Visited a Heros Home

Thursday is our free day, we have no exercise class. I decided that we will start visiting some local Connecticut attractions. One of the most famous of our native sons is Nathan Hale. He was hung by the British as a spy in 1776. He was only 21 years old. He was not a very good spy, he was caught on his first mission. He did have a really catchy parting line however, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country". His family home is in Coventry, CT and is open to the public. He never really lived in this house, he was already dead when his family moved in but he would have helped with the building and lived in the original house which was on the property. It is an excellent tour and I highly recommend it for any history lovers. The Coventry Farmers Market takes place in the grounds on Sunday. After the tour we went to Bidwell Tavern for lunch, it was a very enjoyable day.

Despite being British, I often wonder how George III expected that Britain could ever win such a conflict. Maybe his mental illness was present prior to the physicians diagnosing it.

@BelleStarr Germany was also heavily involved in the conflict, but most people only ever refer to England and American forces.

@Asylum Well not Germany, Hessians mostly and they were hired soldiers of the king so I think that is why. Many of them ended up staying here as well. Go figure.

I suspect it was. It would have only taken a little compromise and representation to keep the colonies in line but noooo we will try to beat them into submission. I had an ancestor who found for the British in this conflict. He ended up living in Canada.

@BelleStarr That's a good thing to do. I rarely go to places near at hand unless we have visitors - then I'll take them.

How cool! I remember reading about him in school. Once we have a few things taken care of, I think my brother and I are going to travel to some attractions that are close to home.

Yes I suspect as a teacher he understood that a good parting line might make him more memorable however I wonder who wrote down what he said, I am sure the English didn't!!! lol

Well he is a hero and his quote is memorized by American kids, his father Richard is unknown except in that little Connecticut town so to get people to visit it has to be all about him, at least the name. lol

Sad he had to die for his country at such a young age, but then people have been giving their lives for their countries since time immemorial
