The Hibiscus That Won't Die

That's a good thing but unusual for me. I have a way of killing all my indoor plants. Honestly I don't know why. Except I forget to water them...a minor problem...NOT. We are expecting a freeze or frost any day now and my front Bay Window is growing green. The photo is of a hibiscus given to me on my Birthday years ago and it just gets bigger and bigger... We have split it a few times and have shared the plant with neighbors and family and this beautiful thing takes a licking and keeps on ticking like that watch advertisement. So far the hibiscus is the only bloomer in the window, but I noticed my husband is bringing in his herbs too. There are a few more big plants in the yard and I think I'll put them at the end of the driveway with a free sign. My hoya is spreading in other areas of my home but has never bloomed. I've shared it with family and friends too and they all get blooms so maybe it will join the hibiscus in the window to see if I can get it to bloom. Anybody here with a hoya that blooms? I need some tips on how to get mine to bloom It is getting colder and my windows are getting full of green...Winter is not far away.

This is a very loyal hibiscus. I didn't even know what a hoya plant looked like until now, I just checked on the net. Very nice.

The hoya has a lovely bloom if you can get it to bloom, its has a sweet aroma and the only bad part is the blooms drips sticky stuff when I 'm lucky enough to get a bloom I put a paper on the floor under the bloom. And I agree, the Hibiscus is loyal to me!

My hoya has bloomed a few times. I am always pleasantly surprised when I see the blooms. The plant belonged to a dear friend of mine who passed away about 10 years ago. This is one of my favorite plants. I remember the joy this plant brought my dear friend. I was one of her favorites too.

@PainsOnSlate I have to find that sweet spot for mine too. When my husband puts in the new window in the kitchen there will be enough room for my plants. I believe that will be the best place for the hoya.

My hoya came from a good friend who moved from Canada to England. It is a favorite but in this house (for 10 years) it hasn't bloomed. In my other house it bloomed every year. I need to find a better area and see if it will bloom in the spring.

@ElusiveButterfly Let me know if you get blooms. My kitchen and dinning room are facing west, I don't have room in the kitchen but the Dining room has lots of place, I'm going to move it there...

I don't have any hoya at all here, and I have to tell you that I'm very impressed with your healthy hibiscus-I've always wanted one, but I have a fear that I'd kill it. What direction does your bay window face?

I get the morning sun, there is a big oak tree right outside the window but the leaves will be gone for the winter so lots of light.

I always have something in the house, don't know why because I often forget to water them but i do like them. My mother always believed plants clean the air and are healthy. I just looked it up...and she was right...who knew?

If I had a big window like that it would be loaded with plants - I have a beautiful hanging plant that is going to die as soon as we have a frost, but I don't have many sunny windows, so it will just have to die.

That window is full every winter but they all go outside for the summer. If I didn't have the window I probably would not have the plants.

@rebelann I do admit that, I like living in the north. The only time I like the south is during our winter.

Yah, rub it in - you are so far south you don't have an idea of what its like to be covered in snow in October. My sister had that happen this year...thankfully it didn't visit us.

our hibiscus (gumamela) is yellow, too, with a red center and flowers faithfully, but our climate is tropical so it's outside. i hope yours keep growing even while indoors until it's time to it out again.

'tis gorgeous! i'd love to gimme a cuttin' 'f both 'f those, hon. the hubs killed my yellow hibiscus when he went 'nto denial last autumn 'n thought puttin' all my 'tender' plants'n the garage. t'was a brilliant plan 'til the sun didn't show fer a few days'n the temps plummeted. lost quite a few from that... he's buildin' me a greenhouse this year, the main part 'tis done anyhow. i've doubts he'll get such a feat completed 'fore frost arrives. ya know, coz he's prone to procrastinatin'? i've already forewarned him that if'n my plants die from such, i'll be gettin' all new next year. which he don't mind that thought, nor the spendy prospect 'f such. i can't get 'em 'nto the house myself, some're quite huge. 'n then there's all the neighbors i need to figure what to do with... some folks from 'cross the great waters 're comin' here'n december (yippee! can't wait!) so's gettin' the son out here to haul 'em indoors's out - gonna need my guests not feelin' like they're'n a flower shop, lol. don't reckon i've e'er grown a hoya? ya might do a search 'nline to see what makes 'em happy :) big hugs!

i have that same problem, or have for the past several years anyway, forgetting to water my indoor plants. Partly that's due to me working two jobs and partly because I was watering my mom's plants at her apart weekly but then forgetting to do mine when I came home. Now, I'm watering mine and hers that I've inherited, although she's still alive but in a place that doesn't need more plants. Mine are finally doing better again. I don't have hoya's, so don't know much about them.

@PainsOnSlate If you use a calendar or lists, then you just need to add that task to either one until you get into the habit of doing it on a regular basis. For whatever reason, I'm now doing it consistently when before I never remembered. I can't imagine that it's because I'm not watering the plants at my mom's place. My time isn't any different at least not yet.

I have no excuse, I work at home, I see them every day and should not forget to water them...I'll have to pick a day and water them every week on that day...but I probably wouldn't remember the day either...

My hoyas bloom with pretty lavender flowers, then the deer eat them. They just bloom. There is no way I can get my hibiscuses to live and bloom after I buy them for parties. We do have hibiscuses in our yard that do well no matter what. Perhaps I should just leave my potted ones alone.

The Hibiscus looks healthy and has quite a few flowers on it. Here we plant it in the ground and they grow into huge bushes. What is Hoya?

The hoya is a beautiful plant you can see the link to it above. This plant goes into the ground during the summer but we have to dig it up for the winter. It would die with our snow.

@jennyjoy Not all of them but this one likes to grow in the ground. Next year it will have to be split and I'll give half of it away.

@PainsOnSlate It is thriving indoors. You actually pot your plants for the winter and then put them into the ground every summer?

The hibiscus is a very tough plant. It is like it could live forever. We have no Hoya but I saw this plant in full bloom at my classmates house when I was in elementary school and that was so long ago. I even picked some flowers and gave them to my mother.

They are beautiful blooms but they tend to be sticky and often drop syrup of some sort on my floor.. the hoya, that is. Of course I've lived in this house over 10 years now and it has never bloomed in this house.. I love the blooms on the hibiscus too...
