me worry that it wouldn’t keep long enough for me to give as gifts. The lowest temperature on my oven is 50°C (120°F) and I wondered if this was too cool, so I had to Google ‘lowest oven temperature’ and found that in many cases the lowest temperature is 80°C (175°F) so I re-dried them at the higher temperature and the result was better. Anyway if you like your sweet treats slightly sharp and citrusy I recommend this! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2016.

I used to make citrus candied peels, but I have stopped making them because I cannot find organic oranges anymore.

@Fleura I know, but the skin of oranges (and also lemons and other citrus) are treated with thiabendazole to control mold, blight, and other fungal diseases. This substance is slightly toxic.

Hmm, I didn't even think about that! But then the rest of the fruit we eat is not organic either (except home-grown) so I can't worry too much.

Yes the ambiguous instructions were a bit irksome but it worked in the end!

It was really nice so why wait? And it's made from what might otherwise go to waste!
