Not Enough Room

At the Chicago Flower and Garden show there was a display for those who don't have the room to grow flowers or vegetables. I thought it was an amazing idea. They had vegetables growing in this display but I was told that you could also grow flowers like this. They used a material that neither my husband or I knew. but a plastic PVC pipe that is used for plumbing can also be used. I'm sure there are variations of this apparatus could be figured out, my husband has a few ideas although we have plenty of room to grow and would not need this. I thought it was very cool for apartment dwellers who have a sunny balcony. Or those with small yards.

Someone once told me you can also do this sort of gardening with a gutter with hole cut in it. Same concept. I like this one better, plastic doesn't rust.

I thought so too, may have to try this just because. I do have a huge veggie garden so don't need to but might just want to.

@fishtiger58 Have you tried vertical growing pockets that can be hung from a fence?

@boiboing No I haven't we don't have a fence. We have a 16 foot by 24 foot vegetable garden however. We have a fairly big back yard so we do have plenty of room for the conventional way to grow.

This is a great idea! It would also be good for older people who need a raised flower bed because they can't get on the ground anymore to pull weeds and take care of the flowers.

@fishtiger58 LOL. I am going to have to remember to show this to my mother in law. She is a gardener, but she has a pin in her knees so can't get on the ground.

Kool idea. I have so much junk around the yard, I’ll bet I can create something similar for my kitchen window.

This is a great idea, I am tempted to grow strawberries using this method, they should grow well not in touch with the ground.

@fishtiger58 Our rain gutters are made with copper or zinc, those made with zinc do not rust, I think I have some spare parts in the attic.

I mentioned in another comment about I have seen this idea using rain gutters and they had strawberries growing in them. Yup no more rotten strawberries I would think. Rain gutters are metal and would rust, but using PVC plastic pipe is ideal, and it comes in a ton of sizes.

@LadyDuck then that would work, and spare parts means you spend less money to set this whole thing up.

@fishtiger58 I've seen a garden tower grown in cut up soda bottles
Here is a way to maximize your limited porch or garden space by growing vertically. You'll learn to make drip-irrigating garden towers out of recycled 2-liter soda bottles. This method works well for growing flowers, herbs, and small...

We see a lot of such innovations in my country. Many shopping malls are using such green technologies to grow plants that cover walls all the up to high level. A cheaper alternative is to use PET bottles, and there are many videos on this.

Nice. My hubby uses that kind of pipe to make little houses for birds like when our turkeys were smaller and in need of shelter.
