Do I Have the Right to Get Angry ?

Since I am the EA of the General Manager , part of my job is accepting documents for her approval and signature . Yesterday , the Marketing officer was looking for her July Events Proposal for approval and asked me about it , since she said it wasn’t on the GM’s office at the affiliate’s . I told her I already put it on the GM’s table at our company for her final approval. As I was getting out of the comfort room after lunch , I told her , not to worry because it was already noted by the mall manager and verified by the Audit head , so the GM will just affix her signature . And she said good . Thus when I returned to the office I went to the GM’s table to get it and show it to her . But it wasn’t where I placed it . Immediately , I asked her if she got it and she said it was taken by my co-auditor and brought it at the other GM’s office upstairs. Yet , she didn’t tell me when we met at the comfort room that they took it. I flared up knowing that and confronted her , because I said why did they took out that document without asking for my permission . I will cut this short , because I would like to ask if I am right in getting angry that they did that? I think also that they owe me an apology for which my co-auditor told me , it was the Marketing officer who told her to take it and give it to her so she herself can have it approved by the GM . So, it was after all with the Marketing Officer already all along , when we talked about it at the comfort room . I am sorry , I just have to vent this out .

Goodness it seems we were all having a venting parade this week. Of course you have the right to get angry - venting is good too

The only person to have the right to touch that document once you'd placed it on her desk was the GM herself.

What i am angry is that they didn't ask my permission to get t. I signed a logbook when it was submitted to me for the GM's signature . Hence if ever it gets lost , i will be the one responsile for it specially that it was already pre-approved and sgned by the mall manager and the audit head . So, when i saw that t was missing i asked her because it was her who is asking for it as to where t is already , about 2 hours before .

yes, you have the right to get angry of what they did. they have to tell you of what they have done or they get the documents for signature without your knowledge,, i'm sure you worried about that

EAs are like airline cabin crew. No matter how rude or stupid the people they deal with, they have to stay polite and keep smiling.

Yes, you are right . But not with employees who is like that . You can confront them because what they did is wrong .

Sounds like a lot of miscommunication and I think you had the right to be angry.

It could be a miscommunication on her part , but protocol calls that for one to get a document without the in-charge permission is a no-no.

@SIMPLYD In which case even her 'miscommunication' is inexcusable.

I feel that if she thought that your are not the authority whose permission was essential to take the papers to GM, then she could have atleast informed you about it. If this incident made you angry then I feel you were right and you should not feel guilty about it. PS - Some people try to be oversmart and that lady falls in that group.

@SIMPLYD - It means the lady was trying to bypass you and did not realize that this could be a serious thing for you. Ask (read threaten) her politely that she should not to bypass you in future, else she may face the music.

@dpk262006 I think she got scared of me when i confronted her in her desk surrounded by the other officemates by their desks. Everyone was so silent while i confronted her and her voice was meek when she answered .

I am the one responsible for any document i received for the GM's signature . And she knows that fully well . This lady always feels that what she wants she gets . Yes, she's at that group of people . But i always make sure she cannot outsmart me.

Well, I understand why you got angry. They should have at least informed you. If they overlooked their disrespectful action then they should at least apologize to you.

@salonga She won't ever apologize as what she keeps doing to others . But if others have remained silent , well i didn't . So , i know she won't do it again . She saw how i got angry .

Miscommunication on their part and you do have a right to be angry. I would have been upset though and not angry. But then, I never have been at such high posts...

@SIMPLYD I completely understood you. I too never prefer to be blamed by anyone just because of no fault of mine. And also, I dont like people making changes to my work without my prior consent or awareness. But over time, I realized, being angry and spilling it out on them does not do much good (If I did). They dont change, but my getting angry and showing it off does tarnish my image. Though if it is only confined between colleagues, it does not matter, but I was a teacher and as such, I had to be more composed.

No matter how good our organization skills are, sometimes, things will be out of our control. You should be angry if that would help you but better move forward since it already happened. I guess one thing that you could to is to have a talk with everyone involved with this incident to avoid it from happening in the future. From my experience, this scenario always happens no matter what job you have. Although these moments may be too much to handle, it helps us develop our maturity in the corporate world.

You would have been accountable and blame or even cost your job if those documents were not in the GM's table. therefore, they should have at least text you that they took the documents and give it to the marketing officer. you made assurance some how base on your post, so you got mad when you realize the documents aren't there. I guess you were right about getting mad. I mean, you can't get mad while smiling, don't you ?

No , not that. Actually she let my co-auditor see if it's in the GM's table indeed as i have told her and had it given to her so she can right away have it signed even if i tell her she will be arriving in the afternoon . And when the GM arrived she signed all documents exclusing her document because she got it and was out on fieldwork . And today she had it signed by her , but the GM gave it to me . I didn't give it to her but to one of her staff .

It sounds to me as if she should have told you if she knew about it. I think you have a right to be upset, but it wont likely do you any good to obsess over it. I think I would just tell her I didn't appreciate her not telling me and let it go. After all you can't avoid working with her.
