Antidepressants? Yay or Nay? Needing some advice please.

When I was a teenager, I was put on antidepressants. I don't remember the name of it but it was for my depression and to help control my OCD. Long story short, I wasn't on them very long and eventually weaned myself off. Doctors thing that the reasons I get depressed is due to the chemicals in my brain. Which it may be I don't know. I don't know how it's all diagnosed. So far they say so just by talking to me. But for so many years I kept saying "No" to the antidepressants. I wanted to tackle the thoughts that go on in my mind and share the things that has happened in my life thinking that I will get better that way. This morning it just hit me. What if I never have any improvements with my depression and that antidepressants is what I am needing? I'm tired of feeling sad for no reason. Ok today I actually do have a reason cause my boyfriend and I have broken up but getting away from that, I still go through a lot of sadness for no reason whatsoever. So maybe it is my stupid brain. Anyway, can you guys please share your thoughts on antidepressants. Is it worth it? Can it make me worse or could it help? Would you suggest I stay away from it? Just anything you have to say would mean a lot to me. I just want these bad feelings and my negative thoughts to stop!

This one's a hard one to answer, because the majority of us on here are not doctors, and so can't make a true diagnosis (ok, I admit...I'm not a doctor, but I play one on tv!). Anyway, there may be other factors at play in your situation, such as too much of, or lack of, certain nutrients and vitamins in your body. Your diet could play a major role. Your sleep habits. I am generally an "anti-pill" person, but I do know that when all other avenues have been exhausted that sometimes pills and medicine may be the only answer that works. But I would try to exhaust all other options before pursuing medications. Depression is a real issue, and it is not just something people can turn on and off at will. Sometimes people do have chemical imbalances in their brains that cause their moods to be the way they are. And sometimes, the only way to treat these imbalances is through medication. Don't be afraid to keep an open mind and try to do whatever is necessary to help your situation...even if it means taking medication!

I don't think that we can truly answer that for you. It sounds as if you would rather not take the antideppresants but you feel that you really need to now. I think that you are going through a tough time and want the depression to stop and stop NOW. Have you tried listening to calming music? Reiki? Chakra music? It has helped me over the past few days. Everyone IS different and perhaps some things don't work for some people. Have you thought of a diet change? Regardless of your weight, if you intake more raw foods it will be better for you in the long run. I have done a lot of research recently on foods and how they can impact hormonal imbalances. I've been eating a diet of raw pumpkin seeds, coconut chips and almonds. I've also had watermelon, strawberries, grapes and oranges. For supper type meals I try to eat foods without any harmful fats. Leaner meats, not heavily processed foods. These things, comnbined with calmimg music, has helped me to feel better and more balanced.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah you're right. I prefer natural ways to help depression / illnesses and medications are my last resort. Thank you SO much for all of your suggestions! I apologise how late I am getting back to you. Everything you've suggested is still very much appreciated! Thank you.

@skysnap I prefer natural as well. Medications are usually my very last resort but sometimes I feel so damn helpless that I don't know what to do.

I've had excellent success on Prozac, but that is me. The advice I would give you is talk to your doctor. Discuss all of your issues, including your fears about any particular medication. (Prozac has a bad rap where I live because of a mass murder that some lawyer convinced a jury was the result of Prozac instead of the guy who pulled the trigger.) The bad thing is that each medicine works on a select group of reuptake inhibitors (hence the name, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), so a lot of it is trial and error. That means you could feel worse before you feel better. My psychologist said that there is a DNA test that would indicate which chemicals in the brain are deficient/out of balance, but it's an expensive test so they don't do it. Good luck.

Oh boy! So you finally found something, I have no answer to. Once you told me that you like to exhaust every option before going for the medicines, if I remember correctly. Do you feel that you have exhausted all the options? I mean it HAS been years, right? I am assuming that you didn't give proper time limit to find suitable medicines for you back then. Forget my opinion, it doesn't matter. Not that I have any experience with that anyway. I can give friendly help though. So, let's ask you this: Do you want to try with antidepressants Dani? Are you ready for the trial period you might go through? I have read and heard enough to know that those medicines have side effects. You didn't like the feeling of being under those medicines before because you felt weird or was it angry? (Sorry! I can't recall properly.) Are you ready to go through that again? Do you want to? I will support through whatever you decide. Sooooo........if you do decide to go that route and meds have side effects like mood swings. I have to prepare for P*ssed off Dani or maybe zombie Dani? You are scary as it is when you get angry. P*ssed off? Boy I would have to invest into a Kevlar vest or something. Body suit for protection lest the laser beams you shoot through your eyes turn me into ashes. Sorry! Not making fun of you. Just trying to lighten the situation. Too much heavy and sad makes me do stupid things to prevent me from falling down in to the funk. Hey! Did I tell you how proud of you I am regarding the way you are holding strong through a tough situation? Back when we used to talk, I was worried that you may fall apart if things turned bad. But look at you now! You are dealing with it like a champ. Pffftt.... Don't tell me that you aren't strong because you have been having hard time or feeling low. You don't give enough credit to yourself. Anyways you are entitled to feel sad at this moment. You are already working yourself up through it. Please don't try rushing through it. Let it run its course! P. S. And I see that I have been babbling too much these days. Going overboard. Sorry! Will try to control that. You tell me if I said or say something wrong, okay? Don't let it pass because you let it pile up and you erupt like a volcano later. All at once!

@Daljinder I gave whatever I tried back then more than enough time and for some reason it just didn't help out. Since this one is an old post I will just say what you already know that I'm on tablets but they aren't really labelled as Antidepressants. They are some kinda stress...reliever..thing lol I don't know. Thank you for your answer dudette!

I was on antidepressants years back and they helped me alot. Like you I weened off of them.If your doctor suggested them again and you trust him then I would give it a try. Especially if they can start making you feel better.
