Thanks to the VCR and video rental stores with a foreign films section, a whole new world was opened up for me. My first exposure to Asian foreign films was with Chinese and Japanese cinema. Next came Indian or Hindi movies. Now Korean movies and television shows on Netflix have gotten my attention.
This is becoming very addictive. The Korean shows really surprised me. They range from super intense to lighthearted dramedy (a drama and comedy blend). You connect with the main character almost instantly. There are several story lines or subplots along with the main plot woven together quite nicely and the background music … (???) … not being familiar with Korean music, the music sounds western, but nevertheless, it is perfectly suited for the scenes.
The movie on the kdramastars list that got me started is "Commitment". The ending got me very upset. Upset? No. Furious!! But from that point on, started looking for more K-Dramas to watch! I was hooked!!

When you think about it, the subtitles serve two purposes. (1) It translates the movie script. (2) You can actually pick up on common words or conversational phrases and expressions and gain a limited understanding or knowledge of a foreign language. You probably won't become fluent. But you never know when you might need to know how to say something in Korean or Hindi or French or whatever the foreign language is you're listening to in the movie.
