A Tishoo, A Tishoo…whatcha gonna do?

I’ve been writing about the lush monsoon greenery which captivates my senses. But, as in all things there is a downside to it too. Getting caught in the rain and wet feet bring on an attack of the common cold. And then its ---A Tishoo, A Tishoo…whatcha gonna do? I am a ‘natural remedy’ kind of person….and don’t like to reach for the medicine cupboard unless absolutely necessary. I ‘d like to tell you about two cures which were suggested to me years ago and which have stood the test of time. The first one was when I was a student and had gone over to a friend’s house to spend the night. A headache , runny nose and sniffles made me a miserable guest to say the least. After dinner aunty came up with a glass of warm milk mixed with turmeric. The golden yellow concoction worked miracles and there I was the next morning-- the life and soul of the party. Recently I read that our good old ‘haldi and doodh’ has transformed itself to ‘turmeric latte’ in the west and is 2016’s drink of choice. Some years later, I got caught in a cold and wet heavy shower .A friend who was traveling with me advised me to soak my feet in a tub of warm water mixed with a handful of salt. Ah! The warm and comfortable feeling …after all this time I can still recall that first time. I was so relaxed that I fell into a deep sleep. I got up again feeling fine and alls right with the world. These are great therapies. So, where is the glitch? In my case I don’t like making the effort for myself. What do you do when you get a cold? photo:pixabay free image

I've heard of the wonders of turmeric... I'd probably take some if it's in a capsule form or something... I don't like milk, let alone combination of milk and turmeric...

I drink loads of hot liquids and get some rest. A Chinese remedy they claim to be very effective is to soak your feet in hot water into which a handful of crushed garlic is added. I tried it once but couldn't bear the stink.

I heard a commercial on television when my oldest was a baby - a cough syrup made with honey and lemon. When my son got really sick when he was a baby with a very bad cold, I mixed that in his bottle and it was completely gone in a matter of a couple days. He still swears by it.

@responsiveme It was a cough syrup that had those ingredients. I've never really looked for it. I just made my own, a little lemon and honey with warm water and it worked to get rid of his congestion.

@crazyhorseladycx I don't know about the removing of mustache but turmeric is applied as a face pack to the skin , the raw ones which look like ginger. It leaves an yellow tinge though. face masks are of turmeric, rosewater, milk Ritually on a certain day in our spring festival we apply that raw turmeric before bathing. It is also considered auspicious so its applied to the bride and the groom (in their individual homes) before they get bathed and dressed for the wedding ceremony. My own tip is to drink a teaspoon of raw turmric juice early in the morning for the glowing skin. lol , this beauty business requires a lot of energy!

There is a product in the US called Cold-Eze. I first heard of it on TV, a story of it being made and tested on students in College...we bought it and tried it and it worked. The first indication I might be getting a cold, i pop one in my mouth and suck on it until its gone and my cold is gone too...

They say a cold is due to a bacteria or virus, but when I get one, I have Jewish penicillin. It's homemade chicken soup. I also gargle with salted warm water, drink hot tea, take lots of honey, and vitamin C. However, I usually wind up with a bacterial infection and need an antibiotic. I've heard of your recipes and will try them.

These are good ideas but I'm a bit lazy too. How much turmeric do you have to use? And does it taste funny? The taste of some of these cures turns me off.
