A Freaky Top Ten Track List – Prince "Purple Rain"

If you ask a hundred people one simple question, "What's your top ten list of all time favorite songs?" you would get a ton of different answers. Music, regardless of the genre its sandwiched into or the era its culled from, is powerful, impacting and is something that can turn a fleeting memory into something that's simply unforgettable. While Prince takes a lot of flack for being quirky and having some of the most bizarre requests when playing live, you have to give him props. "Purple Rain" is on my Top Ten list for so many reasons and none of them have anything to do with the movie. I've seen it a few times and at best its ego masturbation to soothe the saggy heartstrings of a misspent youth but the title track, when played loud and in the original long-play format. Seeing him play it live is something that you won't be able to forget even if you're the unwilling recipient of an ocular lobotomy. If you play the guitar (or any string instrument) this is an amazing piece to play; tricky as hell but simply stunning. Love him or hate him, you have to admit that he put his heart, soul and his passion for purple into this song/ Have you ever seen the movie Purple Rain? Are you a fan of Prince? Do you think he's a talented singer or guitarist (or both)? Even though this is a shorter version of the song, it does capture some of the magic of his live performance of it. The best, however, was a rousing 28 minute version he played in Detroit. He was so amped up by the crowd and the music that he ended up breaking three guitars during the solos. Back in the 1980s, when I was in college, I saw Prince live and that was when his Purple Rain album and song was big and it was neat to see him sing it live.

@db20747 - I know Purple Rain is the song that gets all the kudos but I actually liked “When Doves Cry” better. Probably because I like doves.

I kind of wanted to see him live although I didn't camp out for tickets. If I got a free ticket I would have gone, My grandparents went to see him. Grams said Prince was beautiful. It must have been a great experience because grams doesn't go to too many concerts, even though my aunt bought her the ticket.

I like some Prince songs but never cared for Purple Rain. I saw the movie and thought Morris Day actually outshone him.

Never cared for it? Incredible. Purple Rain is the song that put him over the top! I wasn't that crazy about the movie either.

@cmoneyspinner We all have differing tastes. Some songs that are popular don't always register with everyone.

Yes, I do really think Prince had some great songs. I have a greatest hits or best of Prince CD which has some of his most popular works. My fave Prince song is without a doubt, "When Doves Cry" Prince has had a low profile lately.

@snowy22315 With the benefit of hindsight it seems likely that his low profile was because his health was already failing.

I always enjoyed Prince's music. I have the greatest hits CD or I did, not sure where it is at the moment..As I mentioned When Doves Cry is my favorite, but there are so many great songs it is hard to just pick one. He was a muscial genius.

I've seen the movie. I didn't think it was that great, but I did like it. (I've been to First Avenue where the concert scenes were filmed.) I'm not mad about Prince but I do respect his musical abilities, songwriting skills, and his ability to fuse multiple genres. I do like "1999" and "Kiss."

He worked very hard to get to where he is, He was competing against MJ and he had to give it that last and final shot. It was all or nothing. And, that passion came out in his performance. That is what I admired, his hard climb to the top and reaching the top of the mountain- even winning an Oscar for best score.

It's such an intense song once he busts out the guitar solo. I've always dug Prince, quirks and all.
