Very few movies leave you awestruck when it ends. Shutter island is one of those movies. There are some movies that entertain you, some thrill you or perhaps some are musicals or some are hardcore action oriented movies. Shutter island belongs to a unique genre that falls some where between mystery, psychology and drama. A movie that leaves you emotionally drained and mentally tickled at the end. The climax of the movie was a unique one and left me with few unanswered questions which the director, the great Martin Scorsese wants to leave to viewers perception. The beauty of the movie lies in the fact that it never overplays or underplays itself. Backed by some of the greatest actors, the movie has a strong dark thriller feel to it and I must admit that Leanardo, Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo all have done commendable job. However, what makes the movie a masterpiece is the underlying message that movie carries itself, and that makes this a soul stirring experience. The only thing that this movie requires from its audience is patience and it expects the audience to sink into this world of Shutter Island.

This was based on a Denis Lahane novel. I had the opposite reaction. I thought it was ultimately a hokey gimmick. There is no mystery or anything to contemplate, It was elaborate means to snap Leo out of it.
