We may actually get to harvest corn at the preschool in Berkeley! Do you grow corn?

Because I went to college in Iowa, and loved cycling with friends through the corn fields, corn is one of my favorite things to grow when I garden.
On Friday, when I volunteered at my friend's preschool, I was greeted by some enthusiastic 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds who wanted to show my the ears of corn we have growing on our four corn plants.
They're actually about 10" long and may be ready for harvest in a week or two. I'm as excited as the kids are. Is corn one of your garden staples?

Oh how I love to grow corn because it is just so easy to grow but unfortunately I purposely did not consider planting them in my garden because corns do grow so thick and not appropriate in my well manicured garden. But in my ancestral home, we have a big backyard where we can grow just about anything. By the way, I have just eaten corn, the white variety and it was so delightful.

Wow! You must get some more sun in Berkeley than we do here in Alameda--I have tried growing corn here and I think we just don't enough heat for it--I love fresh corn--so enjoy!

When I had the organic farm here at my place, corn was one of our staples @TheHorse . It always amazed me how tall those plants would get.

@TheHorse We made our own composting soil (cut grass, hay, coffee grounds, egg shells, carrot & celery leaves). We get good rains in the spring and fall and sporadic during the summer.

I have had a garden for about four years now and my boyfriend has tried growing corn all four years but hasn't had any luck with it. This year my garden didn't do good at all. Nothing grew. We believe the seeds we got were bad. We have gotten two zucchinis out of my garden and nothing else has even bloomed and it was planted five months ago.

@TheHorse No, we haven't tried that but I guess this up coming year we will try it. We want be going back to the place we got our seeds from this year though. Nothing grew which isn't normal for our garden.

I have tried to grow corn but, here in England, the climate is just not quite good enough or the summers long enough for it. I have read that they need to be grown in a block (because they are wind pollinated) and I have tried that but either I planted too late or the summer just wasn't warm enough or long enough. Anyway, I never had any success (maybe one or two cobs for all of that ground and work!)

No garden here. My Nana used to grow corn many years ago. I have good friend who grows it, he has a huge vegetable garden. I think it's awesome that your friend's preschool is doing that with the kids. It's so exciting for them to see things grow!

Yes, they've really grown .How are you'll going to eat them eventually...roasted or boiled?
I grew them when I had a garden.
