This was one big tomato!

I say 'was' because that beauty was cut into three big slices and eaten at dinner yesterday. We have had a decent amount of tomatoes here the last few years, but mostly they were on the small size. This year, for who knows what reasons, the 'maters are a lot bigger. The one in the photo is the biggest we've picked to date, but there are more on the vines that look even bigger. This beauty weighed in a one pound, yes, one pound of pure heaven! We may be lacking in green beans so far but we are making up for it in tomatoes! Photo is mine.

That looks so nice. Just in the past week, our tomatoes are ripening and they are so tasty.

@AbbyGreenhill They do tend to ripen all at once. When we have a big excess, we will make tomato sauce to use and to freeze.

@LeaPea2417 My husband won't make sauce from this type of tomato, too watery - he would only use Roma since they are meatier. We gave some to the new neighbor and will take some to the dentist tomorrow. I could eat a few myself, but the acid would kill me after a period of time.

I think my husband likes them that way but I can't eat cheese and I only use olive in in cooking.

@amadeo I can't have it, he can eat anything. I use EVOO on veggies when I roast them in the oven, but I don't care for it in salad dressing and such.

It's so nice to plant your own food, and have such big tomatoes too. I have only grown some cherry tomatoes last year, hope I will be able to grow some tomatoes next time.

This is a beautiful big tomato. I have planted some varieties, soon the Roma will be ready. This year I have plant that makes the smallest cherry tomatoes I have ever seen, they are not bigger than blueberries, but so sweet and almost without seeds. I have to keep some seeds for next year.

I've never heard of any that small, do you know the name of them? We didn't have luck here growing Romas - they got big but they were 'empty' inside for some reason.

@AbbyGreenhill I have no idea of the name of those tomatoes. I bought a mix of plants at a local farm but I did not know which kind of tomatoes I bought. There are yellow cherry, Roma, some round tomatoes and those very little ones. I will ask the farmer if he knows. For what I know, tomatoes may end up hollow if they weren’t completely pollinated as flowers.

@LadyDuck I think the roma seeds were very old. they had been collected by my husband's mother years ago - she gave them to us around 2005!
